Part I. A New Adventure Emerges!
The Crew Leaves the Emerald World
The day of the great farewell came on one of the brightest and most beautiful days that anyone in the Emerald world could remember. King Zach assembled all his court in their finest robes down at the lower harbor, where the famous Sao Rafael was waiting to depart for the mysterious portal between worlds. Hugs were given all around, as Pirate Sam, Pirate Hannah, and her fiancee Arthur, formerly known only as the Knight of the Woods, all crossed the gangway onto the worthy vessel. The Sao Rafael had been a gift to Pirate Hannah from its Portugese ghost-captain so she could bring healing to many and grace to all. Now she was going to be sailing back from the Emerald World and her brother, King Zach, to her own world with her future husband and her beloved younger brother Sam. Their crew, Padraig, Gawain, Henry, Daphne, and Wesley were on board and ready to shove off.
Well, I guess this will be the last time I see you all for a while,
Zach’s voice trailed off. I have grown to trust your advice and judgement, Sir Knight, and of course I will miss you two terribly….
Here he gestured towards Hannah and Sam.
Zach, I’m confident that the Great King still has work to do through all of us and we will see each other again,
Sam flatly stated. Hannah and the Knight, Arthur, both nodded. They all embraced again for the last time and turned and crossed the gangway. Sam looked back at King Zach and echoed his previous thoughts, Zach, we will await the pleasure of the Great King.
They then embarked and began the job of gauging the wind just right so they could set sail at the pier without damaging the ship. This is always a tricky job and requires a lot of focus, so no one spoke. Finally, they set the mainsail and the mizzensail and were able to twist the ship away from the pier. They all waved farewell to those left on shore and then resumed their focus on setting sail. Soon, all the square-sails were set and they were off moving in the direction of the rainbow, which marked the location of the portal. Within hours, they were passing through the portal and out to the other side. As before, they were sad to leave the Emerald World, in part because once they crossed into their world (the world we all know), the colors were less bright and the air seemed less invigorating. The Emerald World truly was a special place.
Note the change in the air upon entering this world,
commented Arthur. When we reach my home, we will see that the air and the brightness will be similar to the Emerald World.
They all looked at each other in surprise. What kind of world does this Knight, whose name they only recently learned, live in?
The Big Wedding
The Long Voyage to Skye
The Sao Rafael sailed many days and eventually passed China on the starboard side. They sailed past Ceylon (Hannah had a premonition so they didn’t stop in Ceylon like they had on their way to the Emerald World) and continued on to India, where they stopped for provisions in Goa, a former Portugese colony. The port they moored in was named after the great Portugese sailor, Vasco De Gama, whose fleet the Sao Rafael had been a part of (of course, this is a long story and is best read in Pirate Hannah, Queen of the Seas). The locals there were very surprised and happy to see an old Portugese trading ship tie up in their harbor, and as such, the crew of the Sao Rafael was celebrated and feasted continuously, making the three days there very enjoyable. If not for the excitement that they knew lay ahead of them with the big wedding, they might have been persuaded to stay a few days longer in India enjoying the local hospitality and great beaches.
From Goa, they sailed straight across the Arabian Sea to the Horn of Africa. This was a very perilous journey, it turns out, due to some elusive sea monsters that kept attacking at night. They all were surprised at these incidents because sea monsters had become rare in the last few years. Though the ship always outran the monsters, the crew was very happy to finally get within close proximity to land again. They stopped in Zanzibar for replenishment of their stores and then continued around the Cape of Good Hope. The voyage back up the western coast of Africa went easily enough and a few weeks later, the Sao Rafael was sailing past Northern Ireland and nearing their destination in the Isle of Skye.
The Voyage Inland
Upon reaching Skye, Arthur (we will begin to call him by his given name instead of the name we knew him by in the Emerald World) set to action. He hired porters to carry provisions and boxes of luxury items given to them as gifts by King Zach when they left. He bought some horses and mules for a journey into the island. Once all was arranged, Arthur, Hannah, Sam, and the rest of the crew set off into the interior of Skye. It soon became apparent to Hannah and Sam that they were passing familiar waypoints in Skye. Arthur wouldn’t answer when asked where exactly they were going, but would just wink and say, I can’t tell you, for truly it would ruin the surprise.
However, Sam and Hannah recognized the route to Scáthach’s Castle and were excited to see that area again.
Perhaps the Shepherd will be there too!
Hannah whispered to Sam after it became clear where they were headed. They both longed to see their mysterious friend, who controlled the few remaining apples of Avalon and seemed to be known by everyone. In their earlier adventures, they had freed him from a spell cast by the evil Morgaine, and he had presented them with an apple of Avalon, the power of which protected them on the rest of their journey from Morgaine’s attacks.
After a three day journey, the group saw a standing stone, which was familiar to Pirates Hannah and Sam, as the marker announcing the location of Scáthach’s castle. The castle’s official name was Dun Scaith, the Fortress of Shadows. Built and occupied by the legendary warrior queen Scáthach in years past, the castle was the location where she had received and trained the sons of kings from all over the region. The shadow from this standing stone at a certain time in the morning pointed the travelers the exact way to the castle, and after a short distance of hacking through dense brush, they arrived on a broad plain overlooking the sea. At the edge of this grassy plain was
