    Prologue

It was a quiet evening in Southwark. The atmosphere was calm as the sun began setting behind the rows and columns of flats that made up the bulk of the borough. Just managing to peak out above the flats were the distant towering skyscrapers of London's city centre, while to the east the shimmer of the massive shield of Bridgewater could be spotted through the clear orange sky.

Southwark had grown to be one of the most populous boroughs of London, with its own skyline lined with enormous towers built purely for housing. Within the cluster of towers lay a grid of infrastructure consisting of skyways, roads, walkways and above ground Q-Lev connections to Sanctuary. On this particular evening the skyways were rather empty as most of the residents had already arrived home from work. In contrast the roads and walkways were full of commotion as hundreds of children and young adults flooded the streets to enjoy the evening.

Small crowds of children chased one another about in small, fenced-in play areas within Southwark Park, watched keenly by their parents, who sat at nearby tables chatting with one another. Closer to the sides of the streets teenagers stood in small groups, gossiping, checking their prisms or migrating between street corners. The rest of the park and the surrounding area were loosely filled with diligent students catching up on their studies while enjoying some fresh air, a few pickup games of omniball, and several scattered loungers soaking up what was left of the day in relative peace.

His flat featured the simple, minimalist architecture that the NCE favoured throughout the galaxy; it was a four room suite with one large living room featuring a large window that looked out over the park and a small kitchen area tucked away in the corner closest to the entrance hall. The entrance hall itself branched off into a master bedroom and bathroom on the left-hand side, and a smaller bedroom on the right-hand side. The floor was covered in an ice white nano-fabric carpet which matched the plain white walls. The kitchen area and the flat’s touch-sliding doors were oak-coloured, accenting the room with the styles of the past while remaining up to date with the current housing technology. In the middle of the living room stood a thin oak-coloured dining table with three matching chairs pushed neatly beneath it. To the right of the table sat a white sofa which looked upon the monitor embedded into the wall it was facing. The kitchen area itself consisted of a small rectangular nanosteel island and a similar countertop that was accented with real oak, which ran parallel to the island along each of the adjacent walls.

After setting the oven to a lower heat to keep the golden brown chicken warm for the arrival of his
