    I

In seventh grade I found a bluejay

    dead on the sidewalk.

    Above, between two branches,

    a nest, and I guessed

that little guy had failed at flying.

I put a Doritos bag over its body

and stomped on it just to see,

    to end its misery.

    II

There are men in white coats

    holding my mother’s hand, apologizing

while she shudders like a dead fish.

Three of them hold out tissues, white flags.

    They surrender.

    III

May we be strong and pure

    and thereby more fit vessels

    for His holy light.  Amen.

    IV

    Look at the coffin-kissers,

    tie-straighteners, jokers, criers,

    little kids, men in wheelchairs

    with limbs gnawed by diabetes

all dressed in ties, buttons, veils,

    rented suits, wrinkled dresses.

    What a dark carnival!

    V

Everyone is hugging, sharing their sadness,

while I’m trying to bury some hot thing

    crawling up my throat.

My sister claws and soaks my shoulders.

My eyes fixate on doors, EXIT
