    Awakening Mama Sarah

    Chapter 1

Elijah Ben-Jared woke up excited that 5th day of May, because it was his 40th birthday. He hadn't done much to celebrate birthdays in recent years, but his son Russel was flying in from Naples, where he moved for work, with Elijah's new grandson, Noah.

Elijah was grateful that he was able to take a sabbatical this semester from his professorship. He taught philosophy at the local university, both secular and religious philosophy courses. He was overdue for a sabbatical.

If Elijah was excited about meeting his grandson for the first time, he was excited in a different way, with a bit of trepidation, because his uncle Abraham was going to initiate him into the first path of Qabalah at 11:59 that evening. He followed a modern form of the ancient Qabalah, one which accepted Yeshua and incorporated some later mystical traditions.

Elijah got dressed, putting on his tallit katan, then his vest. He then said the blessing and put on his tallit gadol, prayer shawl. He liked a nice full-length tallit gadol. He was glad that he lived in Minnesota, and it wasn't too warm. When he lived in California, summers were brutal. He still insisted on wearing his prayer shawl.

Most people in his small Messianic Jewish community secretly, some openly, criticized Elijah for wearing his prayer shawl at all times. Traditionally the tallitot, plural of tallit, are only worn during morning prayers or on holy days, and in synagogue. However, he felt called by God to always wear the sacred garment.

In the time of Yeshua, and before, the prayer shawl was often always worn or carried. In fact, it was a regular garment which became sacred, and it was worn in many ways. It was sacred because on it were the fringes, tzitzit, which they were commanded to wear in Deuteronomy. They were also commanded to dye the corner fringes blue. Most Jews stopped dying the corners blue because they forgot how to make the dye which was became traditional to use for that purpose, even though that dye has since been rediscovered.

Elijah was an individual in that way as well. He dyed one string of his corner tzitzit blue, as was the original tradition. Most people in his community didn't dye their tzitzit. He also ate pork and cheeseburgers, though he did avoid shellfish and most other non-kosher foods.

Elijah said the rest of his morning prayers, including blessing all the food which he would eat in public that day. He believed that Yeshua HaMoshiach (the Hebrew name for Jesus Christ) taught to pray privately, never making a show of it in public.

It was 9 a.m., and his son's flight wasn't due in until noon, so he had time to stop at Gracie's diner for breakfast. He could get a cab to the airport from there.

His favorite waitress, Sarah, greeted him with a bright smile, and seated him in her section. Without even asking, she already had his cup of hot Earl Grey tea ready for him, with local honey to sweeten it. Gracie's had long been getting their produce and honey from local farms.

Sarah was more than a favorite waitress, she was more like a member of his family. She helped him and his kids return to sanity after his wife, Esther, had died.

Sarah asked how his day was going, and Elijah told her all about meeting his grandson. Sarah replied, oh yeah, today's the big four oh, you were telling me your son was gonna bring your grandson in from, where is it? Sicily? Naples, Elijah corrected her. Yeah, knew ‘twas somewhere round there. Just a sec hon, Pedro's yellin’ that your order's ready.

Elijah picked up the local newspaper from a nearby empty table, and read the editorials and letters to the editor while he waited for his food. Most of the submissions that day were, once again, either for or against the newly proposed trans-continental oil pipeline. All the farmers were against it, while the supporters of big business were in favor of it. Old arguments, just a different day.

He was just turning to the weekly religion articles when Denise brought his food to him. Sarah's busy hon, so she asked me to bring this to ya. She'll be right with you.

Elijah enjoyed his eggs over easy, biscuits and gravy and grits. Pedro was an excellent cook, worthy of working in a 4-star restaurant, but Gracie was his adopted mother, and he stayed loyal to her.

Just as he was finishing his last bite, Sarah walked up with her hands behind her back, and smiling. Everyone in the diner shouted, happy birthday, as Sarah brought out a heart shaped flan, which she had Pedro make for Elijah. Flan was his favorite dessert.

As she placed it on the table, she went to kiss Elijah on the cheek, but he turned to look at her just that moment, causing her to kiss him on the mouth instead. He wasn't sure if he had ever thought about kissing her, but something in him wanted to now, so he kissed back.

The kiss lasted half a minute before Sarah suddenly realized what she had done and ran off, feeling terribly embarrassed. She had been friends with Elijah and his wife since long before she died 7 years ago. She felt like she was betraying Esther, his wife, and Elijah both.

Elijah didn't even get a chance to say goodbye before he realized it was 11:00, and he still hadn't called for a cab. Somehow, he forgot to charge his phone last night, so he had to run to the counter to ask to use the phone.

Just as he got to the counter he heard a horn honk, and Denise said, Sarah already called your cab hon. Ya better get goin’.

Elijah got in the cab and the driver, Jamal, said, "To the airport and back again with your family, right? Don't worry bout no fare either, Gracie called and said to put it on her tab. She said it's your birthday. Happy birthday my man, how old
