दुष्करं निष्प्रतिद्वन्द्वं चिकीर्षन् कर्म वानरः । समुदण्रशिरोग्रीवो गवां पतिरिवाबभौ ।। 2

अथ वैडूर्यवर्णेषु शाद्वलेषु महाबलः । धीरः सलिलकल्पेषु विचचार यथासुखम् ।। 3

द्विजान् वित्रासयन् धीमानुरसा पादपान् हरन् । मृगांश्व सुबहून्निघ्नन् प्रवृद्ध इव केसरी ।। 4

नीललोहितमाञ्जिष्ठपद्मवर्णैः सितासितैः । स्वभावविहितैश्वित्रैर्धातुभिः समलंकृतम् ।। 5

कामरूपिभिराविष्टमभीक्ष्णं सपरिच्छदैः । यक्षकिन्नरणन्धर्वैर्देवकल्पैंश्व पन्नगैः ।। 6

सेव्यमाने गिरिश्रेष्ठे बहुनागवरायुते । तिष्ठन् कपिवरस्तत्र ह्रदे नाग इवाबभौ ।। 7

स सूर्याय महेन्द्राय पवनाय स्वयंभुवे । भूतेभ्यश्वाञ्जलिं कृत्वा चकार गमने मतिम् ।। 8

Chapter 1

HANUMAN CROSSING THE OCEAN

Hanuman preparing himself to take the leap across the ocean (1-13)

1. Then (after Jambavan’s exhortations) Hanuman, the destroyer of foes, decided to seek out the place to which Sita was carried away by Ravana through the sky, the path traversed by the Charanas. 2. The monkey hero, who had set his mind on this difficult task, now looked formidable as he lifted up his neck and head, like the leading bull of a herd. (3-4). Like a lion, the courageous and intelligent Hanuman leisurely paced up and down the grassy slopes of the mountain resembling an expanse of water and shining like Vaidurya (emerald). Many a bird was frightened, many an animal trampled upon, and many a tree uprooted by his impact. (5-7). Impressive like an elephant in a pool, that monkey leader stood on the great mountain, which was resplendent with many wonderful mineral rocks of varied hue like blue, red, yellow and pink, and which was resorted to by crowds of serpents, besides Yakshas Kinnaras and Gandharvas capable of assuming any form, all surrounded by their retinue and rivalling the Devas in splendour.

(8-10). That noble monkey of tawny colour first saluted with joined palms the Sun-Deity, the Lord Indra, the sin-destroying Brahma and the famous devotees of the Lord. Next, turning to the east he saluted his own father, the Wind-god, and did obeisance to Rama and Lakshmana in his mind. He next bowed down his head to all the rivers and oceans, embraced all his comrades, circumambulated them, and then turned his attention to the journey he was to undertake.

अञ्जलिं प्राङ्मुखः कुर्वन् पवनायात्मयोनये । मनसाऽऽवन्द्य रामाय लक्ष्मणाय महाहरिः ।। 9

सरितः सागरांश्वापि प्रणम्य शिरसा हरिः । ज्ञातींस्तान् संपरिष्वज्य कृत्वा चापि प्रदक्षिणम् ।।10

अतिष्ठन्मार्गमावृत्य पुण्यं वायुनिषेवितम् । पुनरागमनायेति वानरैंरभिपूजितः ।। 11

इहैव तिष्ठतेत्युक्त्वा प्रदक्षिणमथाकरोत् । ततो हि ववृधे गन्तुं दक्षिणो दक्षिणां दिशम् ।। 12

प्लवङ्गप्रवरैर्द्दष्टः प्लवने कृतनिश्वयः । ववृधे रामवृद्धयर्थं समुद्र इव पर्वसु .।। 13

निष्प्रमाणशरीरः सन् लिलङ्घयिषुरर्णवम् । प्रगृह्य बलवान् बाहू लङ्कामभिमुखः स्थितः

बाहुभ्यां पीडयामास चरणाभ्याञ्व पर्वतम् ।। 14

स चचालाचलश्वापि मुहूर्तं कपिपीडितः । तरूणां पुष्पिताग्राणां सर्वं पुष्पमशातयत् ।। 15

तेन पादपमुक्तेन पुष्पौघेण सुगन्धिना । सर्वतः संवृतः शैलो बभौ पुष्पमयो यथा ।। 16

पीड्यमानस्तु बलिना महेन्द्रस्तेन पर्वतः । सलिलं संप्रसुस्त्राव मदमत्त इव द्विपः ।। 17

तेन चोत्तमवीर्येण पीड्यमानः स पर्वतः । रीतीर्निर्वर्तयामास काञ्चनाञ्जनराजतीः ।। 18

मुमोच च शिलाः शैलो विशालाः समनःशिलाः । मध्यमेनार्चिषा जुष्टो धूमराजीरिवानलः ।। 19

11. Return safe and sound, said all his monkey compatriots blessing him. He then stood there looking at the clear and breezy sky. 12. Asking his comrades to wait on there and again going around them to pay his homage, he stood there resolved to go in the southern direction, 13. As the other great monkeys looked on, Hanuman the mighty monkey leader, who had resolved to cross over to Lanka and achieve the objectives of Rama, now swelled like the ocean on the full moon day.

The reaction of the mountain (14-38)

14. Turning in the direction of Lanka and resolved to cross over the ocean to that place, he extended both his arms forward. His body swollen to huge dimensions, he pressed the mountain powerfully with his feet and arms. 15. Though motionless in itself, even that mountain trembled then for a while. As the monkey pressed on it, all the flowers on its trees fell down due to the shivering of the mountain surface. 16. Thanks to the shower of fragrant flowers that was thus released, the mountain was covered with heaps of flowers and verily appeared as made of flowers. 17. The mountain Mahendra, pressed powerfully by Hanuman, also shed streams of water like an elephant in rut. 18. Under the powerful pressure exerted by him, that mountain revealed streaks of gold, silver and antimony in the ruts formed by its cracked surface. 19. From the rocks in its middle region, which had deposits of sulphur, flames of fire shot forth as smoke from a fire.

हरिणा पीड्यमानेन पीड्यमानानि सर्वशः । गुहाविष्टानि भूतानि विनेदुर्विकृतैः स्वरैः ।। 20

स महासत्त्वसन्नादः शैंलपीडानिमित्तजः । ।पृयिवीं पूरयामास दिशश्वोपवनानि च ।। 21

शिरोभिः पृथुभिः सर्पा व्यक्तस्वस्तिकलक्षणैः । वमंन्तः पावकं घोरं ददंशुर्दशनैः शिलाः ।। 22

तास्तदा सविषैर्दष्टाः कुपितैस्तैर्महाशिलाः । जज्वलुः पावकोद्दीप्ता बिभिदुश्व सहस्त्रधा ।। 23

यानि चौषधजालानि तस्मिञ्जातानि पर्वते । विषघ्नान्यपि नागानां न शेकुः शमितुं विषम् ।। 24

अपरे तु महाकाया वमन्तोऽग्निं स्वतेजसा । कन्दरेभ्यो विनिष्पेतुः कपिपादनिपीडिताः ।। 25

गिरेराक्रम्यमाणस्य तरवस्तरुणाङ्कुराः । मुमुचुः पुष्पवर्षाणि व्यक्तमुत्पलगन्धिनः ।। 26

गैरिकाञ्जनसंजुष्टा - हरितालसमावृताः । व्यदीर्यन्त गिरेस्तस्य शिलास्ताः समनःशिलाः।। 27

सचन्दनारुणस्ताम्रश्वित्रः काननधातुभिः । क्षिप्तः शिखिनिभैर्दींपैर्दीप्तगैरिकधातुभिः ।। 28

भिद्यतेऽयं गिरिर्भूतैरिति मत्वा तपस्विनः । त्रस्ता विद्याधरास्तस्मादुत्पेतुः स्त्रीगणैः सह ।। 29

पानभूमिगतं हित्वा हैममासवभाजनम् । पात्राणि च महार्हाणि करकांश्व हिरण्मयान् ।। 30

लेह्यानुच्चावचान् भक्ष्यान् मांसानि विविधानि च । आर्षभाणि च चर्माणि खङ्गांश्व कनकत्सरून् ।। 31

20. When the monkey leader pressed the mountain, the denizens of the forest that were hiding in their caves felt that pressure and ran out in all directions uttering pitiable howls. 21. Those loud cries from the mountain under pressure spread everywhere on land, in the sky and over the mountain valleys. 22. Vomiting poisonous flames, the serpents raised their huge hoods with brilliant Swastika marks and bit at the rocks. 23. Bitten thus by those highly poisonous serpents, those rocks became brilliant, as if lit by fire. And they broke into thousand bits besides. 24. None of the herbs of the mountain, though endowed with antidotal virtues, could neutralise the poison of those serpents. 25. Others with huge bodies came out of their caverns, vomiting fire to exhibit their own prowess, only to be trampled under the feet of that monkey. 26. The trees growing on that mountain and having tender shoots, all shed showers of flowers which had the fragrance of sandal. 27. The rocks of the mountain with red earth mixed with antimony and sulphur of yellow colour burst into pieces. 28. That mountain, pink like sandalwood and multi-coloured with the various brilliant metallic deposits of its forests, cracked, emitting shining flames like those of fire.

(29-31). This mountain is being burst by the Bhutas, so thought the ascetics performing austerities on the mountain. With the same impression, up went from the mountain the picnicking Vidyadharas with their women-folk, leaving behind liquor pots of gold, costly vases, golden waterpots, rare unguents, various kinds of meat preparations, swords and shields of skin.

कृतकण्ठगुणाः क्षीबा रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनाः । रक्ताक्षाः पुष्कराक्षाश्व गगनं प्रतिपेदिरे ।। 32

हारनूपुरकेयूरपारिहार्यधगः स्त्रियः । विस्मिताः सस्मितास्तस्थुराकाशे रमणैः सह ।। 33

दर्शयन्तो महाविद्यां विद्याधरमहर्षयः । सहितास्तस्थुराकाशे वीक्षाञ्चक्रुश्व पर्वतम् ।। 34

शुश्रुवुश्व तदा शब्दमृषीणां भावितात्मनाम् । चारणानाञ्व सिद्धानां स्थितानां विमलेऽम्बरे ।। 35

एष पर्वतसङ्काशो हनुमान् मारुतात्मजः । तितीर्षति महावेगः समुद्रं मकरालयम् ।। 36

रामार्थं वानरार्थं च चिकीषन् कर्म दुष्करम् । समुद्रस्य परं पारं दुष्प्रापं प्रास्तुमिच्छति ।। 37

इति विद्याधराः श्रुत्वा वचस्तेषां तपस्विनाम् । तमप्रमेयं दद्दशुः पर्वते वानरर्षभम् ।। 38

दुधुवे च स रोमाणि चकम्पे चाचलोपमः । ननाद सुमहानादं सुमहानिव तोयदः ।। 39

आनुपूर्व्येण वृत्तश्व लाङ्गूलं रोमभिश्चितम् । उत्पतिष्यन् विचिक्षेप पक्षिराज इवोरगम् ।। 40

तस्य लाङ्गूलमाविद्धमतिवेगस्य पृष्ठतः । दद्दशे गरुडेनेव ह्रियमाणो महोरगः ।। 41

बाहू संस्तम्भयामास महापरिघसन्निभौ । ससाद च कपिः कठयां चरणौ सञ्चुकोच च ।। 42

संहृत्य च भुजौ श्रीमांस्तथैव च शिरोधराम् । तेजः सत्त्वं तथा वीर्यमाविवेश स वीर्यवान् ।। 43

32. Those Vidyadharas who wore garlands on their necks, who had eyes like the petals of white lotus flower reddened out of intoxication, and who were decorated with red garlands, and red sandal paste, ascended the sky. 33. Smiling with wonder, their women, wearing pearl necklaces, anklets, armlets and bracelets and other ornaments, stood gazing in the sky. 34. The Vidyadharas and the Rishis possessed of great psychic powers also stood in the sky looking at the mountain. 35. There was audible at that time the following speech of the meditative Rishis, the Siddhas, and the Charanas poised in the clear sky: 36. "Hanuman, the son of the Wind-deity, huge like a mountain in size and noted for his prowess, is bent on crossing the ocean inhabited by whales and other aquatic creatures. 37. For the sake of Rama and the monkeys he is going to accomplish a task that is too difficult for anyone else, namely to cross the seas and reach the other side." 38. The Vidyadharas, who heard the above words of the ascetics, viewed the monkey leader of unimaginably huge size standing on that mountain.

Hanuman’s resolve and his taking the leap (39-62)

39. That mountain-like Hanuman now shook his body spreading his falling hair far and wide, and gave out a roar resembling the sound of a thunder clap. 40. Ready to leap, he raised, and whirled his round and hairy tail as Garuda does with a serpent. 41. His tail, whirled in the above manner, looked like a great serpent dragged by Garuda. 42. Now he stiffened and pressed down his arms resembling mighty iron clubs, and crouched and contracted his waist and pressed his feet on the ground firmly. 43. That auspicious one of tremendous might, who stood contracting his arms-and neck, now roused up all the reserve of his prowess, manliness and vitality.

मार्गमालोकयन्दूरादूर्ध्वं प्रणिहितेक्षणः । रुरोध हृदये प्राणानाकाशमवलोकयन् ।। 44

पद्भयां द्दढमवस्थानं कृत्वा स कपिकुञ्जरः ।

निकुञ्वय कर्णौ हनुमानुत्पतिष्यन् महाबलः । वानरान् वानरश्रेष्ठ इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ;। 45

यथा राघवनिर्मुक्तः शरः श्वसनविक्रमः । गच्छेत्तद्वद्गमिष्यामि लङ्कां रावणपालिताम् ।। 46

न हि द्रक्ष्यामि यदि तां लङ्कायां जनकात्मजाम् । अनेनैव हि वेगेन गमिष्याभि सुरालयम् ।। 47

यदि वा त्रिदिवे सीतां न द्रक्ष्याम्यकृतश्रमः । बद्ध्वा राक्षसराजानमानयिष्यामि रावणम् ।। 48

सर्वथा कृतकार्योऽहमेष्यामि सह सीतया । आनयिष्यामि वा लङ्का समुत्पाठय सरावणाम् ।। 49

एवमुक्त्वा तु हनुमान् वानरान् वानरोत्तमः । उत्पपाताथ वेगेन वेगवानविचारयन् ।।

सुपर्णमिव चात्मानं मेने स कपिकुञ्जरः ।। 50

समुत्पतति तस्मिंस्तु वेगात्ते नगरोहिणः । संहृत्य विटपान् सर्वान् समुत्पेतुः समन्ततः ।। 51

स मत्तकोयष्टिमकान् पादपान् पुष्पशालिनः । उद्वहन्नूरुवेगेन जगाम विमलेऽम्बरे ।। 52

ऊरुवेगोद्धता वृक्षा मुहूर्तं कपिमन्वयुः । प्रस्थितं दीर्घमध्वानं स्वबन्धुमिव बान्धवाः ।। 53

तदूरुवेगोन्माथेताः सालाश्चान्ये नगोत्तमाः । अनुजग्मुर्हनूमन्तं सैन्या इव महीपतिम् ।। 54

44. Raising his eye-balls up and scanning the sky afar towards his path through it, he controlled his vital energy and confined it to his heart. 45. That lord of monkeys of great prowess, pressing his arms firmly and flattening his ears, now decided on leaping fast through the sky and said as follows to his comrades, the other monkeys: 46. "I shall go towards Lanka protected by Ravana, just like a wind-swift arrow released by Rama. 47. If I fail to find Sita in Lanka I shall go to the heaven of the Devas with the same speed. 48. If I fail to discover Sita even in that heavenly region, I shall with utmost ease bind Ravana with cords and bring him here. 49. In every way I shall achieve the task on hand and return with Sita; otherwise I shall uproot the whole of Lanka with Ravana in it and carry it here."

50. After he had spoken thus to his comrades, that leader of monkeys, Hanuman of tremendous speed, stood meditating on Garuda, excluding all other thoughts from the mind. Then that lord of monkeys rocketed himself with great force into the sky. 51. When he rose up thus with great force, all the trees on that mountain also rose up with their branches, sucked up by the force he generated 52. Hanuman thus leaped up into the sky followed by the trees full of intoxicated birds and various kinds of flowers. 53. The trees that went up with great speed followed him for a time just as people follow a relative starting on a long travel. 54. The Sal and other trees which were uprooted by Hanuman’s speed followed him for a time as soldiers follow their king.

सुपुप्पिताग्रैर्बहुभिः पादपैरन्वितः कपिः । हनुमान् पर्वताकारो बभूवाद्भुतदर्शनः ।। 55

सारवन्तोऽथ ये वृक्षा न्यमज्जन् लवणाभसि । भयादिव महेन्द्रस्य पर्वता वरुणालये ।। 56

स नानाकुसुमैः कीर्णः कपिः साङ्कुरकोरकैः । शुशुभे मेघसङ्काशः खद्योतैरिव पर्वतः ।। 57

विमुक्तास्तस्य वेगेन मुत्तवा पुष्पाणि ते द्रुमाः । अवाशीर्यन्त सलिले निवृत्ताः सुहृदो यथा ।। 58

लघुत्वेनोपपन्नं तद्विचित्रं सागरेऽपतत् । द्रुमाणां विविधं पुष्पं कपिवायुसमीरितम् ।। 59

ताराचितमिवाकाशं प्रबभौ स महार्णवः ।। 60

पुष्पौघेणानुबद्धेन नानावर्णेन वानरः । बभौ मेघ इवोद्यन् वै विद्युद्गणविभूषितः ।। 61

तस्य वेगसमाधूतैः पुष्पैस्तोयमद्दश्यत । ताराभिरभिरामाभिरुदिताभिरिवाम्बरम् ।। 62

प्रचकर्ष महामेघं समुपोद्धातविद्युतम् । प्रबलः कपिराजस्य वायुर्मार्गे विनिस्सृतः ।। 63

समुत्पतितमेघस्य समुद्धूतजलस्य च । सममासीत्तदा रूपं सागरस्याम्बरस्य च ।। 64

तस्याम्बरगतौ बाहू दद्दशाते प्रसारितौ । पर्वताग्राद्विनिष्क्रान्तौ पञ्चास्याविव पन्नगौ ।। 65

पिबन्निव बभौ चापि सोर्मिमालं महार्णवम् । पिपासुरिव चाकाशं दद्दशे स महाकपिः ।। 66

55. The mountain-like Hanuman, surrounded by various profusely flowering trees, presented a wonderful sight. 56. Shortly after, all the trees with their heavy trunks fell down into the salty ocean just as mountains do out of fear of Indra. 57. That monkey, covered all over with various kinds of flowers, buds and tender shoots, appeared like a mountain with fire-flies all over. 58. The trees, uprooted by Hanuman’s speed with all their flowers shed, now fell down into the water just as a traveller’s friends return after setting him on the journey. 59. The numerous flowers of varied hues, light in weight and raised by the wind caused by the speed of the monkey, now fell into the ocean. 60. As a result the expansive sea looked like the sky filled with stars. 61. The rows of flowers of varied colours that followed him presented him like a rising cloud beautified by streaks of lightning. 62. The flowers that were scattered in the water by Hanuman’s speed made the ocean shine like the sky when all the stars have dawned.

The picture of Hanuman in the sky (63-95)

63. The powerful wind raised by that monkey leader along his path in the sky attracted upwards expansive clouds with streaks of lightning in their midst. 64. There was a resemblance between the sky with uplifted clouds and the sea stirred by mighty waves caused by Hanuman’s passage through the sky. 65. The outstretched arms of Hanuman directed towards his path in the sky looked like two five-hooded serpents emerging ot of a mountain peak. 66. (As he rose up and dived like Garuda), it looked as if he were going to drink up the ocean and suck up the sky.

तस्य विद्युत्प्रभाकारे वायुमार्गानुसारिणः । नयने विप्रकाशेते पर्वतस्थाविवानलौ ।। 67

पिङ्गे पिङ्गाक्षमुख्यस्य बृहती परिमण्डले । चक्षुषी संप्रकाशेते चन्द्रसूर्याविवोदितौ ।। 68

मुखं नासिकया तस्य ताम्रया ताम्रमावभौ । सन्ध्यया समभिस्पृष्टं यथा सूर्यस्य मण्डलम् ।। 69

लाङ्गूलञ्व समाविद्धं प्लवमानस्य शोभते । अम्बरे वायुपुत्रस्य शक्रध्वज इवोच्छ्रितः ।। 70

लाङ्गूलचक्रेण महान् शुक्लदंष्टोऽनिलात्मजः । व्यरोचत महाप्राज्ञः परिवेषीव भास्करः ।। 71

स्फिग्देशेनाभिताम्रेण रराज स महाकपिः । महता दारितेनेव गिरिर्गैरिकधातुना ।। 72

तस्य वानरसिंहस्य प्लवमानस्य सागरम् । कक्षान्तरगतो वायुर्जीमूत इव गर्जति ।। 73

खे यथा निपतन्त्युल्का ह्युत्तरान्ताद्विनिस्सृता । द्दश्यते सानुबन्धा च तथा स कपिकुञ्जरः ।। 74

पतत्पतङ्गसङ्काशो व्यायतः शुशुभे कपिः । प्रवृद्ध इव मातङ्गः कक्ष्यया बध्यमानया ।। 75

उपरिष्टाच्छरीरेण छायया चावगाढया । सागरे मारुताविष्टा नौरिवासीत्तदा कपिः ।। 76

यं यं देशं समुद्रस्य जगाम स महाकपिः । स स तस्याङ्गवेगेन सोन्माद इव लक्ष्यते ।। 77

सागरस्योर्मिजालानि उरसा शैलवर्ष्मणा । अभिघ्नंस्तु महावेगः पुप्लुवे स महाकपिः ।। 78

67. The eyes of Hanuman coursing through the skies were brilliant like lightning and looked like the flames of two fires on a mountain. 68. The two huge eyes of that tawny-coloured one looked as if the sun and the moon were simultaneously shining in the horizon on a full moon day. 69. His face with its coppery nose resembled the sun at the time of sunset. 70. His tail lifted erect in the course of his movement in the sky looked like the flag staff of Indra installed in the sky. 71. When that intelligent son of the Wind-god, possessed of white fangs, encircled himself with his tail, he looked like the sun with his aura of rays around him. 72. His red anus looked like a cleft in a mountain stained with the red metallic earth within it. 73. Like a thunder clap the wind passed through his armpits, as he was leaping across the ocean. 74. He resembled a meteor with a long tail, streaking across and falling in the northern sky. 75. With his wearing cloth wound round his waist, that monkey leader of tremendous size and of luminosity like the rising sun, resembled an elephant in rut with a binding rope round his body. 76. Having his body above the ocean’s surface and his shadow on it, he looked like a ship that is tossed about by the wind.

77. Over whatever part of the ocean he traversed, the water underneath was found stirred upside down by the force generated from him. 78. That great monkey speeding above the ocean shattered the big waves rising from the ocean surface.

कपिवातश्व बलवान् मेघवातश्व निस्सृतः । सागरं भीमनिर्घोषं कम्पयामासतुर्भृशम् ।। 79

विकर्पन्नूर्मिजालानि बृहन्ति लवणांभसि । पुप्लुवे कंषिशार्दूलो विकिरन्निव रोदसी ।। 80

मेरुमन्दरसङ्काशानुद्गतान् स महार्णवे । अत्यक्रामन्महावेगस्तरङ्गान् गणयन्निव ।। 81

तस्य वेगसमुद्धूतं जलं सजलदं तदा । अम्बरस्थं विबभ्राज शारदाभ्रमिवाततम् ।। 82

तिमिनक्रझषाः कूर्मा द्दश्यन्ते विवृतास्तदा । वस्त्रापकर्षणेनेव शरीराणि शरीरिणिाम् ।। 83

प्लवमानं समीक्ष्याथ भुजङ्गास्सागरालयाः । व्योभ्नि तं कपिशार्दूलं सुपर्ण इति मेनिरे ।। 84

दशयोजनविस्तीर्णा त्रिंशद्योजनमायता । छाया वानरसिंहस्य जले चारुतराऽभवत् ।। 85

श्वेताभ्रघनराजीव वायुपुत्रानुगामिनी । तस्य सा शुशुभे छाया वितता लवणांभसि ।। 86

शुशुभे स महातेजा महाकायो महाकपिः । वायुमार्गे निरालम्बे पक्षवानिव पर्वतः ।। 87

येनासौ याति बलवान् वेगेन कपिकुञ्जरः । तेन मार्गेण सहसा द्रोणीकृत इवार्णवः ।। ।। 88

आपाते पक्षिसङ्घानां पक्षिराज इव व्रजन् । हनुमान् मेघजालानि प्रकर्षन् मारुतो यथा ।। 89

पाण्डुरारुणवर्णानि नीलमाञ्जिष्ठकानि च । कपिनाऽऽकृष्यमाणानि महाभ्राणि चकाशिरे ।। 90

79. The powerful wind stirred by him and the monsoon wind together stirred the ocean to its depth, producing a tremendous roar. 80. The lordly monkey as he leaped forward attracting with him a line of mighty waves, looked as if he were drawing a dividing line between the earth and the sky. 81. That monkey, coursing at great speed, also gave the impression that he was on an expedition to count the number of mountain-like waves that rose on the high seas. 82. The water of the ocean raised by his speed and mixed with vapoury clouds presented the appearance of an expansive sheet of autumnal cloud. 83. The whales, fish, and tortoises that then emerged from the water of the ocean resembled the limbs of the human body with clothes removed. 84. The serpents inhabiting the seas got frightened on seeing the monkey leader coursing through the sky, thinking that it was Garuda.

85. The body of that illustrious monkey, ten Yojanas in girth and thirty Yojanas in height, was reflected in all its grandeur in the water of the ocean. 86. The shadow of Hanuman extending in the ocean and following him, shone like an expanse of white clouds over the ocean. 87. The luminous and huge-sized monkey leader Hanuman leaping across the ocean looked like a winged mountain hanging supportless in the sky. 88. The surface of the ocean below that powerful Hanuman’s route in the sky, looked like a mountain valley (as it was pressed down by the force above, with the water rising on both the sides.) 89. Hanuman moved in the sky, the resort of birds, like Garuda the king of the birds, while like the winds he dragged lines of clouds with him. 90. The massive clouds attracted by the monkey shone in their different colours of white, red, blue, and yellow.

प्रविशन्नभ्रजालानि निष्पतंश्व पुनः पुनः । प्रच्छन्नश्व प्रकाशश्व चन्द्रमा इव लक्ष्यते ।। 91

प्लवमानन्तु तं द्दष्ट्वा प्लवङ्गं त्वरितं तदा । ववर्षुः पुष्पवर्षाणि देवगन्धर्वदानवाः ।। 92

तताप न हि तं सूर्यः प्लवन्तं वानरेश्वरम् । सिषेवे च तदा वायू रामकार्यार्थसिद्धये ।। 93

ऋषयस्तुष्टुवुश्चैनं प्लवमानं विहायसा । जगुश्व देवगन्धर्वाः प्रशंसन्तो महौजसम् ।। 94

नागाश्व तुष्टुवुर्यक्षा रक्षांसि विबुधाः खगाः । प्रेक्ष्य सर्वे कपिवरं सहसा विगतक्लमम् ।। 95

तस्मिन् प्लवगशार्दूले प्लवमाने हनूमति । इक्ष्वाकुकुलमानार्थी चिन्तयामास सागरः ।। 96

साहाय्यं वानरेन्द्रस्य यदि नाहं हनूमतः । करिष्यामि भविष्यामि सर्ववाच्यो विवक्षताम् ।। 97

अहमिक्ष्वाकुनाथेन सगरेण विवर्धितः । इक्ष्वाकुसचिवश्वायं नावसीदितुमर्हति ।। 98

तथा मया विधातव्यं विश्रमेत यथा कपिः । शेषञ्च मयि विश्रान्तः सुखेनातिपतिष्यति ।। 99

इति कृत्वा मतिं साध्वीं समुद्रश्छन्नमंभसि । हिरण्यनाभं मैनाकमुवाच गिरिसत्तमम् ।। 100

त्वमिहासुरसङ्घानां पातालतलवासिनाम् । देवराज्ञा गिरिश्रेष्ठ परिघः सन्निवेशितः ।। 101

त्वमेषां जातवीर्याणां पुनरेवोत्त्पतिष्यताम् । पातालस्याप्रमेयस्य द्वारमावृत्य तिष्ठसि ।। 102

91. He shone like the moon as he became repeatedly covered by clouds and emerged out of them.

92. Then the Devas, the Gandharvas and the Danavas showered flowers on Hanuman who was thus speeding towards Lanka. 93. The Sun-Deity spared from extreme heat that messenger of Rama leaping towards Lanka in order to achieve Rama’s purpose. The Wind-deity too served him with a cool breeze. 94. The Rishis extolled that speedy traveller through the sky, while the Devas and Gandharvas sang the praise of that heroic one. 95. Seeing the leader of monkeys tireless, the Rakshasas, the sky ranging serpents, Yakshas and Devas sang his praise in great joy.

Mt. Mainaka’s offer of resting place (96-154)

96. As Hanuman, that noblest of monkeys, was travelling thus, the Lord of the ocean mused as follows, ready to do honour to the royal line of Ikshvakus:97. "If I do not help this monkey leader now, I shall become the object of criticism of all people who have the power of speech. 98. My area had been augmented by Sagara, a scion of Ikshvaku’s line, and he (Hanuman) is one serving a prince of that line. So I should see that he does not get tired. 99. It is my duty therefore to see that he is assuaged of his exhaustion. So if I provide him with some rest, he will be able to cover the remaining distance to Lanka easily."

100. Taking this noble resolve, the Ocean-deity spoke as follows to the golden-hued Mount Mainaka, offspring of Mena, who was hidden under the seas: 101. "Oh noble mountain! The Lord of the Devas has posted you in the nether world (Patala) to bar the doors against the host of Asuras, 102. So you are staying there blocking the path from the nether world against these Asuras who are very powerful and ever attempting to come out.

तिर्यगूर्ध्वमधश्चैव शक्तिस्ते शैल वर्धितुम् । तस्मात् सञ्वोदयामि त्वामुत्तिष्ठ गिरिसत्तम ।। 103

स एष कपिशार्दूलस्त्वामुपर्येति वीर्यवान् । हनूमान् रामकार्यार्थं भीमकर्मा खमाप्लुतः ।। 104

अस्य साह्यं मया कार्यमिक्ष्वाकुकुलवर्तिनः । मम हीक्ष्वाकवः पूज्याः परं पूज्यतमास्तव ।। 105

कुरु साचिव्यमस्माकं न नः कार्यमतिक्रमेत् । कर्तव्यमकृतं कार्यं सतां मन्युमुदीरयेत् ।। 106

सलिलादूर्ध्वमुत्तिष्ठ तिष्ठत्वेष कपिस्त्वयि । अस्माकमतिथिश्चैव पूज्यश्व प्लवतां वरः ।। 107

चामीकरमहानाभ देवगन्धर्वसेवित । हनुमांस्त्वयि विश्रान्तस्ततः शेषं गमिष्यति ।। 108

काकुत्स्थस्यानुशंस्यञ्व मैथिल्याश्व विवासनम् । श्रमञ्व प्लवगेन्द्रस्य समीक्ष्योत्थातुमर्हसि ।। 109

हिरण्यनाभो मैनाको निशम्य लवणांभसः । उत्पपात जलात्तूर्णं महाद्रुमलतायुतः ।। 110

स सागरजलं भित्त्वा बभूवाभ्युत्थितस्तदा । यथा जलधरं भित्त्वा दीप्तरश्मिर्दिवाकरः ।। 111

स महात्मा मुहूर्तेन पर्वतः सलिलावृतः । दर्शयामास श्रृङ्गगणि सागरेण नियोजितः ।। 112

शातकुंभनिभैः श्रृङ्गैः सकिन्नरमहोरगैः । आदित्योदयसङ्काशैरालिखद्भिरिवाम्बरम् । 113

तप्तजाम्बूनदैः श्रृङ्गैः पर्वतस्य समुत्थितैः । आकाशं शस्त्रसङ्काशमभवत् काञ्वनप्रभम् ।। 114

103. O mountain! You have got the capacity to grow side-ways, upwards and downwards. It is therefore, O noble mountain, that I am prompting you to rise up. 104. The powerful monkey leader Hanuman, in order to accomplish a difficult task for Rama, is flying through the sky. He is now coursing in the sky above the place where you are situated. 105. It is my duty to help him; for, the members of Ikshvaku’s line are to be honoured by me. So also you too are bound to worship them as deserving of the highest respect. 106. Do me this much of service. The discharge of our duty should not be delayed. For, duties are to be performed in proper time. Otherwise it does not befit the conduct expected of a good man. 107. Therefore, O noblest of mountains, emerge from the sea and allow our worthy guest, the monkey leader, to rest on you. 108. O you whose peaks are resorted to by Devas and Gandharvas! If Hanuman is able to rest on you and assuage his exhaustion, he will easily cover the rest of the distance. 109. Realising the noble qualities of Rama, a scion of Kakustha’s line, his separation from his wife Sita the princess of Mithila, and also the strain on this noble monkey leader, you ought to come above the sea level."

110. Hearing the words of the lord of the ocean, Mount Mainaka, having many golden peaks and huge trees and creepers on them, came up quickly from the water. 111. Mainaka, who now emerged from the water of the seas, shone like the sun coming out of a mass of clouds. 112. Commissioned as above by the lord of the seas, that mountain of endless excellences emerged from the seas in a trice and his peaks became visible above the water level of the ocean. 113-114. These sun-like and golden peaks of the mountain touching the sky which Kinnaras and great serpents inhabit, lent its brilliance of gold to the sky that was blue-black like steel.

जातरूपमयः श्रृङ्गभ्राजमनिः स्वयप्रभः । आदित्यशतसङ्कार्शः साऽभवोद्गारेसेत्तमः ।। 115

तमुत्थितमसङ्गेन हनुमानग्रतः स्थितम् । मध्ये लवणतोयस्य विघ्नोऽयमिति निश्वितः ।। 116

स तमुच्छ्रितमत्यर्थं महावेगो महाकपिः । उरसा पातयामास जीमूतमिव मारुतः ।। 117

स तदा पातितस्तेन कपिना पर्वतोत्तमः । बुद्धवा तस्य कपेर्वेगं जहृर्ष च ननन्द च ।। 118

तमाकाशगतं वीरमाकाशे समुपस्थितः । प्रीतो हृष्टमना वाक्यमब्रवीत् पर्वतः कपिम् ।।

मानुषं धारयन् रूपमात्मनः शिखरे स्थितः ।। 119

दुष्करं कृतवान् कर्म त्वमिदं वानरोत्तम ।। 120

निपत्य मम श्रृङ्गेषु विश्रमस्व यथासुखम् ।। 121

राघवस्य कुले जातैरुदधिः परिवर्धितः । स त्वां रामहिते युक्तं प्रत्यर्चयति सागरः ।। 122

कृते च प्रतिकर्तव्यमेष धर्मः सनातनः । सोऽयं तत्प्रतिकारार्थी त्वत्तः संमानमर्हति ।। 123

त्वन्निमित्तमनेनाहं बहुमानात् प्रचोदितः । योजनानां शतञ्चापि कपिरेष समाप्लुतः ।। 124

तव सानुषु विश्रान्तः शेषं प्रक्रमतामिति । तिष्ठ त्वं कपिशार्दूल मयि विश्रम्य गम्यताम् ।। 125

115. Those shining golden peaks of the mountain with their natural brilliance resembled a hundred suns in their luminosity.

116. Hanuman on seeing the motionless mountain emerging before him from the sea felt that it was obstructing his way. 117. By a push of his breast that great monkey leader of tremendous speed thrust aside and removed that high mountain from his path, just as a storm pushed aside an expanse of clouds. 118. Thus pushed aside by him the Mount Mainaka became wonder-struck at the power of that monkey leader, and also got delighted on that account.

119. That mountain, which had risen above the ocean level into the sky, now assumed a human form, and standing on its own peak, addressed the monkey hero in the sky as follows: 120. "O monkey leader! You have done this task impossible for any other to accomplish, 121. Descend on my peak and rest for a while. 122. The ancestors of Raghava in olden days augmented the extent of the ocean. Therefore the lord of the ocean wants to adore you in return as an act of gratitude. For, you are engaging yourself in the service of Rama. 123. It is according to the path laid down by Eternal Dharma (Sanatana Dharma) to requite the help that one has received from another. So he who is desirous of doing a service in return, deserves your consideration. 124-125. The lord of the ocean has in all humility commissioned me, saying, ‘This monkey leader wants to cover the hundred Yojanas at one leap. Let him assuage his fatigue in your valley and then cover the rest of the distance.’ So, O noble monkey leader! You stop for a while on my peak and after you get relief from your fatigue, move on as you like.

तदिदं गन्धवत् स्वादु कन्दमूलफलं बहु । तदास्वाद्य हरिश्रेष्ठ विश्रान्तोऽनुगमिष्यसि ।। 126

अस्माकमपि सम्बन्धः कपिमुख्य त्वयाऽस्ति वै । प्रख्यातस्त्रिषु लोकेषु महागुणपरिग्रहः ।। 127

वेगवन्तः प्लवन्तो ये प्लवगा मारुतात्मज । तेषां मुख्यतमं मन्ये त्वामहं कपिकुञ्जर ।। 128

अतिथिः किल पूजार्हः प्राकृतोऽपि विजानता । धर्मं जिज्ञासमानेन किं पुनस्त्वाद्दशो महान्।। 129

त्वं हि देववरिष्ठस्य मारुतस्य महात्मनः । पुत्रस्तस्यैव वेगेन सद्दशः कपिकुञ्जर ।। 130

पूजिते त्वयि धर्मज्ञ पूजां प्राप्नोति मारुतः । तस्मात् त्वं पूजनीयो मे श्रृणु चाप्यत्र कारणम् ।। 131

पूर्वं कृतयुगे तात पर्वताः पक्षिणोऽभवन् । ते हि जग्मुर्दिशः सर्वा गरुडानिलवेगिनः ।। 132

ततस्तेषु प्रयातेषु देवसङ्घाः सहर्षिभिः । भूतानि च भयं जग्मुस्तेषां पतनशङ्कया ।। 133

ततः क्रुद्धः सहस्त्राक्षः पर्वतानां शतक्रतुः । पक्षांश्विच्छेद वज्रेण तत्र तत्र सहस्त्रशः ।। 134

स मामुपगतः क्रुद्धो वज्रमुद्यम्य देवराट् । ततोऽहं सहसा क्षिप्तः श्वसनेन महात्मना ।। 135

अस्मिन् लवणतोये च प्रक्षिप्तः प्लवगोत्तम । गुप्तपक्षसमग्रश्व तव पित्राऽभिरक्षितः ।। 136

ततोऽहं मानयामि त्वां मान्यो हि मम मारुतः । त्वया मेयेष सम्बन्धः कपिमुख्य महागुणः ।। 137

126. O noble monkey leader! Therefore partake of my hospitality consisting in tasty fruits and roots of attractive flavour, and then after getting some relief from your exhaustion, proceed without delay. 127. O noble one! There is also a relationship between you and me. It is well known that one should welcome and extend hospitality to personages of great excellence. 128. O greatest of monkeys! O son of the Wind-god! I consider you as one capable of the highest speed among monkeys noted for that quality. 129. It is well known among those with discriminative power and knowledge of Dharma that a guest, however insignificant, deserves hospitality. Then what to speak of a great personage like you! 130. As for you, the greatest of monkeys, you are the son of the Wind-god, one of the celebrated celestials, and in speed you are equal to him. 131. O one acquainted with Dharma! If you are adored, the Wind-deity too is adored. So you are one adorable by me. There is another reason for it too. Now listen. 132. O dear one! In olden days, in Krita Yuga, mountains had wings. They used to fly about in all directions with the speed equal to that of Garuda and the wind. 133. When they flew about like that, the Rishis, the Devas and all living beings were afraid that they might fall down; 134. For that reason Indra, the lord of the Devas noted for his thousand eyes and for having performed a hundred Yajnas became angry with us, and with his thunderbolt weapon cut our wings into bits and scattered them in many places. 135. The wrathful Indra rushed at me also, aiming the thunderbolt weapon. Then the great Wind-god carried me away quickly and cast me aside. 136. O monkey hero! In this way your father, the Wind-god, saved me and dropped me in the saline ocean without any harm to my wings. 137. Therefore I adore you; for, the Wind-god is adorable to me. Thus of great excellence is the relation established between you and me.

तस्मिन्नेवं गते कार्ये सागरस्य ममैव च । प्रीतिं प्रीतमनाः कर्तुं त्वमर्हसि महाकपे ।। 138

श्रमं मोक्षय पूजाञ्च गृहाण कपिसत्तम । प्रीतिञ्च बहु मन्यस्व प्रीतोऽस्मि तव दर्शनात् ।। 139

एवमुक्तः कपिश्रेष्ठस्तं नगोत्तममब्रवीत् । प्रीतोऽस्मि कृतमातिथ्यं मन्युरेषोऽपनीयताम् ।। 140

त्वरते कार्यकालो मे अहश्वाप्यतिवर्तते । प्रतिज्ञा च मया दत्ता न स्थातव्यमिहान्तरे ।। 141

इत्युत्तवा पाणिना शैलमालभ्य हरिपुङ्गवः । जगामाकाशमाविश्य वीर्यवान् प्रहसन्निव ।। 142

स पर्वतसमुद्राभ्यां बहुमानादवेक्षितः । पूजितश्वोपपन्नाभिराशीर्भिरनिलात्मजः ।। 143

अथोर्ध्वं दूरमुत्पत्य हित्वा शैलमहार्णवौ । पितुः पन्थानमास्थाय जगाम विमलेऽम्बरे ।। 144

ततश्वोर्ध्वगतिं प्राप्य गिरिं तमवलोकयन् । वायुसूनुर्निरालम्बे जगाम विमलेऽम्बरे ।। 145

तद् द्वितीयं हनुमतो द्दष्ट्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम् । प्रशशंसुः सुराः सर्वे सिद्धाश्व परमर्षयः ।। 146

देवताश्वाभवन् हृष्टास्तत्रस्थास्तस्य कर्मणा । काञ्चनस्य सुनाभस्य सहस्त्राक्षश्व वासवः ।। 147

उवाच वचनं धीमान् परितोषात् सगद्रदम् । सुनाभं पर्वतश्रेष्ठं स्वयमेव शचीपतिः ।। 148

138. That being the state of affairs, O noble monkey-hero, it is befitting that you favour me and the lord of the ocean by accepting our hospitality. 139. O noble one! Be relieved of your fatigue and also oblige us by accepting our offerings with delight. I am overjoyed to meet you." 140. To that Lord of mountains who spoke to him thus, the monkey leader said as follows with his gaze directed to him: "I am indeed pleased with your hospitality. Abandon the gloom of your mind under the impression that I have refused to accept it. 141. Now, I am being delayed by all this in the discharge of my duty. Not only that, sunset is approaching. I have taken a vow that I will not remain still in the middle of my effort to accomplish my purpose." 142. Saying so, the noble Hanuman of great prowess patted the mountain with his hand, and then with a smile on his lips was ready to proceed in the sky as before. 143. Thus Hanuman, the son of the Wind-god, was honoured by that Mountain and the Lord of the Ocean with due respect and with appropriate words of blessing. 144. Then leaving the mountain and the ocean, he soared high and traversed through the unblemished sky, the realm of his father, the Wind-god. 145. That son of the Wind-god, ascending high up, looked down at the mountain and moved supportless, through the pure sky. 146. All the Devas, Siddhas and great sages extolled him, seeing this second impossible feat of his, namely, the striking off of the mountain from his path.

147-148. Witnessing the act of the golden-hued Mount Mainaka, the thousand-eyed Indra then spoke the following words with joy over-flowing his heart and a voice throbbing with emotion:

हिरण्यनाभ शैलेन्द्र परितुष्टोऽस्मि ते भृशम् ।। 149

अभयं ते प्रयच्छामि तिष्ठ सौम्य यथासुखम् ।। 150

साह्यं कृतं ते सुमहद्विक्रान्तस्य हनूमतः । क्रमतो योजनशतं निर्भयस्य भये सति ।। 151

रामस्यैव हि दूत्येन याति दाशरथेर्हरिः । सत्क्रियां कुर्वता तस्य तोषितोऽस्मि द्दढं त्वया ।। 152

ततः प्रहर्षमगमद्विपुलं पर्वतोत्तमः । देवतानां पतिं द्दष्ट्वा परितुष्टं शतक्रतुम् ।। 153

स वै दत्तवरः शैलो बभूवावस्थितस्तदा । हनुमांश्व मुहूर्तेन व्यतिचक्राम सागरम् ।। 154

ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाश्व परमर्षयः । तं प्रयान्तं समुद्वीक्ष्य ह्याकाशे मारुतात्मजम् ।।

अब्रुवन् सूर्यसङ्काशां सुरसां नागमातरम् ।। 155

अयं वातात्मजः श्रीमान् प्लवते सागरोपरि । हनुमान् नाम तस्य त्वं मुहूर्तं विघ्नमाचर ।। 156

राक्षसं रूपमास्थाय सुघोरं पर्वतोपमम् । दंष्ट्राकरालं पिङ्गाक्षं वक्त्र कृत्वा नभःस्पृशम् ।। 157

बलमिच्छामहे ज्ञातुं भूयश्वास्य पराक्रमम् । त्वां विजेष्यत्युपायेन विषादं वा गमिष्यति ।। 158

एवमुक्ता तु सा देवी दैवतैरभिसत्कृता । समुद्रमध्ये सुरसा बिभ्रती राक्षसं वपुः ।। 159

विकृतञ्च विरूपञ्च सर्वस्य च भयावहम् । प्लवमानं हनूमन्तमावृत्येदमुवाच ह ।। 160

149. "O lordly mountain with golden-peaks! I am immensely pleased with you. 150. You shall have no reason for fear from me. Live long at ease. 151. In spite of your dangerous predicament, you have rendered a servicc to that fearless and powerful hero Hanuman who is leaping a hundred Yojanas across the sea. 152. He is going as an emissary of Rama, the son of Dasaratha. I am delighted with you who have extended hospitality to him." 153. That lordly mountain too was filled with joy to see Indra, the Lord of the Devas, pleased with him.

154. Being thus blessed by Indra that mountain Mainaka, stood firm above the sea level. And Hanuman in a short time was again engaged in his flight across the sea.

Surasa’s Obstruction (155-187)

155. Then the Devas, Siddhas, Gandharvas and the Rishis, seeing the fast-leaping son of the Wind-god, said as follows to the mother of serpents, Surasa of great splendour. 156-157. "The glorious son of the Wind-god Hanuman is leaping across the sky. You go there to cause obstruction to him for a time, assuming the form of a sky-scraping mountain with the fierce visage of a Rakshasa having terrific fangs and red eyes. 158. We shall see whether he will be able to overcome you by a stratagem, or whether he will fail and come to grief? By this means we want to test his strength and manliness."

159-160. When that celestial Surasa was thus implored by the Devas, she assumed a monstrous, ugly and terrific form befitting

Rakshasas, and obstructing the leaping Hanuman, addressed him thus:

मम भक्ष्यः प्रदिष्टस्त्वमीश्वरैर्वानरर्षभ । अहं त्वां भक्षयिष्यामि प्रविशेदं ममाननम् ।। 161

एवमुक्तः सुरसया प्राञ्जलिर्वानरर्षभः । प्रहृष्टवदनः श्रीमानिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ।। 162

रामो दाशरथिर्नाम प्रविष्टो दण्डकावनम् । लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा वैदेह्या चापि भार्यया ।। 163

अन्यकार्यविषक्तस्य बद्धवैरस्य राक्षसैः । तस्य सीता हृता भार्या रावणेन यशस्विनी।। 164

तस्याः सकाशं दूतोऽहं गमिष्ये रामशासनात् । कर्तुमर्हसि रामस्य साह्यं विषयवासिनी ।। 165

अथवा मैथिलीं द्दष्ट्वा रामं चाक्लिष्टकारिणम् । आगमिष्यामि ते वक्त्रं सत्यं प्रतिश्रृणोमि ते ।। 166

एवमुक्ता हनुमता सुरसा कामरूपिणी । अब्रवीन्नातिवर्तेन्मां कश्विदेष वरो मम ।। 167

तं प्रयान्तं समुद्वीक्ष्य सुरसा वाक्यमब्रवीत् । बलं जिज्ञासमाना वै नागमाता हनूमतः ।। 168
