The Battle of Indian Wells
A Day of Chaos!
A piercing, maniacal shriek shattered the morning clam, hanging like an oppressive cloud over the large congregation of horrified parishioners.
Pastor Timothy Franklin had been speaking on his Sunday morning theme, The Blood of Jesus,
when a young man seated near the back of the auditorium erupted violently.
Leaping to his feet, the youth screamed despicable words that scorched the air and ended up shaking his fist at the pastor, I’m going to kill you if you say another word about that blood.
He used a particularly repulsive word to describe it.
The congregation sat in startled terror as they listened to the continued threats. Even old John Marshall came out of his Sunday morning nap beside his wife Ellen and loudly mumbled, What’s that? What’s going on?
Hush,
John, his wife said. Just listen for a change!
John sat up straight and peered to the back of the auditorium with all the other people trying to get a glimpse of the person responsible for the outburst. No one could believe they were hearing such loud profanity during their morning worship time. What was going on? Why didn’t someone do something to stop it?
The young man was still in a noisy, nasty rage when he stood up and threw a song book and Bible from the back of the pew toward the pastor. He missed the pastor by fifteen feet in the large auditorium, but almost hit some of the spectators. He was screaming something about he needed to get out of there because something was hurting him.
One brave deacon tackled the raging guest but was tossed aside effortlessly by the demented man before he exited the sanctuary, screaming and swearing profusely.
A brief moment of shocked silence fell over the crowd before an unidentified voice shouted out, He’s going for a gun to kill us!
Later, no one seemed to recognize whose voice had mentioned the gun. Maybe no one wanted to own up to their own fears. Anyway, that brought on a new wave of panic among the people.
The auditorium emptied as if by magic: people screamed and pushed each other out of the way to escape the worst demons of their imagination. It was a wonder that someone wasn’t trampled as they all spewed down the front stairs of the entry to the church.
