About this ebook

In the sequel to her book 'Sent to Van Diemen's Land', Gladys delves deeper into the histories of Staffordshire people transported to Australia. Gladys has extensive experience in researching family histories. During her study of her own family tree she has been struck by the stories that have been both inspirational and harrowing. In 'Sent to Van Diemen's Land' she concentrated on the Staffordshire Chartists. In this book she concentrates more on the women convicts and their families.

    The Leedham family

Catherine Leedham was sentenced to seven years transportation at Stafford Quarter Sessions on 14 October 1850 for larceny of the person. This suggests she was a pickpocket. She was married to John Leedham on 13 October 1846 at St. Giles, Newcastle, Staffordshire. Her maiden name was Walters and she was born to Anthony and Elizabeth Walters in 1823 being christened on 27 July 1823 at St. Giles, Newcastle. In 1841, Anthony and Elizabeth are living in Taylor/Tylers Green in Newcastle with Elizabeth 12, Charles 8 and Agnes 3 weeks. Catherine is not there and I have not been able to find her on the 1841
