What Now What Next - Tony Kapel

    next

1980’s cocaine game – cross the beaches of south florida over and over again – things happen so quick these day that I forgot to get my own head together – tired of waiting and wondering when I was gonna get my chance at the big time. A friend had a bad idea with incredible results if I had the balls to do it – he set the story up nicely – bought me a drink or three and started up with me about this crazy idea he had with his other friend – one of the friends I didn’t know – how it got this far I will never know – but It seemed good.

Unload a boat – you want me to help you unload a boat – how long does that take?

he looked at me about five minutes.

I looked at him waiting for the catch – I start motioning my hand to him to speed it up – he looks at me.

That’s it – just need ya for like five minutes worth of labor and a twenty minute car ride.

A car ride – with whose car?

A friends – why – what does that matter?

Well cause…… how much is in it for me?

Alright that’s what I thought – well you will get twenty five before and another seventy five after the drop off.

    A hundred bucks an……..

A hundred bucks….no no no – ten thousand – twenty five hundred before and seventy five hundred when we get to him.

What – what the fuck – you kidding – ten grand – what are we moving?

like a hundred pounds of weed in which two of the bails have ten pounds of pure heroin – clean stuff and also he said that when we get back we can stick our hands into one of garbage bags of weed and what ever we can grab – we can have.

By this time my head was throwing numbers around – I was smiling huge but nervous – I start pacing never losing eye contact with him.

Who else’s involved? I ask him

no one – well no one else unless you think we need someone else – but if we get someone else involved we have to start dividing the amount – I was basically told we have a twenty thousand dollar budget – get who I need and the rest is up to me.

I sit next to him – the music in the room has muffled itself to high levels of greed and anxiety – I wish I didn’t bite my nails down earlier.

When does this go down?I ask as he starts stuffing shit into his pockets – he looks at his watch.

In about two hours. And he backs to the door – the music gets loud again – sounds of loot play – he opens the door and looks at me.

    You coming?

I jump to my feet yeah – fuck yeah – lets do this. cool .

Should I change? and I take a quick look at myself in the mirror.

No – its better if we don’t look suspicious – its basically a hand off and a drive off – so look normal. We get in my car and head towards the beach.

    bull

The car ride was quiet at first – the music played low as he gathered his thoughts and went over what he discussed with his friend.

    Ok this is the plan.

    Ok go.

"We are basically gonna take the third causeway to the beach – a quarter mile into it there is a little clearing… we need to pull over there and hit our hazards – what I need to do is get out of the car act as if I were checking the air in the rear tire, then as you get out of your side you need to be opening the trunk as a distraction/shield.

I was completely boggled at the fact that this guy has taken this idea so far – I was beginning to feel the fear of getting busted – my phone rings – he pokes his head up DON’T ANSWER THAT! so I let it ring – this was unsettling.

Alright pull out your spare tire. He turns around a second to get a glance of the water – he smiled big he seemed pleased with what was going on.

    And now what with it?

Nothing just prop it up and pretend you’re changing it.

From nowhere a guy comes from the bushes all quick like and throws a garbage bag in my trunk.

I froze at this and stood still – he ran back just as a cars lights show up over the bridge – I shove it to the back and go back over to the jack and quickly tighten the bolts on the wheel to make sure I can get the hell out of there. the road clears again and he shows up again with another bag and the second he gets his in and starts back to the sea grape coverage he was using, another guy runs out but he is carrying two bags one smaller then other as they were being adjusted and laid out in the trunk all comfy, he advises us to get in the car and go. So we did – he closes the trunk and we get in the car – we start it up and peel out.

In my rear view mirror I see the guy running to the bushes and I hear his engine kick in – he gases and then takes off to where his engine slowly fades into the oceans natural noise.

Him and I were stunned at what just went down – he carried a grin that was dangerous – and I was sorta shocked at what I just did – my phone rang again and he jumps to it.

Let me get that. As he grabs the phone from my hand – the call was for him.

    Yeah.

its cool. Im looking at him waiting for my next assignment – I was scared but more thrilled at it then anything. If all goes well – I will be pocketing ten G’s tonight and I couldn’t get that shit outta my head. This would’ve been a break in my latest settlement. Twenty two years old with nothing going for me then an entrapping degree in business – and with this introduction at hand – I think I may have found my new handle – the money flashed in my face big.

    He hangs up the phone

OK go to the expressway off of Biscayne and next to that hotel.

the one we took the other night?

    Yeah.

So we head for it we were there in under seven minutes – over the Downtown bridge and through it to the expressway was what was planned out in my head. I had the point A to point B situation right now.

The city lit up new this night – the colors were brighter – the buildings were taller – and if I was lucky I can get the newspaper to speak of me one day.

Tied up taxi’s driven by hiding terrorist, run away immigrants and sex freaks – block the front of the arena – so we took a right hit a wrong way street and hit the expressway. We were off and cruising a simple sixty – we took a turn and headed towards US1 – he was looking out the window as if he were looking for something.

the fuck are you looking for? I asked him

Right there – go flash your lights – flash your lights go dammit. So I flash my light – and up ahead of us was a dark Crown Victoria type car.

Here get in front of that car. So I get to the lane next to him and let him get settled behind us. He was following us and so once again my phone rings and he gets it.

OK….yeah right ..i know the spot – for sure – we’ll be there in what – like eight minutes – cool – see you there.

I was pist I didn’t know what was going on and this guy was driving me around town instead of the other way around. So I ask em. what’s the plan?

There is no plan – well not that I know of – I’m just supposed to go where this guy goes – right now im supposed to follow or him follow us to the pizza spot up the road – get a table with you and he will meet us there and we are all supposed to go get some pizza with them and eat it – all im told is we need to park close to each other – like right next to each other if possible – so that is what I am going or we have to do. I look at him cautious like.

Do worry he throws at me this isn’t a sour deal man – trust me.

    So I drove on

We got to the off ramp and the guy drops to speed limit and waves his arm out the window motioning us to go around him and let us lead.

    So we do

We get to the place and I of course have to wait for some dumbass to figure out what he is doing driving some tank sized mess in these two and four lane roads that were built for the compact car.

I keep thinking about the sick amount of cops that hang at this spot and the potential of just getting eyeballed for looking nervous.

I find a good spot in the back so I pull up to it – then I back into it – killing the lights as I do. The other guy circles the lot once then backs in the spot two from us.

Both cars unload at the same time and my friend approaches them and is greeted with a hug and his friend is introduced all like a simple friendship my friend introduces me to them and they also handle it with a handshake led hug.

"We get in line and the place is crawling with people – I scan the area while my friend and his decide on an order.

What do you want? and he hits me in the arm.

    Oh ah – ill take.

Don’t tell me tell the lady. She crunches her nose and flings her pencil up and down waiting for my order.

Oh ok I’ll ah take an order of the ten wings and…

    How hot? she asks

Oh ah I guess hot – with blue cheese – and slice of cheese pizza – but can I have the slice in a to go box?

yes sir of course – would you like a drink?

Yeah ill take a large Pepsi. She hands me an empty cup and points at the self serve fountain.

One of the guys goes to get a table and clears it off – kinda crazy how he set us up a table away from a table of officers. It made sense though – I was beginning to see how these guys function – I was just wondering how long I was gonna have to be running around town. we sat for about ten minutes chomping on some garlic rolls one of the cashiers brought out to us – she also brought over and neatly set up the parm, garlic and hot pepper shakers and then whipped out a bundle of
