CHAPTER 1
She was thinking about what he said, I love you, but…..
Carl had been a good husband who seemed to be faithful, he took good care of her and their daughter. She never had any doubts until she got chlamydia, knowing she had not been not fucking around, he was busted. Then she found out he has been having affairs since before they were married.
At first he tried to deny it, however, the doctor’s report in her hand proved otherwise. He finally broke down telling her the truth, I love you But…..
he was a sex addict, with two different mistresses, one female, and the other male. He also used street whores or strangers he met online. He claimed he always used condoms, yet somehow he got infected. He knew he had the STD and that it was treated, that is also why he has not had sex with her the last few weeks. Though, somehow she contracted it. Probably before he found out himself, he suggested.
They drove in silence, deep in thought as Mary, their 8 year old daughter, played with her doll in the back seat of the classic Oldsmobile. 12 years of marriage down the drain. She wondered if she was wrong, what she could have done differently.
They were driving north on Hwy 321 out of Fort Paine Alabama, heading to Knoxville Tennessee. Carol and Mary were going to stay with her mother while they got a divorce. She was mad, scared and at a complete lost as to what to do next. She thought about killing herself, however, Mary made that a dumb idea. She wanted to scream, she wanted to kill her husband, she wanted to die.
The front driver’s side tire blew, the cheater slammed on the brakes, slowing the big blue Bro-Ham down as he pulled over to the shoulder. Shit
the man said. His short blond hair wet with sweat from heat and fear. When they stopped, he looked at her, I never fixed the spare tire
She was so mad, she told him to get it fixed before they left. She was realizing that he was not as together as she once thought. He was a mess. How did I ever fall in love with him in the first place
she wondered. He got out of the car as a wrecker pulled over in front of them. He waved at the two guys who got out of the tow truck.
Flat tire and I don’t have a spare
Carl told them.
Nice car, what year?
the large mechanic, Dave, asked.
’62
the proud car owner smiled, restored it myself
he lied, he bought beer and coke as his friends did the work while he watched.
You want to sell it?
Dave asked.
No way man ain’t happening, sorry
the car owner said shaking his head.
Dave looked at the man, then at the pretty little blond sitting in the front seat, then at the child in the back, to bad
he half smiled at the cheating husband, I have a shop, I don’t have any new tires that would fit, but I should have a used one that will work. It would be $25 for the tow plus $20 more for the tire and mounting
Ok
Carl replied, happy to get it fix so quick.
They hooked up the car. Carl and the other guy rode on the back of the wrecker as Dave, Carol and Mary rode in the front. Carol thanked the driver trying to make small talk, though he was not very talkative. He was struggling with feelings he never had before. He was raised in the northern part of Alabama were it was hard to live. Most people were poor, many either made shine or grew pot or both to survive. Many would of and have killed to keep family secrets. His father was killed by a group of rednecks for running shine through their county. Part of a feud that had been going on for forty years that would still be going, if Dave and his kin hadn’t killed most of the clan.
Now Dave ran shine in two counties, while growing pot in the Devil’s Range, between the two. He was making money, he had enough money to buy dozens of cars like the one he had in tow. He looked sideways at the little girl, thinking about his four year old daughter. His little girl would never be this cute, her fat face at a young age told of the ugliness to come, though he still loved her. He never had a problem with killing, until she was born. Then something strange happened, he started growing a conscious.
A psychopath with a heart?
he mused.
They pulled into a driveway that cut through some trees hiding a ramshackle house, with three sheds that were used as workshops. Several cars, trucks and vans were parked about the place, some looking brand new, while the others were in various stages of deterioration. Chickens fled from the path of the truck as it pulled up to the main house.
Carl jumped from the back going towards the cab, when Dave’s cousin, Shelby, came behind knocking him out with a hammer. Carol saw her husband fall, then the vulgar man holding a bloody hammer smiled wickedly at her in the side view mirror. She turned to Dave who smashed her in the face with the back of his hand. She was knocked out cold.
She opened her eyes as best as she could, her face was in pain and swollen. Her husband was naked, doing some kind of dance. It was dark, except for the moon and stars that lit the early evening sky. She thought of Mary so she called out for her.
Carl came Can you walk?
he asked panting heavily.
Where is Mary?
she cried, still not understanding what was happening.
Carl got the child that was hiding in some bushes bringing her to her mother. Carol grabbed the naked child, searching for cuts, she had none. When a growl broke her attention. She looked at Carl that was still doing his crazy dance, she realized he was waving a tree branch at some dogs. She looked into the dark making out several dogs, some looked like wolves, while most looked like regular mutts except they acted like wolves. They were attacking Carl, rushing him when the branch broke, he fell back. He screamed as the flesh was ripped from bone. The pain from one bite forgotten by the pain of the next bite. The wild dogs continued to shred the man apart after he stopped screaming, Carol watched in shock at the horror. Until the dogs looked at her.
She was naked as well, she could feel that she had been raped while unconscious. There was a chill in the air that autumn brings, though she was not thinking about any of it. She clutched her child, slowly walked backwards as the dogs approached. The lead dog was a Rottweiler, evil looking as hell, the second one was part wolf that almost looked sad as he followed the alpha’s commands. She cleared a thicket of trees, then started running as the dogs gave chase. One clamped on her right butt cheek causing her to fall forward, the dog rolled over her letting out a yelp when he crashed into a tree stump, its left eye being gouged out by a broken branch. She was up and running again as two more deadly animals attacked, one got her left shoulder, as the other went for the child. The bitch had Mary by the head, she jerked down killing the little girl instantly.
As her child was ripped from her hands, she turned to fight. Her baby daughter was being ripped apart by the hoard like she was a rag. Carol saw a long bone lying on the ground in a sliver of light that she picked it up. She began swinging the leg bone, from an earlier victim, smashing the evil dogs where ever she could hit them. She tried to climb up a tree, never seeing the old alpha dog come from behind her snapping her neck. She died instantly being spared the misery of being shredded alive by the pack that was all over her.
CHAPTER 2
Two weeks later……
Tary Noland sat in the front seat of his van staring at the Northern Alabama sky. The billons of stars sparkled in the moonless night as he slowly exhaled the pot smoke from his lungs. He had been mostly hiking since leaving Jackson County two months ago. Being alone was better than dealing with people. He made a vow to himself to never get involved with locals again
again. He had only been in love once before Samantha, now he knew he never could be again. He has found several good rocks on his hikes, now he needed to start selling, for he was low on funds. It was Thursday so he decided to camp out tonight then head into Fort Paine in the morning.
He was hiking in the northern Alabama Mountains when he read about the Devil’s Range. He remembered the legend of Diablo’s Vein in the Miller’s Range in SW New Mexico. He searched for the legendary silver lode for a month, although he had found many rocks he hoped were silver, they turned out to be sex rocks
or just another fucking rock. He wondered if the Devil’s Range held any such secrets, he would have asked someone if he wanted to talk to people.
Most of the time he thought about Sam, now the pain of her memory was starting to hurt more than forgetting about her. He was ready to move forward though he was finding it hard. The tears formed in his eyes again.
Lost in his pain he did not hear the wrecker stop out on the road. He did not notice the two guys walking towards the black Chevy van. When a redneck stuck his head into the driver’s window, Tary looked at him swinging out of instinct. The man stumbled backwards as Tary jumped to the back.
Shelby seen the van enter the desolate side road that morning, he remembered they needed parts for a customer that was rebuilding one of his own. A classic ‘67 although this one was not in great shape, it had the parts they needed. Besides he did not like hippies, even though this guy had short blond hair, he could tell he was a hippy. He told Dave about it, who gave him the go ahead.
So Shelby and Earl his twin brother got the wrecker then went back, the van was still there, however, the hippy was gone. So they left to come back later that night. The van was still there now they could tell that someone was in it, sitting in the front seat smoking. As they crept up to the van, Shelby got a bad feeling. His brother went to the left side while he went right. He heard Earl cussing when he was hit in the face then saw the man jump into the back. He swung open the side door as the man inside froze, his hand reaching for something. Shelby dove in on him smashing the hippy to the inside wall of the van. Tary was startled at the rednecks quickness so he did not have time to maneuver out of the way. Shelby grabbed him by the hair yanking him out then threw him to the ground. Tary shot up quickly facing his attacker, in the little light he had he saw a heavy solid man with few weak points, he decided to go for the knees. He changed his stance, Shelby rushed as he looked into the drifter’s eyes then felt as though he just fucked up. The man kicked at his knees, however Earl smashed the hippy in the back of head with a monkey wrench, before he made contact with the redneck in front of him.
The blond man fell at his feet as if dead, Shelby pulled out his knife. He reached down grabbing a handful of hair again, the knife ready to slit the throat when Earl asked, wha you doin?
We need to kill him?
he said it as a statement though it sounded like a question.
Naw let the dogs have him, they need to eat too.
Earl chided him.
Shelby was scared, he did not know why, everything in him said to kill this man quickly. Something about the eyes. They have seen evil, they had become evil. He felt as if he had been cursed by those eyes, now marked for death. He did not pull the knife across the artery. His mistake.
They tied the feet and hands then put the guy back into the van. Hooked the van to the wrecker then headed home. When they got there they threw the bound man in the back of a 4whell drive ‘87 ford 150 then took him out to Devil’s Range where discharged their load. They stripped him out of his clothes leaving him unconscious, naked and untied. Shelby still wanted to kill him, Earl explained.
if they find the body, it can’t have any marks on them, except for the dogs or it will cause an investigation.
for over a forty years his clan had been robbing people like this. Naked in the woods with wild dogs was a good way to get rid of evidence, they ate most of the bones. None have ever escaped. It was a perfect plan every time. Shelby wasn’t so sure this time. Then they headed back home.
Dave stood on the so called porch of his hillbilly home, when his cousins pulled in with the black van, it was a piece of shit, and Dave shook his head in disbelief. He was going through the contents when Shelby and Earl returned.
Any problems?
Dave asked.
None, easy as pie
Earl exclaimed.
Dave looked at Shelby, who just shook his head. He wondered why he looked funny he was about to ask, what was up? When Earl asked anything good?
Rocks
Dave held one out for them to see.
What kind of rock is that?
Earl had never seen a Potoski stone.
Hell if I know
Dave said as he threw the rock back into the box he pulled it out of. It’s the wrong model van as well, it’s a short bed Chevy. We need a long bed GMC.
he looked at Shelby, you got the wrong van, with a bunch worthless rocks. Good going dumb ass.
Wait,
Earl had climbed in searching through the boxes, he pulled a smaller plastic box out, this one say’s ‘Rubies’ and this one here is marked
Aqua Marine"
Dave reached as Earl handed them to him, he opened one, there were about thirty red rubies coated in a green mineral. A paper inside read African Ruby in Zoisite. Pigeon Blood.
now the load was interesting so they drove the van to one of the sheds to unloaded it looking at the many different types of rocks as they did. A lone wolf howled deep
