    CHAPTER l OVE

It’s spring in Georgia and the sun touches every inch of God’s creation with no limits. You can hear the birds singing to the wind and white clouds swimming in the blue sky above. A swing set sways back and forth in a grassy yard. With the rusty bolt snares sounding to any ears that were patient enough to listen. Warm but not hot, breezy but not cold, a perfect day if you were looking for spring’s ideal climate conditions. A dirt road wore down to the gravel with trees and grass crowding the outsides of it. Leading to a white and yellow house off into the distance with no other homes or residency, it seemed peaceful. Faded paint chipped but cleaned windows and a fresh door with fresh yellow paint, it was an old home. It was a home that had seen its better days but kept up in fair condition with minor upgrades. The glimmer and shine of a brand- new gold door knocker pressed to the front of the yellow door spoke volumes about the house.

This home had been lived in for years and passed down through generations. The mail box was a ten-minute walk up the dirt road. 401 was plastered on its front with the Rose’s covered on its sides. Diamond Rose was the sole owner of this place handed down from generations. Ms. Rose was nearly twenty-five with a daughter just about eight years of age. Diamond once had responsible parents who made their living the honest way. Hard workers are what she had been told by locals in town. A rainy day would end the both of their lives in a car wreck leaving Diamond alone. The words spoken to Diamond from locals were never pleasant or even inviting to her ear. Lectures of how to live and how not to go about her business were her routine run-ins of conversation by locals. She had a child very young and was frowned upon everywhere she went. No ring on her finger, but a deep notch on many locals’ belts while becoming the fantasy of many local husbands and despised by their wives. A simple drive to the market would have

her stopped by one of her mom’s older friends and a long speech about being a clean woman.

The challenge of privacy and her personal life was exposed with one look at her daughter where ever they went out. A young mother trying to make it on her own and now the story begins.

Diamond was what most in town would say a loose woman. Loose meaning free willed, loose meaning easy, loose meaning she cared less about what anyone else felt or said about her at any time. The local’s frowns bounced off her ego like a rubber ball kissing a gym floor at full force. Diamond had green eyes, curly brown hair that looked like curly fries outside a takeout window, and brown skin smoother than a baby’s butt. A smile made of gems, but an attitude stiffer then a ninety-year-old man frustrated at the world. She was uneducated, very stubborn, and absolutely hated that she had a daughter to take care of. Her daughter’s little hands and tiny body was just a reminder of her own imperfections, but she made due. Each time the sun would raise, the struggles started up again in her eyes. The only positive in her life is that the house they lived in had no mortgage and no debt. Life was about numbers and money constantly with Diamond. Love was an annoyance and patience are a distraction that her financial situation couldn’t afford. She was desperate for a way out of Augusta, the city life is always on her mind and country living wasn’t enough. A drive into town with her little one meant strapping tight into an old beat up station wagon with rusty hubcaps. Diamond would make a silent prayer to herself each time she pressed the key into the ignition just so the old heap of junk would start up. The clank of the engine could be heard before seen each time they would park. Every turn had a loud cry from the brakes sticking. The thick white smoke covered the back end of the car as if clouds were strapped to the back end of the pipes permanently. The station wagon stops, but Diamond still carries a demeanor like her car is perfect and made of gold. She rushes her daughter to catch up as she walks to the door. With jean shorts cut to the pockets and blue panties showing with every step she made, Diamond was comfortable. A low cut, white t-shirt cut down the middle

showing off her c-cups with no bra on; she looked like anything but a mother. Strange couples

entering the store just for their monthly groceries are at awe. Women shield their spouse’s eyes as Diamond smiles and waves. Her body fit and firm steels the eyes of their men with only seconds. She has the attention of at least seven men in the parking lot all with girlfriends or wives. It’s the invitation of sex and the visual exposure to an exotic woman, walking only steps from these men that paralyzes their movement.

Hand gestures and head rubbing signaled the obvious interest of Diamond from these men. The attention was immediate and constant everywhere Diamond went. Entering the store, young boys bagging groceries stumbled over bags and looked at her. Cashiers frowned in disgust as they were instantly reminded of their own flaws. Woman to woman an object to a piece of meat and each woman in the store instantly felt naked just with a glance. Strangers would find themselves knowing her body with nothing left to the imagination. A woman walking passed her fixes her shirt looks at herself in the reflection of metal anywhere close to her. Diamond rolled her eyes and snatched her daughters’ hand because her pace was too slow. The essentials where necessary in every visit to the grocery store getting the twenty pack of condoms, Vaseline, lotion, cereal, some eggs, and milk. The quick strut from aisle to aisle to grab her groceries were closely watched by the men and women in the store. A man mopping aisle three drops his mop head and swallows his gum as the store manager making his rounds drops his clip board to get a clear view of her butt. Two women working the register watch her close jealous of her body, but disgusted that she is a mother looking the way she does. It’s the usual for Diamond to come to the store for these items so she doesn’t even break stride pushing her items into her basket quickly. One of the stock boys even rearranges Vaseline to the very bottom of the shelf just to catch her butt sticking up as she must reach for it. Wishful thinking for such a young boy at only fifteen, but this would be the highlight of his day and very close to being the highlight of his month. Diamond wasn’t

blind to the little tricks men would use to get her attention or even to get a second look at her, but

if they looked or seemed like they didn’t have money she wasn’t interested. The work of a stock boy in a grocery story was honest work but she had no interest to hold the crown holding the arm of a grocery stock boy by all means. She strutted and swayed, grasping all her items walking to the register. Aisle seven instantly closed right as she set her basket down as the cashier women looked dead into her face. A stern look into the cashier’s eyes and then a slight roll cued her exit to one aisle and into the next lane to check out. Once again, the cashier women closed her lane and sternly looked into her eyes as if her business wasn’t welcomed there at all. Diamond looked deep at the women as the cashier just turned her back and leaned on the register as if Diamond was completely invisible. A gasp of air and the fiddle of the cashier’s fingers only angered Diamond, but still no real reaction. Diamond slammed her hand on the items belt directly next to the cashier. Releasing her daughters hand Diamond squared her body up towards the cashier waiting for her attention to move towards her and then another customer came up. The cashier turned and centered her attention to the new customer and still ignored Diamond completely pushing her basket down the items belt, so the new customer could fit her items. Excuse me, Diamond said with fury and rage in her voice and frustration. It was bread, fruit, eggs and more passed by ringing item after item up from the new customer, as the cashier continued to ignore her.

A fire could have broken out right in line and this cashier wouldn’t have spit on Diamond to keep her alive, but only to keep the fire from burning the grocery store down. The bag boy looked uncomfortable like an elephant on a swing set, an elephant at a drive thru window, just the elephant in the room. Excuse me, are you ready to check out? the boy said. She needs to leave because I’m not ringing her nasty self out at all! The cashier spoke to the boy looking directly at Diamond almost daring her to do something. An awkward silence infested the store as

the grip of flesh to fingers touched on Diamonds fist. The boy backed up fearing what would

happen if he were to even look to be involved with the dispute. Diamonds open left hand slightly pushed the chest of her daughter back a few inches. Her daughter stepped back pushing the items her mother had placed on the purchasing belt a few inches back. A slow bead of sweat rolled off the boy’s face anticipating violence. The manager walked from the back and on past aisle seven in the distance from the actual situation. The stock boy from earlier who lowered some items to get a peak at Diamonds butt also came from around the aisle to see what was going on. Only a few customers were shopping at the time. It was almost epic that even an innocent bystander would have front row seats to what was going to happen next. Cashiers from the other respected lanes stopped what they were doing and focused on exactly what was happening. Diamonds fist balled up and her bottom lip curled, and forehead wrinkled. Disrespectful gestures from this cocky, but rude cashier had been taken to its full limits by Diamond. Was it just a bad day for this cashier or was it just a lack of humility for her fellow woman? No matter what the excuses were, it was at a boiling point so quickly for Diamond. A nasty look here, a roll of an eye there, had been enough for Diamond. I’m going to ask you one last time to ring up my items lady, Diamond said. Her request was patient and calm with bottled anger deep below the words floating out of her mouth. Tension could be pushed from out your face with a swat of a hand.

Sliced with a butter knife, tension could be moved from out your personal space. The cashier turned her back to Diamond yet again and picked up her nail filer and said, I can’t even hear trash speak to me.

Wind seemed like it blew within the store and a dark cloud covered the inner walls of the grocery store. There was a storm coming, but no weather report could be given for such a cold chill overwhelming this cashier’s station. A short lift of the cashier’s nail filler and her eyes dropped to her finger tip. The boy lowered his head wishing for peace in his mind, but his wish

would not be granted to say the least. A wide hand would shadow the left side of the cashier’s

face and she turned to it slowly. The shadow could be nothing more than devastation touching the cheek of the cashier’s rude demeanor. Loud but a low-pitched sound erupted in the store with a flesh to flesh contact from Diamond. Diamond smacked her with her left hand with a force unequal to any other woman. Powerful forces such as this would have been more common coming from a grown man, but the pressure and force was coming from the hands of Diamond. One powerful blow to the cashier’s face had the attention of the entire store instantly, more than before. The cashier dropped her nail filler and a small symphony was playing their favorite tunes in her ear drums. The left side of her face jerked quickly to the right and her neck bent down as a flow of blood ran down her nose causing her eyes to water. If there were a time to show your complete compassion or kindness to Diamond, this wouldn’t prove to be a good time at all.

Diamond allowed no time for the cashier to gather herself even though after one blow the cashier was dazed. The cashier’s palms covered her face as the blood dropped to her individual life lines on her palms. A slight turn from the cashier offered no sympathy from Diamonds hands, as a swift fist met the cashiers chin equally powerful as her hand but loosening the cashier’s lower tooth. Thoroughly grasping the cashier’s hair with Diamonds left hand she forced her fist into the cashier’s eyes once, twice and again. The boy who was just a simple witness and a normal bag boy had ring side seats for a horrible beating of this cashier. Diamonds clinch of a full fist of the cashier’s hair would jerk her neck back and lift her right off her feet and over the counter top.

Her co-workers stood in shock unable to move fast enough towards their heavily battered worker. The stock boy walked closer mimicking the movements of Diamonds fist, as if he was dishing out the blow by blow report of the fight. The manager shuffled towards the dramatics with a slow skip of his feet shocked like the others in the store. No, no stop it please! It was the voice of reason that hung on deaf ears as Diamond pulverized the cashier’s face as she was flung

to the floor. The strength of this woman was totally unexpected, but it was clear Diamond could

fight enough to hold her own. The bag boy rushed to the cashier’s aid and wrapped his arms around Diamond. Struggling and wiggling her legs and arms; it wasn’t easy to restrain her advances. The poor cashier was lying on the floor crying and gasping for air. Hit by a locomotive or even tons of bricks crashing to her face and head could have been a dead-on comparison to how the cashiers face looked. An allergic reaction by a swarm of honey bees or even an attack of hard lumber wood could have also been a safe description of the rude cashier’s face. Whatever mental destruction that Diamond had caused this woman couldn’t be seen, but there were plenty physical blemishes to her original facial structure that would give her first place honors at any Halloween costume party. Get her off of me! Make it stop! Make it stop! the cashier screamed. A slow crawl on the floor of the store with a whimpering voice of fear blurting out to whoever would listen to the cashier’s cries was her only defense. Staggering up with one hand and the other over her face than falling back down; she was hurt badly. Her quivering lips shook, and tears rolled down her face so fast. Swelling increased as she struggled to pick herself off the floor. The manager finally at the scene limping towards the station where all the fighting had taken place aided the rescue of his worker. Much too late he still applied some comfort to his worker helping her off the floor. You get away from me, you whore! Get away! said the cashier. The manager helping her off the cold floor of the grocery store shielding Diamond away with his

back fearing that the fight would continue. You whore, you whore you’re nothing but a whore! Diamond broke free of the bag boys’ arms and socked the cashier in the face two more times.

One punch and then another violent second punch thrusted into her face caving her naval cavity to the point it was almost unbearable to see without a wince of your eye. The manager tried to shield the blows from this woman, but there was no stopping it. Focus boiled all over Diamond’s face to let loose on the disrespectful cashier, but now she was unable to continue to

batter the woman with the bag boy and the manager holding her back. Two more blows received

from Diamond and now the cashier eyes quickly closed. Raw meat from off the produce line or the frozen food section had grown two legs and shed tears it seemed. The stock boy was close to the station and once was playful and excited to see such action on shift, but now was worried. Up close and personal to the scene by scene play by play of the fight now he could see up and close how bad it got. The stock boys’ mouth dropped, and arms crossed after one good look at his co- worker’s face. The swelling grew within seconds of the aftermath of the fight growing bigger than soft balls on the cashier’s face. Hey, you take her to the back now! the manager said.

Anger was in his voice as he struggled to hold Diamond back. Ma’am, please stop or I’ll be forced to call the authorities. The eye contact received from the manager to Diamond offered no calming remedy to the situation. A clinch to her bicep and a pull of her shoulders told a story on its own. Diamonds shirt lowered a bit as the manager gripped her tight as an attempt to calm her down. Her breast slightly exposed, but not enough to show anything more but her bra offered a quick distraction and the mangers eyes lowered. The bag boy released Diamond and her struggle lightened once she saw the managers eyes lower to the crease of her breast. Ma’am calm down. Please calm down, said the bag boy. Diamond’s rage simmered, and she continued to make eye contact with the manager hearing the boy speak, but not listening to his words. It was over at this point and her hands unclenched from her war like posture and she relaxed
