What is an Educational Environment?
Education Reform. We hear this term a lot, but what does it actually mean? There is a general understanding that it is an effort to improve the educational system. However, to truly define what improvement is needed, we need to first define the problem. As a current student in the American public education system, I have a unique perspective, one that often overlooked in this debate. In my opinion one of the serious problems is the environment of education.
The educational environment is often over looked because it is not something that is necessarily dictated by government policy, although that does influence it, but something that is largely controlled by individual schools. While that makes it a little different for every school it also makes it easier to fix. With larger changes in education there is only so much an individual can do, you can vote, share your opinion, lobby, or even run for office, but the change is still a long arduous process. An individual, however, could completely change the environment of education at a school and change the lives of every student there. This is a change that everyone can make in their community.
In this book we are going to look at some of the things that affect the educational environment and how you can make a positive change. Not all of these problems can be completely fixed on a small scale, but you can change how they are affecting the students. We will go over the five main causes of an unhealthy educational environment and what can be done to change them. This is a book for the students, teachers, parents, and community members who want to improve public school because our future is in the hands of the education system.
Educational Inflation
Inflation is an economic term describing a rise in prices due to the value of currency lowering. This occurs naturally and when it happens at a slow enough rate is not necessarily a terrible thing. In 1968, a loaf of bread costed about 22 cents, today a loaf of bread costs around $1.50. In 1968 minimum wage was $1.60, today minimum wage is $9.25¹. As you can see this example of inflation is not necessarily harmful. In other cases, however, inflation can happen at extreme rates. In post WWI Germany, inflation became so bad that in 1923
