Preface
When I was a child, it warmed my heart when I told everyone I’m going to become a Doctor! I’m going to be the Best Psychiatrist! Im going to be the next biggest Scientist! It was amazing to hear the accolades, the presumptive perks, insurmountable praise & unrealistic salary figures that my well wishing parents & extended family members harped about everyday. I measured becoming a doctor to having near perfect grades and a know it all persona— as you can see, I was clearly not ready for this world we live in called 2015. I envisioned having all my friends that I made in Elementary to play Sega Genesis together, to dine together, to be respected together and all become successful together. I equated doing well in school the same as being a good human being as long I didn’t harm anyone and I didn’t cause mischief for myself. As I grew into middle school, I learnt that doing well had its price, your friends will change and the need to camouflage was far more important than being a maverick. And so life starts — you wander through endless years of schooling, forming friends in the process and learn to deal with loss.
Unfortunately, reality is very different from what we want and those who love us want. As you grow into adolescence and then college picking time, the end product of every profession and all the perks associated with it, appeal to your opiate state of mind. Whether you are forming a clique, building a brotherhood that you believe will last forever, or you are striving for perfect grades, hoping to make millions— it is all within this time period that life shapes what we do and who we become. It is precisely during these years that our sense of who we think we are develop, and consequently so, what social class we belong to, what we think we should
