Indecent Proposal
February was cold. The raining month. She was hurrying back home from work. A car passed by, raising water drops from the asphalt. She silently looked at the machine and the man in it. She wondered what the man was chasing after. People sometimes identify with the machines, and the machines acquire some human characteristics. She always had a lot of muddled thoughts in her head, one after another, without any control and order. Sometimes she would think about the very thoughts. She often wondered if she could control them. And before realizing that thoughts are a powerful weapon, she unconsciously caused the events that would change her life forever.
Rushing into her apartment, she took her clothes off, trying to get into the shower and wash away all the bad things she saw and heard that day. Her body wrapped in a soft bathrobe, she went out of the bathroom and wrapped her hair in a towel in the same color, gathering long, wet, black curls as the water she squeezed was running down her skin. She went into the living room and looked at the table with the envelope with unpaid bills.
The phone rang. The number on the display was not a familiar one. She answered the phone in an official voice that she did not like, as it reminded her of traces of manliness in the female psyche. It was the voice for strangers. On the other end of the line she heard a voice, soft, strange, attractive and dangerous at the same time.
Is this Dunia, the physiotherapist?
She had no doubt that the man was not from her town, she sensed that lovely, savory Sarajevo accent.
Yes, it’s me, and you are?
Miroslav Dedic.
May I come for treatment?
Do you have any health issues? Blood pressure, surgeries.
No, I don’t. I just want a good relaxation massage.
Yes, all right.
Shortly after, he appeared on the door. Tall, handsome, well-dressed. She guessed he was over fifty-five. His grey hair was neatly trimmed. He was casually dressed and as his body was firm, she guessed he exercised or engaged in sports for recreation. Maybe tennis. He had a handsome face, his eyes were somewhat small and his eyeballs were not prominent, indicating he was an insightful and intuitive man that deserved to be told only the truth. His nose somehow reminded her of a bird of prey a hawk or an eagle. She wasn’t sure whether to classify him among hawks or eagles. What made him handsome were his lips. Thin, indicating his character of an unscrupulous man and the man who liked and enjoyed erotic passion. Dunia let her client in and closed the door. She was looking at his back reflecting the attitude of a gentleman. He took his clothes off, looking her straight in the eye through his expensive glasses. He took off his expensive watch and put it down. She felt uneasy, as the target of the scorpions.
She looked at him and asked:
Which is your Zodiac sign?
Scorpio.
I knew it.
How?
Just like that.I wouldn’t explain any further.
As he was lying on the bed, he murmured. Dunia turned around, not wanting to ask him to repeat what he had said.
Where do you feel the pain, Mr. Dedic?
Why don’t you call me Miroslav?
No, I can’t. At least for now.
Her fingers were sliding down his skin, he was shivering and she could hear the muffled screams. At one moment she thought of stopping the massage, but she silently continued.
He turned around, letting her touch him, her fingers were sliding across his muscles and his body was trembling more and more. At one moment, she firmly held his leg and asked him
What’s this all about? Are you sick? Tell me.
No, I’m not and I don’t know what’s happening.
Dunia was calm and she knew that her touch could induce different sensations. Many people reacted by maundering, and this was obviously another such example.
Get dressed!
May I have a longer massage, I’ll pay extra?
No. I complied with the procedure.
Days passed by, his calls became more frequent, his visits more certain, he started leaving conferences, important meetings because of massage.
Several days later, as she was finishing the massage, Dunia looked at him. He wanted to say something.
She rushed to ask him if he was satisfied with what she did professionally.
Are you satisfied with the massage? Are there any problems?
No, I just wanted to ask you?!
Yes. tell me?
Could I have a more intimate massage?
Dunia was not surprised by his question. She laughed inside. She decided to have some fun.
What do you mean?
Well, you know, I need the massages, can I pay you and that’s it? You know, I would pay, no strings attached.
Really? Is there anything else you want?
No. That would be it, think about it.
I don’t need to think, I know the answer.
So, tell me, could you give it to me?
No. I couldn’t. And I wouldn’t.
Won’t you even think about it?
I told you that I’ve thought about it.
He left, disappearing in the darkness of the hallway. Dunia closed the door and returned to reality, to her life full of trouble, chronic lack of money, disputes with the landlords. She tried to get her life back on track, but she couldn’t, as she had no help. People she turned to for help wanted something in return
. She’s been having problems with men all her life, and she has been avoiding them. There was something inside of her that attracted them like dogs chasing a bitch during the mating season. Those men were different, blond, dark-haired, older, younger. They would court her,
