    Chapter 1

    Aria

The cage gently rocks from the awning of the rare commodities shop. I grasp the cold metal bars with pale, slender fingers. The sun shines brightly, so I squint my eyes to see better.

I tuck my wings around my narrow frame, hoping for some protection from the oglers. Men that have come to inspect the wares.

I see the wolf-shifter approach. He walks hunched forward and swaying from side to side, inspecting the many shops and their items.

He has dark, unkempt hair. He seems slathered in filth from his latest hunt. He holds some skinned animal over his shoulder.

I notice his gaze move in my direction. Dark eyes peer within the confines of my cage. He stops moving as if pausing to study my presence.

Nervously, I shudder and try to cover my naked form better with my wings. My legs and bottom are still exposed, but at least I can cover the most important bits.

The wolf begins to approach the shop. There’s so much noise and clatter from the oncoming crowd, the hustle and bustle of the street fair, I cannot make out the words spoken between this shifter and the shop owner.

The hideous ogre, who owns the store, seems pleased as he unlocks the small barred door. Out of instinct, I quickly shove myself over to the other end, with my back pressed against the confining metal. He still manages to grab hold of a foot and yank me out.

I try to grab the bars on the opposite side of the cage, but with one mighty tug, I am torn through the narrow opening and presented to the curious wolf-shifter.

I stand, trembling. My head bowed forward, nervous to meet that penetrating stare. I hear his deep baritone voice for the first time. He sounds as fearsome as he looks, but there’s also a warmth to his voice.

I realize things could be worse. I will happily follow this stranger as long as he takes me far away from here. There are worse creatures that could have taken an interest and purchased me as their lowly domestic pet.

I feel a leash attached to the metal collar looped around my neck, and then a gentler than usual tug. I gladly follow my new master from the market.

I try to keep my body covered by my wings as men leer. Women notice me with scorn. I want to make my way closer to the wolf, hoping to find comfort under his fierce protection. My shoulder bumps his hip. My proportions are much smaller than the large beast.

He turns as if noticing me for the first time. He then quickly grabs hold of me. I shriek and flail as I find myself confused by his actions, panicking over what punishment I will endure.

But I quickly settle down as I realize he merely wishes to carry me in his arms. Maybe I was not walking swiftly enough for his liking. I know the shopkeeper never liked dawdling. My smaller stature and more delicate disposition have not prepared me to be quick nor strong.

The wolf continues to look ahead, and I feel secure in his arms. He begins to casually stroke my long pale hair as he continues onward. I nuzzle my face against the warmth of his chiseled chest. I wish I could absorb his strength and security.

He stops, and then I can feel his weight shift and the sound of a door being kicked open. The sounds from the street fall away as the door is slammed shut behind us.

I am set down on the floor before my new master. He observes me as he locks the door behind him and places the key back in a pocket of his trousers. His chest is bare and tanned from his time out in the sun.

Then he simply strides past me, leaving me by the front door, unsure what exactly will be expected from me. I am not strong nor quick to attend to chores around the house. I am not quite sure what type of service I can offer the wolf.

He disappears into another back room. The pungent smell of meat roasting soon assaults my nostrils.

I simply decide to kneel on the floor and wait by the front entrance. I haven’t been given permission to come forward and join my master.

The wolf reenters with a plate of meat and bread as well as a bag I recognize as birdseed. It’s the same food offered to me at the store. I would prefer whole fruits and nuts. Something more substantial. But I mustn’t complain. I need the sustenance in whatever form my master provides.

He rests upon the massive but simple wooden chair with his meal. Then he looks over toward me and whistles, scattering some birdseed on the floor at his feet.

I dutifully make my way toward him. I cross the room and then stand before him. I wait patiently for permission to eat. I do not wish to offend my new master by making any false assumptions.

The shifter raises a brow as he peers down at me. Suddenly, he snatches my chin in his massive grip. I begin to tremble apprehensively as I try to keep my eyes directed toward the floor.

What’s wrong with you, little creature? I hope you’re not defective, for I would hate to return you to that ogre. That shop does not seem to be an appropriate place for a fair creature such as yourself.

I chance a look up at him, surprised by the kind sentiment. His eyes seem to shine with a glimmer of tenderness. I feel my body relax some as I release the breath I was holding.

He continues, Can you eat? Do you understand me?

I slowly nod my head, and he releases my chin. I come down to my knees, and I begin to pick up small handfuls of seeds with my fingers and place them in my mouth. They are a bit dirty from the floor, but I do not mind. The flooring in this house is better kept than the ogre’s abode.

I feel a hand graze my back and wings, and I know I have made my master happy. I smile, pleased. I don’t want to be returned to that nasty ogre’s shop.

I quickly finish my meal. There wasn’t much to eat, so I lean against my master’s massive leg under the table. He doesn’t seem to mind as he polishes off his food.

I then sense him shuffling and gathering up his plate to clean up in the kitchen. He comes back and places a bowl of water in front of me to drink as he gulps down a large glass of water for himself.

I lift the bowl to my lips and take a sip as I lift my eyes to study this massive male. I should be fearful of him. But I like that he’s a shifter with a similar animal nature like myself. I am from the birdfolk. I don’t morph into an animal at whim like a shifter. I simply have human and bird-like qualities.

Humans have become extinct. They evolved into many various species with more profound abilities to survive. We probably adapted to flourish and assimilate in the natural world. Humans became too destructive of the earth, so we were forced to evolve.

Those without genetic enhancements died from disease and natural disasters, but mostly plagues that swept the land.

Since then, other creatures have also come to inhabit the earth, and many from this planet have traveled to other solar systems. There are now intergalactic treaties in place to keep harmony between the many species.

The wolf peers down at me to see that I have finished my water, and then I am scooped back up in his embrace. I don’t mind, for he makes me feel safe. It’s much better than being hung from a cage for everyone to gawk at.

He carries me to another room. As we enter, I realize it’s a bedroom. There is a massive bed in the center. It seems to take up most of the space. There is also a dresser and a closet. But mostly an enormous bed.

You could probably fit ten of me to sleep comfortably on that bed, but maybe just two wolf-shifters, I contemplate.

Suddenly, I am dropped on the bed. I look up to my master, confused. It’s the middle of the day, not time to sleep. Also, the bed was obviously designed for him. I look about, wondering where my birdcage may be.

Then he begins to strip off his pants as he watches me. I am surprised. Maybe he is getting ready for bed. For all I know, he had a busy day before he collected me, and he desires a midday nap.

But the wolf’s steadily watching me, and then he’s climbing onto the bed, towering over me, his arms like two giant tree trunks on either side of me. Peering down the length of him, I can see his large member standing upright.

His face hovers over my own. I view the creases over his brow and the unshaven scruff along his jawline. He surprises me, and our lips connect.

His tongue dives into my mouth, and I feel an explosion course through me. A warm, tingling sensation spreads through my body and limbs.

I find myself grasping his hair as I return the kiss. I have never done anything like this before. But these new sensations are much better than being sold off to some alien species to use in whatever capacity they see fit, taken across the galaxy, far from home. At least, I found myself with an earthling.
