CHAPTER ONE
The Book
Vaster examined the tall, pale skinned Atlantian at the helm through the crack of the deck door. He gritted his teeth and furrowed at the anomalies oversized grip on the wooden handles. Acantha stood on the quarter deck, hands on her hips with a crease in her forehead as she stared out toward their destination.
Vaster released a heavy breath, dark circles still rested beneath the captain’s eyes. She appeared more put together, despite the unnatural choice of the red vest. Her matted black hair was finally brushed and bushing out beneath her hat. Despite all of her efforts to set things back to normal, her stoic face didn’t hide the struggle he knew was raging inside her. They were vulnerable.
Vaster puffed out his chest, he needed to help. Anxiously he shut the door quickly, his eyes flit down the shadowed stairs of The Dark Eve and then to the crew’s quarters door to his left. He had to find answers for her. A glimpse of movement from the bottom of the darkened staircase claimed his attention. A halting feeling drew him to asses if it was just a trick of the eye or another Atlantian. A clanging noise echoed up from the belly of the ship.
He flew through the crews door and slammed it shut, pressing hard against the surface listening for any indication it was coming near.
The spying giants could be anywhere. Vaster cursed under his breath. He didn't understand why Captain trusted them, especially after what their kind did to her family. Determined, he stretched his neck, relaxing his nerves. He shook his shoulders, dismissing the frustrations of having to live with the enemy for an undetermined amount of time, while subsequently remembering the blue sparkling life water they brought extending his life. Huffing at the conundrum, he lifted his head straight scrutinizing the barren room.
Wearily he turned his head and walked away. It was strange having no crew aboard. An empty hammock hung on the furthest wall by the open window. A flood of relief washed over him. He was glad to be back aboard The Dark Eve. He skipped a step over and spared a quick glimpse of the frothing ocean outside before latching it shut, worried that the sea air would ruin his books.
He set to his corner with a proud smile for the small desk Captain gifted him, its surface hardly visible under the piles of books hoarding it and mused on how to organize the chaos while scratching his large belly. The Dark Eve worked less accommodating than the giant library at the catacombs where his books were borrowed. Strumming his brown beard, he imagined the walls and walls of left behind shelved books and his heart sunk just a bit. Then he gulped at the memory of the guarding demon, Beldagar. The monstrous creature with a man locked away inside him was frozen in stone at the entrance, waiting for the tombs treasures to cross the threshold of the garden gates to resurrect him. They were lucky Captain’s lineage allowed her to take from the catacombs.
Vaster placed a full hand on the top of the pile and sucked in a breath, feeling the sway of the ship. He never imagined he could lose his sea legs. The years of being stranded did a lot more damage than he’d thought. His mind flickered to the door, and his feet itched to check on the Captain one more time, but he stopped himself. She was keeping it together. Sort of. He took a moment to remember her breakdown. Shock had filled him from tip to toe seeing her cry, a first in all his forty years of blessed service.
Ha, he chortled inside. He might look forty, but there were secret wrinkles in his face that would never appear now.
He thought back to the Captain again. The truth was confirmed with his guilty heart pounding in his chest. He wanted to file through his books more than check on her.. He wanted to feel normal again. Spending the last seven years in a library stuck on a mountain had changed his routine. Deep down he never imagined them restoring their lives completely after being betrayed. It was more than luck: now they surged toward another adventure. It was destiny. After rolling up his sleeves, he organized the books according to size against the wall.
After picking up the last and largest book, which had encompassed a significant portion of the desk's surface, he glimpsed another book hidden beneath it. Vaster squinted. The strange leather binding had a metal plate in the middle. What's this?
He placed the massive book on the ground and sat in the rickety chair, heftily scooting closer.
He brushed his hand against the metal surface, not remembering this book among his choices for the Captain to heave across the threshold. His mind flashed back on the thrilling moment he realized the Captain could take things from the tombs and not wake the demon. He was still ready to throw every last thing he held and run for his life if it proved to be otherwise.
