    CHAPTER 1

Open the gates now! Aaron shouted, using the vehicle’s loud speaker, his driver’s window closed. Do it or I’m going to ram through!

Jason Aurelius sat in the front seat, hoping keeper on duty would comply. The two of them watched as the gates began to swing inward. Aaron stomped on the accelerator even before they were open all the way. There was a sickening sound of metal scraping metal as they squeezed through the tight space. Aaron continued to race down the dark road, entering the surrounding woods.

Jason Aurelius reached behind his neck and removed the second patch at the base of his skull.

Feel okay? Aaron asked, his eyes glued to the map before him on the red glowing windshield. He reached up and changed the car’s color to brown so it would disappear into the dark of night.

No, but it was past time. Don’t worry, I won’t go mad on you tonight, Jason Aurelius replied, disposing of it in their incinerator.

Sure hope not. See if Herbert can contact Mitchell. Tell him we’re headed back. Don’t use the vehicle’s radio in case we’re being monitored by Elliott’s people. And see if Land Managers can get me a weather forecast. I saw a flash up ahead.

Jason Aurelius tried several times. We’re too far away for Herbert to make a connection. He claims there is interference. I think he said his signal is being jammed, Healer replied, not fully understanding.

Aaron grunted. Just like Elliott. We’ll wait until we get further from Protectorate. Without warning, Aaron swung the car down a gravel road on their left. Rocks and dirt flew up from the back of the vehicle.

Jason Aurelius gripped the console on his left, the handle on the door to his right and braced his feet on the floor. He was almost ready when Aaron made another sharp turn to the right. Almost. His stomach felt queasy. No time to be sick. Frantically he dug through the glove compartment looking for a bag.

Try the console, Aaron said, anticipating his distress.

Is this even a road? Jason Aurelius asked, clutching the handle on his right, again. The brown paper bag was open in his lap if Herbert failed to maintain control.

It had a name on my map. I don’t see any lights behind us like we’re being followed, Aaron remarked, glancing up to check his mirrors.

I’ll get Herbert to try again. Jason Aurelius waited for Herbert to make another attempt. Aaron, I saw a flash. A storm perhaps?

It will give us cover. Aaron began to slow the vehicle to a more normal operating speed. The road seemed to have improved. What does Herbert have to say?

Nothing. But Jason Aurelius failed to tell Aaron of the communication he received from Elliott demanding Enforcer return Third Chair to his Protectorate for the night. I’ll try later. Keep driving.

Are you sure you’re all right?

I don’t seem to have a choice, Jason Aurelius replied, tightlipped. Maybe sitting up front is not what I thought it would be, he muttered to himself.

They rode in silence with Herbert making repeated attempts to gain access to Mitchell’s IG. The lightning increased in frequency, until they were in the middle of a downpour. Aaron slowed the vehicle as they splashed along.

Beautiful night for a trip, Aaron muttered, checking the vehicle’s charge. Land Managers told me they plugged us in while you were talking to Elliott. How was your meeting?

I’d rather not discuss it, Aaron, Jason Aurelius replied, watching the road. Voices were screaming in his head. Elliott was furious that he had left without approval. Third Chair didn’t answer to anyone but Frederick and Raymond. And of course Central. Maybe you should go a little faster.

    Why?

Because we’re being chased, Healer admitted, glancing over his shoulder.

Did you see something? Aaron asked, accelerating to almost thirty miles an hour.

Not yet, but they’re coming, Healer replied, picking up the paper bag, ready for a violent reaction.

Hold on. Aaron made a sharp turn to his left, then sped along at almost thirty-five. Let me know what is being said before they’re right on us, Jason. Aaron had guessed the cover-up.

He’s upset, Enforcer. Forgive us for not making you aware. Elliott demanded he not leave tonight, Herbert said over their implants.

Just let me know if you see something, Jason, Aaron replied, sorry he had been so sharp.

Silence except for the intense storm raging around them. Aaron turned the car again. Jason Aurelius was totally lost. The map on the windshield indicated they were headed South.

They’ve picked us up on their sensors, Aaron. They’re closing.

    How many?

    Two vehicles.

    You’re sure?

I have identified their codes, Herbert replied. Take the road on your left. Their vehicles will have a disadvantage. They are larger than this one. It may be tight going for us. But it’s clear.

I’ve never doubted you before, Lizard, Aaron said, taking the left Herbert had suggested. Tight is right. Branches scraped the already damaged vehicle. Guess I’ll be paying for the repairs, when and if we get home in one piece.

Pull in and shut off the engine, Herbert whispered. Aaron had entered an old driveway, overgrown with weeds and brambles. The others won’t be able to sense us. I scrambled your codes. Quiet now!

Slowly the two larger white vehicles approached, searching for Aaron and Jason Aurelius. Several times they ran off the narrow road into the ditch. Jason Aurelius held his breath and prayed as the others passed behind their vehicle, not noticing them quietly hiding. About fifty feet further down the narrow lane both cars got stuck in the mud up to their axles. Aaron silently backed his car out and headed the way they had originally come. The silent motor made them undetectable.

A little directions here, Herbert, if you would please, Aaron requested.

I’m giving them false readings. It will buy us some time. That’s assuming they ever get unstuck. At the next turn go right. I’m detecting a house about a quarter mile further. It’s not in the best shape, but you could hide the car behind it and wait for the weather to break. There is a long driveway disguised by bushes and trees.

Is anyone living in the house? Aaron asked, eyes on the road and the map before him. Healer appeared upset, gagging into the bag. Aaron reached over to touch him on the left arm. Easy. I’ll pull over as Herbert suggested.

I can’t be sure if it’s occupied, Enforcer. I’ve attempted to reach Mitchell’s IG again. The connection was poor. We appear close to his service area. There’s the driveway.

It looks like a light in the distance, Jason Aurelius said, resting his head on the seat back, holding the bag, hoping the retching wouldn’t begin again.

I see it, Aaron replied, easing the car down the extremely narrow lane that hadn’t seen a vehicle in years. Branches scrapped along the sides of the car, creating an irritating scratching noise. Doesn’t sound pretty out there.

The other vehicles are calling in. We appear to have lost them, Herbert informed both members.

If they come this way they’ll see the mess we made of the road. Aaron stopped the car and got out.

What are you doing? Jason Aurelius asked, terrified of being left alone.

Moving some brush back to cover our tracks. Take it easy. I’ll only be a minute, Aaron whispered, leaning back in the car to talk. Wow! Would you look at the side of the car. It’s really taken a beating.

    Please, come on.

Give me another minute, Aaron said, pulling a large branch across the driveway. Okay. That should do it, he said, turning the key. Slowly they approached the house.

I’ve got Mitchell’s IG. I transmitted our coordinates. We are in his service area. Unfortunately the bridges they would need to reach us are underwater at this time. Guardian Master Sherman will be responding with a squad at first light. Hopefully the water will have receded by then. We were ordered to sit tight and do whatever is necessary, Herbert said. Oh, and the house is occupied.

By whom? Aaron asked, as he drove up to the front door. The porch roof was collapsing, as were the steps. He kept driving until they were behind the house, but facing the drive so he could use the venom cannons if approached. The engine turned off when he stopped,

A small family of three adults and four children, it would appear. I’d say the woman is pregnant. She’s in labor, Healer. We may have to assist, Herbert said.

How can he tell? Aaron asked, eyes on the driveway to see if they had been followed.

He knows, Jason Aurelius replied. Trust him, he said unfastening his restraining belt while reaching for the door.

Get back in here! Sit tight while I check our surroundings, Aaron ordered, locking the door so Healer couldn’t open it. He withdrew his hand weapon, picked up his venom rifle and deployed the drones with orders to give him coverage. Stay put! was his last order as he slipped out.

For at least five anxious minutes Jason Aurelius sat alone wondering what was going on, after Aaron disappeared around the side of the house. First there was a muffled scream as someone was hit by venom fire. Suddenly, Jason Aurelius heard several blasts from a Before-time shot gun.

    CHAPTER 2

Am I correct? Herbert took care of your lesions after you noticed blood in your vomit again this morning? Frederick said, examining his throat with her own Beam glowing blue while he sat in her reclining chair, unable to speak. Why haven’t you told me before now? How long has this been going on? she snapped, not angry, disturbed.

He never said anything to us, Sovereign, Aaron replied, hovering on Jason Aurelius’ left side waiting to hear her diagnosis. He glanced over at Cadman, who had accompanied them to her hospital exam room, where she welcomed them, dressed in green scrubs. Jacob and Shem were teaching a class in the gym when Jason happened to mention his problem. Aaron immediately grabbed his arm, ordering him to report to Frederick. Well, how does it look? Aaron asked, impatient for her diagnosis.

She nodded her head. He has a remarkable unit. Intently she stared at her Third Chair, holding his chin, studying his features, so much like her son. I’m silencing you for the next twenty-four hours. See me tomorrow before you plan your schedule. Keep him on a soft diet for the next couple days. And away from those who might even suggest violence. She touched the controls on the chair to upright it. We are getting close, gentlemen.

Aaron and Cadman glanced at each other, uneasy with her statement.

To what? Jason Aurelius managed to croak, while holding his chest.

I told you not to speak! Frederick said, picking up a straight razor, approaching him where he sat.

I will silence him, Herbert replied over their implants.

Frederick began to unbond his shirt. I want you to lean forward so I can shave the back of your neck.

He stared at her, questioning why with his eyes and motioning with his long slender fingers.

Hasn’t anyone learned sign? she asked of the two Enforcers. On the counter you will see a package of patches. Open one and I’ll show you how to apply it now. Careful not to touch the medicated part. Each one is good for at least eight hours. Have them overlap by a half hour before you remove the first one. Only two are to be worn a day, but not at night while he sleeps. It should buy us more time.

For what? Herbert asked for Jason Aurelius.

Place it here at the base of his skull, but not where Herbert installed the Bio-modem terminal. Jason Aurelius could feel her touch his neck, gently stroking his flesh. You might have an initial reaction. A queazy stomach perhaps and a little loopy. It shouldn’t last long, at least the feelings of nausea. The other may be much of this morning, while he adjusts. How do you feel? she asked, leaning around him, looking him in the golden eyes.

He put his hand to his mouth, and lowered his head.

It passes quickly. She bonded his shirt closed and patted his shoulders, giving him a hug, before moving off to straighten her room. Has he eaten today? she asked, looking back at them.

No, he couldn’t keep anything down, Aaron replied, moving forward to place his right hand on his Healer. We’ve been worried.

He probably has about a month with the patches. When you remove the last one, he’ll slip into Transition quickly. Be on guard less he comes upon you in the night without warning. Some have been violent with their Joined. Raymond was, surprising Levi.

I haven’t told him what is to come, Frederick. We weren’t sure how he would handle the revelation. We figured it might be better coming from you or another Healer.

Jason Aurelius sat silently staring at the three of them, his eyes wide with fright. What? he asked, forming the word with his mouth and hands though they couldn’t understand sign. Herbert held him, not permitting him to speak.

Frederick pulled her tall metal stool over to sit in front of him and pick up his right hand to hold. For each of us chosen to sit in First Chair there is an ordeal. She paused to look up at Aaron and Cadman standing beside him, each with a hand on his shoulders. You are not the first to endure. And most likely not the last. It is a time of release. All of your pent up anger and fear will explode in a fit of rage. Much like a mad man you will appear unable to control your thoughts or actions. For your own good, we will lock you away while you deal with the feelings of torment. But your Joined will not abandon you. They alone, with a chosen Healer, will care for all your needs, seeing you are fed, washed and attended daily in your most personal moments. It’s a responsibility they accept willingly. Many ascending never remember anything that transpired during the time of Transition. But when it is complete, you will be able to sit in First Chair and be free of animosity. Please forgive me my time attacking you. It was out of character for a prepared Healer. I paid dearly. She glanced up at his Enforcers. You have selected your Joined well, Dear One. I know them to be men of honor.

Jason Aurelius sat back in the chair holding the arms, eager to leave. But the news didn’t appear to be something he could hide from even if they would allow him to seek safe haven. Herbert voiced his concerns. How long does it last?

From a month to several, Frederick replied. How do you feel?

He nodded his head and signed better. The nausea had passed.

He is hungry, Sovereign, Herbert replied for him. Actually Herbert was starving, too, longing for a tall cold glass of milk.

Remember, soft diet while his throat completely heals, she instructed, rising with them. Contact me immediately with any concerns either of you may have regarding his health. I’m sure you’ll tell Jacob. And without question, you, Herbert.

The filament waved a blue tip about at her.

Thank you for care given, Aaron said, helping Jason with his robe and sash.

You’re off duty, were her parting words. Relax. Stay off your unit. Morgan is capable of handling it.

Let’s go to the dining room, Aaron suggested, as they left Frederick’s unit, heading for the elevator.

What do you want to eat? Cadman asked, taking out his elevator key.

Jason Aurelius signed two soft boiled eggs, apple sauce, milk, and tea with honey. The only one to understand him was Herbert. And we’d like anything else soft they may have in the kitchen. Mashed potatoes or maybe cottage cheese, Herbert said, adding to Jason Aurelius’ order as he conveyed it to the Enforcers. Perhaps grits and shrimp with butter melted on top. I hear they are a Southern delight. Yes, some of those, too.

Jason Aurelius shook his head and laughed silently.

Shrimp? Where does he think we live? Think he’s really hungry? Aaron asked, watching the floor numbers as they descended to the lower level. And he talks about us eating huge meals.

We should be thankful he wants to eat, Cadman replied as the door opened. Especially after Frederick’s news to him.

    Jason Aurelius signed a response.

Well, Herbert, what did he say? Aaron asked, holding his Healer’s right arm, gently guiding him along through the groups of people.

Scared, Herbert whispered in their thoughts.

So are we, Cadman replied, also subdued.

We’ll get through this together, Healer. You can count on us, Aaron said, his voice hoarse and breaking. I’ve been reading. Raymond will be able to guide you.

Jason Aurelius nodded his head, then signed trust.

It was decided Cadman would place the order while Aaron sat with Healer, keeping watch, preventing others from disturbing his fragile state. Aaron studied Healer twisting the edge of his cloth napkin about, causing it to fray. Compassionately he placed his leather glove covered warrior hand on top of Healer’s, hoping to give him courage.

Are you feeling any better? he asked, gazing into the dark hood, able to see Jason’s features since he was wearing his helmet.

Jason Aurelius shook his head no and covered his mouth. But it was in sorrow, not the usual upset stomach. With Herbert’s aid, he replied over the implant, What of Galen? How will I be able to stand by him if I am to go mad? His time is short. There is so much I have to teach him yet. We were engaged in the principals behind the hood sensors. He so wanted to stand before Assembly, able to darken.

    Doesn’t he have another year?

    Healer nodded.

We’ll work it out. The three of us will assist him if necessary.

A blind man? Jason Aurelius asked, finding it humorous.

That blind man learned to darken before most youths. Give him credit. Eat now, Aaron said, when Cadman arrived with a tray.

Both Enforcers had to taste the grits, smothered in butter with maple syrup and some of the dippings from the soft boiled eggs. Cadman went up to get a serving for himself. Aaron wasn’t sure he liked them.

Maybe with liver and onions, Aaron said, unable to keep a straight face, knowing how Jason despised liver in any form. He decided Frederick was correct, Jason acted a little intoxicated. Maybe it was better than depressed. Still he hated to mention the fact that he was due in the gym for a class. So was Cadman. Perhaps they should cancel.

You must keep to schedule, Herbert replied for Healer. Jacob will return soon. We’ll be fine together. I don’t need a babysitter. I’d rather think of him as company. Jason Aurelius smiled, though his hood was raised. He knew they could see him. Do you fear I may go mad before you return from the gym?

Aaron glanced over at Cadman busy eating his bowl of grits and scrambled eggs. Frederick said a month or two, he replied, keeping his voice volume low, to almost a whisper.

Then I have to use my time wisely. Perhaps I should go to the lab and work with the team attempting to find a cure for the virus. We seem so close to a break-thru. Morgan can manage Pediatrics without me. She has Kinsley and Stuart, plus Quentin.

Slow down, Aaron said, a hand on his shoulder. No work today. Frederick’s order, remember? You’re running on adrenalin from that drug. Give it time to stabilize in your system.

Am I? Jason Aurelius asked via Herbert, staring at his body guards.

    Most certainly, Cadman replied.

We’re returning to chambers and you’re going to find something quiet to occupy your time. Draw perhaps. Cadman and I will teach our classes, then be right back.

So we can all stare at each other and wait for me to go crazy?

Uneasy with Jason’s question, Aaron sighed deeply as he sat back in his chair, watching Second, hoping he might have some insight to share.

I need to keep busy, Jason Aurelius said with his hands, allowing Herbert to interpret.

Take today to relax. Tomorrow will be soon enough to resume your responsibilities, Aaron said, realizing it was similar to knowing the date of your own death. And not a pleasant one. Please, Aaron said, patiently.

Jason Aurelius bowed his head, then began to rise from the table. He nodded as he looked up, signing go home. And when you two return, I’m going to start teaching you the alphabet. Maybe some simple words, too. Okay? he asked, signing.

Aaron looked over at Cadman who was getting his key for the elevator. We can do that for you, Healer. Right, Second?

I’m a little slow with other languages. And I’ll never understand Jacob’s dots.

Do I have to make it an order? Aaron asked, staring him down, growling in his harsh voice.

I’ll learn for your sake, Healer, Cadman replied, quickly giving in. But I’ve warned you, I’m dumb.

I’ll keep it simple. You’ll be fine. At least some of us will be it seems, Herbert said, sharing Jason’s thoughts.

Aaron took Jason Aurelius’ arm guiding him into the elevator. You’re going to make a compassionate Sovereign one day. Trust us, Healer.

The three of them were silent for the ride down to the hospital tunnel and on the walk back to Healer building. Jason Aurelius indicated he wanted to walk upstairs to chambers. He was experiencing a lightheaded feeling, but chose not to mention it to either of them. Surely they would confine him to chambers with an assigned Healer while they were gone. No, he had already made plans for what he would do when they left him with Jacob.

You want to go where? Jacob asked, removing his helmet and gloves, once they were alone.

The cupola to see the view for myself, Jason Aurelius said over the implant, slipping a small pad in his robe pocket along with several drawing pencils. It’s a fine spring day. I’m not going to sit around and twiddle my thumbs until I go mad.

With me? Why don’t you wait for Aaron?

Now, Enforcer! Put your helmet back on.

This is wrong, Jason. You’re supposed to rest today, Jacob replied, hooking his chin strap.

We aren’t going to see anyone. It will just be the two of us, Healer replied opening the door to the hallway without waiting for Jacob to pick up Shem’s harness. They told me to keep low and stay away from violence. I want to sketch.

You’re right, I’m not going to see anyone. I’ll be in the holding cells, when Aaron hears.

Jacob, you’re up for promotion to Master Enforcer. You have rights. And I certainly do. We’ll take the elevator up to the fourth floor, then the steps to the cupola. Both my grandmother and Galen found it was worthy to sketch. Have you ever been there?

Once as a Student. The view was breathtaking. I can see it in my mind. But the metal steps are steep and narrow. We’ll have to take it slow.

No reason to hurry, Jason Aurelius replied, eager for adventure. Maybe we could go to Members’ Garden, too. I’m desperate for some sunshine.

As you wish, Healer, Jacob said, holding the elevator door for his Joined to enter.

You’ve lost the last bit of sight? Jason Aurelius asked, as the door slid closed, sealing them off to other members.

It’s gone, Healer. Jacob felt for the button on the control panel. Shem is my eyes, he said, reaching down to touch his dog.

The three of them climbed the steps, Jason Aurelius leading the way, then Shem with Jacob being last. It was a balmy day in late May, but breezy high above Protectorate’s stone buildings. Jason Aurelius removed his hood to stare out over the countryside at the valley stretched before them. It appeared a patchwork as farmers planted their fields. Healer leaned on the wooden railing inhaling the fragrance of spring flowers wafting up to them, from the gardens below. He could hear voices of members walking the paths. And of course the wind chime hanging in the oak tree near his chamber windows.

It’s beautiful, Jacob, Herbert said for him. Why haven’t I come up here before?

Busy? Jacob replied, standing back while holding onto Shem.

Jason Aurelius removed his pad to place on the three foot tall railing before him, then removed a pencil to sketch. You know I’ll be twenty-nine soon, he said, beginning his drawing. Wonder if I’ll be aware of the time.

Perhaps so, Jason. Frederick is attempting to slow the process to buy you more time.

Why? he asked, busy with a rough drawing so he could remember the scenery for a better one later.

Transition should be a time of urgency to release all pent up emotions. If the Healer isn’t really ready, it will be incomplete. Much like the evil displayed by Luther Manfred, I’m told.

He was never venom pure, Jason Aurelius said, remembering the dreadful day of his death at the hands of Frederick.

No, and his Joined suffered most of all. Frederick has been aware of your progress. The venom has been escalating rapidly in the last few months. Herbert has been monitoring it for her. She wants it to reach one hundred percent before the last patch is removed. You will be venom pure when the ordeal is complete.

Ordeal, Jason Aurelius repeated the word in his mind. You’re saying my miseries will increase? How will I work? I can barely function now. Strangely enough his stomach wasn’t upset by their conversation.

The patches will provide a time of stability. False perhaps. But it will allow you to function in your duties. How do you feel, Jason?

Like I should be more upset than I am over your news.

It’s the patch, Healer. Your drug report will be positive for narcotics. Frederick could deny you hospital rights.

Jason Aurelius shook his head. I pray not. I have cases to oversee.

Maybe she’ll only restrict operating since a clear head is necessary.

What can I do to shorten the time, Jacob? he asked, staring at the valley below, wishing he could have been a simple farmer, like Terrance Stuffer. I can shovel poop, he muttered to Herbert. I can gather eggs without breaking them.

You are destined for so much more, Herbert said to him. Those simple farmers are counting on you to lead them back to a time of stability for our country. Hasn’t even George Stuffer run for public office as Mayor of town, hoping to establish a free society once again? What of Colonel Fareman and Militia Men and their army of the people by the people and for the people to keep our Nation safe from rebels? Other countries are preparing themselves. We won’t be a cut off island forever. We are desperate for change.

You say all this, Herbert, and my teachers are still fighting a battle of ignorance with some of the parents of students.

Citizen teachers are creating changes, too. Have patience. I see the robes being removed in your lifetime.

How I wish, Herbert. Jason Aurelius glanced back at Jacob standing silently. We should be going, Herbert said, for him.

Where to, Healer? Jacob asked, opening the door to the stairwell.

The garden for vitamin D, Herbert said, laughing, as Jason Aurelius pulled up his hood, but kept it lightened while they made their way down the steep steps. Allow me to go first, Jacob. I wouldn’t want you to trip.

When they reached the bottom, Jason Aurelius moved aside so Jacob could open the door. But the young man paused to place his gloved hand on Healer’s right shoulder.

Dear Jesus, we are depending on your mercy to guide this chosen Healer with the future of our war-torn Nation. Bring us back to the ideals established so long ago. May we once again enjoy the liberties our founding fathers envisioned for all citizens. We ask that you be with him whether it be here in our state of New Maryland or at Central. Guide him with Your love and compassion. In Your most precious name. Amen.

    Herbert whispered amen, also.

Ready? Jacob asked, opening the door.

Jason Aurelius darkened his hood and straightened his black sash. Thank you, Enforcer.

I am here for you. Jacob took Jason Aurelius’ right elbow for his own guidance and Healer’s protection.

As they were making their way to the elevator, Parker contacted Jason Aurelius through IG.

Sorry to bother you on your day off. The Miles family brought Jackie in an hour ago. I’m afraid she’s dying. The tumors have increased in size and numbers. I have her on a respirator. Kidney and liver functions are shutting down. Her lungs are filling up with fluid. Heart sounds are weak. She hasn’t long to live. I thought you’d want to know, Jason Aurelius.

I’ll be right there! he replied, walking faster towards the elevator.

Healer, you were told not to …

To what, Jacob? Jason Aurelius asked, whispering, interrupting him mid-sentence. Contact Frederick. Go ahead tell on me. And while you’re at it, call Aaron. He can meet me there and yell at me, too. This family is my responsibility. I will be present for her final moments. Get your keys out or I’ll do it myself, Lawgiver!

Yes, Healer, Jacob said, inserting the key in the elevator control, locking them to the main floor.

We’ll cut across the lawn, Jason Aurelius said, his voice straining to be heard. Herbert, do something about my throat, please. And quickly!

Again Jacob took his elbow as they almost ran across the grass. Jason Aurelius could hear Jacob talking on his helmet microphone. Lawgiver was following procedures, alerting Aaron and Frederick. Jason Aurelius didn’t want to know what either of them said. His duty to respond to his patient’s needs came first before his own health. He would not violate Healer Oath. Nor would he abandon the child in death. He had made a promise to her.

Your throat should start feeling better in a couple minutes. Conserve your voice till I finish. Do you have mints in your pocket? Try one. And relax, Herbert instructed.

Rather than take the elevator upstairs to Pediatrics, they quickly climbed the steps. Parker met them in the hallway.

She’s still alive, but not by much. Room six. Her family is with her, Parker said, guiding them along. Like most on Jason Aurelius’ service, Parker was wearing green scrubs and a white lab coat.

Jason Aurelius removed his hood, then began to untie his black sash. He handed both off to a young student, requesting she bring him a clean lab coat from his office, as she squirted gloves on his bare hands.

Entering the slightly darkened room, he went to assess the child’s condition for himself. Parker was correct, Jackie had only moments left to live. Jason Aurelius picked up her cold right hand to hold. Herbert snaked down his arm to also evaluate the once vibrant little girl’s condition.

I’m here, Jackie, Jason Aurelius whispered, stroking her face with his left hand. Like I promised, honey.

Student arrived with his lab coat, holding it for him to put on. Once dressed, he picked up Jackie’s hand to hold again. He requested Student remain. She needed to experience death of a child if she was going to remain on Pediatrics.

Jason Aurelius watched her parents on her other side of the bed, holding her other hand. Both were crying, quietly.

You tried, Healer, her father said. For that we are grateful. You gave us another year and a half with her. Thank you for care given.

Herbert went black at the same time the monitors registered a flat line, stopping their rhythmic beeping. Parker stepped forward to turn off the life support systems, and disconnect tubing. He pulled the blanket up on her chest to make it appear she was sleeping peacefully. Student assisted him.

If you’d like a moment alone, we’ll be leaving, Jason Aurelius said, giving Jackie a final pat on her shoulder. Take your time. No hurry, he said, gathering his team and heading for the door.

Jacob and Shem were the last to leave.

Handle things, Parker. Oh, Parker, he said, turning back. See if maintenance will install liquid glove dispensers outside each patients’ room. We need to be better protected. And if you would, contact Desmond. Thank her for me. And, Parker, I’m submitting your papers for Guardian Master. Excuse me now. I’m about to be reprimanded, he said, heading for his office to wash and pick up his robe.

Parker stood in the hallway, looking dumbfounded. Could Jason Aurelius be serious? A Guardian Master who couldn’t wear the Beam unit?

Jason Aurelius entered his office, expecting Frederick to be waiting for him. At least Aaron. But no one was there, nor did they come.

Where to, Healer? Jacob asked, while helping him dress again.

The garden. I require a quiet moment, he whispered, overcome with emotions.

They both removed their head coverings to sit in the warm sun. Chapel bell sounded the twelve o’clock hour. They were alone in the private garden. Jason Aurelius withdrew his sketch pad to study his drawing. Jacob released Shem’s harness so the dog could run free and relieve himself.

What are you thinking, Healer? Jacob asked, feeling cut off from the rest of the world.

    I’m trying not to, Jacob.

Jacob nodded his bare head. Some days Third appeared so young. Jason Aurelius felt like an old man when he studied him, contemplating their age. In reality they were only four years apart.

The two of them sat quietly. Shem roamed about sniffing and marking his bounds. He was the only dog permitted access to the garden, but there were plenty of wild animal smells to keep him busy. The dogs on guard duty had their own place to run for exercise.

Where is he? Jacob asked, when the dog didn’t come back to check on him for ten minutes.

He’s asleep in the sunshine. I feel my eyes closing, too, Jason Aurelius whispered, careful of his throat.

Do you want to leave, Healer?

    Not yet. I’m sketching.

Jacob nodded. It’s a beautiful day.

    How can you tell?

The warm sun on my face. Gentle breeze. Aroma of the flowers and the recently cut grass. Are there clouds?

A few, Jason Aurelius replied, looking up from his sketch to check. I’m almost ashamed to admit, but I didn’t notice until you said something. It is a beautiful day, Enforcer. We should all see it through the eyes of a blind man. Perhaps we’d appreciate the world more.

Don’t apologize, Healer. I never took notice of the stars. Now I would give anything to gaze at the heavens on a clear night, and marvel at the wonders above. I am grateful for Shem. He’s my companion and eyes.

Hearing his name, the dog rose from the grass and bound over to check on Jacob, eager for his harness.

    Chapel bell chimed the half-hour.

We should probably return to chambers, Jason Aurelius said, putting his pad in his deep pocket. Aaron’s going to be looking for me.

No sooner had he made the comment, than Aaron called on the implants. Where are you two? Aaron asked, sounding impatient and concerned.

Jacob put on his helmet to respond. The garden. We’re leaving now.

I’m going to order mid-day. Anyone want something special?

You know what I like, Jason Aurelius replied with Herbert speaking for him.

    You, Third?

    I trust your judgement, First.

Okay, liver all around, Aaron replied, laughing.

Since it was faster, they rode the elevator.

Cadman was getting the table ready for mid-day, moving stuff over to the desks. Any flat surface served like a magnet, attracting books, papers and whatever someone was working on that day. Farrell had kept the men in line. Now that she was gone, the office had rapidly deteriorated to clutter. Jason Aurelius tried, but he was only one person. Instead, he gave up trying to change Aaron, deciding to live with his faults. He sure couldn’t live without him.

As soon as the meal was complete, Jason Aurelius began to teach them to sign the alphabet. At least Aaron and Cadman. Jacob had to leave for a class with Judge Melrose. Since he couldn’t see, it really didn’t matter much. Actually, Jason Aurelius was planning to show his hands how to form the letters and words.

Now you do realize I have a history class to teach in a half-hour, Aaron said, hoping to cut his lesson short.

Jason Aurelius glared at him, and pointed to the chair when he started to rise. He signed have time. The warrior didn’t understand, but he got the meaning from Healer’s expression.

Guess I have fifteen minutes or so before I’m due in class, he said, resuming his seat.

You go too? Jason Aurelius asked, Cadman.

The two Enforcers looked at each other for meaning to his question.

If you asked about me going, yes I have a group of Students for a weapons class in a half-hour, too. But I have time, Healer. Go ahead.

Jason Aurelius smiled and nodded his head.

They proved to be quick students, learning the alphabet, but still slow when he spelled through a word. He told them not to worry. That went over their heads completely.

I’ve really got to go, Aaron said, reaching for his helmet and gloves. You will behave yourself while we’re gone, won’t you?

Jason Aurelius pointed to his desk covered in files. He rose with them, walking them to the door. He signed the members blessing to his friends, hoping they would return safely.

In case you’re interested, I have a class in the pool next. Why don’t you join me? I had the retractable ceiling slid open on the pool this morning. We all need sunshine, Aaron said. You look a little pale.

Jason Aurelius crossed his arms and shivered.

The warm air will help heat the water. I’ll expect you at three. Cadman has a class of Students. Mine are Elders.

Jason Aurelius slowly spelled a word for them.

Was that Jacob? Aaron asked, checking
