The Ultimate Guide to Gopro Hero 9 - Justin Whiting
First Steps
Before you go out to do any filming or shoot any photos, make sure your GoPro is updated to the latest firmware and take the time to connect your GoPro to the GoPro Application on your phone.
You can automatically update the camera either by connecting to the GoPro APP or by plugging the camera into your computer and using the free GoPro desktop software.
The GoPro App is a great tool that allows you to control your camera remotely, change settings/modes, preview the image, download photos and video for immediate posting and more.
If there is a firmware update available for your camera, you will be notified when you connect to the App. Always have your camera fully updated to make sure you hav all the newest features.
How to connect your Hero 9 to your phone
1. Turn on your camera.
2. Open the utility menu by swiping down from the top of the touch display, then swipe left.
3. Select Connections and then Connect device.
4. Tap GoPro App and put your camera into pairing mode.
5. Open the GoPro App on your phone.
6. Select the camera icon in the lower left and it will search for your camera.
7. We found a GoPro
will pop up with a Connect
button. Hit Connect.
8. Now you will have the option to change your cameras name if you want, or just continue with the default.
9. Now your camera is connected and ready to use with the App.
Pre-Adventure Checklist
Before heading out with your camera, make sure you have these things with you to ensure the best experience possible:
Update your camera
Always make sure your camera has the newest firmware.
Extra batteries
The GoPro battery lasts about an hour and twenty minutes but shooting in high resolution or extreme weather can significantly lower it. Having extra batteries can save many headaches. Make sure they are all charged!
Lens cloth
Keep your lens clean and dry! Nothing can ruin a photo faster than dirt or water on the lens. Use a microfiber cloth to avoid any potential scratches.
Micro SD Card
You should already have one in your camera, but it is worth mentioning. Also, make sure you have at least a class 10 card which writes at 633X or faster. The GoPro website sells approved cards. If you buy a cheap slower card it will not be able to write high resolution or high frame rate footage.
Small screwdriver
This is great for building and adjusting mounts.
Sticky mounts
These are the adhesive mounts that come with the camera. Always good to have a few extra in case you need to remount the camera, or you want to try a new mounting.
Extensions and 90-degree twists with extra screws
These extensions come with your camera. They are great to use for mounting the camera in different arrangements.
Any additional mounts you have
The more space you have the more mounts you can bring. Plan in advance which shots you want to get and make sure you have the proper mounts, screws and accessories to get the shot.
Basic Video Settings
The GoPro Hero 9 has a very wide range of settings including many resolutions, frame rates, aspect ratios and more professional settings. The variety of settings is very powerful but can also be a little overwhelming.
In this section we will break down all the different settings, so you understand what they are, why they are important and which setting is best for you in each scenario.
Resolutions
Resolution is how many pixels are recorded in each frame of your video. More pixels mean a higher quality image. If there fewer pixels then it will make your image look blocky
and compressed on a high-resolution screen or TV. Resolution is shown as two numbers, for example 1920 X 1080 (for 1080P). This means that there are 1080 lines stacked on top of each other and each line is 19 20 pixels wide.
The GoPro Hero 9 shoots at many different resolutions starting at 1080P all the way up to 5K. Since 5K is the highest resolution, it should be the best... right?
Not necessarily. 5K is a very powerful tool but it is limited to only 30 frames per second, so you cannot shoot slow motion. Also, you may have trouble playing 5K footage unless you have a very powerful computer and 5K footage takes up lots of space on your memory card. High resolutions like 4K and 5K cannot be previewed or played on your smart phone and cannot by edited using most smart phones.
5K (5120X2880 available at 24, 25 and 30 FPS)
5K has an incredibly sharp image at a very high resolution. 5K is amazing for cinematic shots and shots where you want to crop in during editing. Since the 5K image is so big, when you are editing you can zoom into the image and still maintain high quality (even if you are editing on a 4K timeline). That being said, 5K files are very
