    Preface

Jake’s Place is a sequel to the jaw-dropping, suspenseful, and thrilling novel The Eye of the SEAL . Danny Peterson was a well decorated SEAL who was wounded in combat. He was carrying from the battlefield a wounded fellow SEAL, when a mortar exploded next to Danny. That SEAL’s name was Jake Olson.

Jake died and Danny was severely injured. Danny lost an eye and an ear and almost lost both his right leg and arm. Both Jake and Danny belonged to SEAL Team Bravo, a SEAL unit belonging to SEAL Team Six.

Danny’s father, Happy Peterson, was an eye surgeon and inventor of medical apparatus. Happy invented many optical products used by the military. His inventions improved the vision of soldiers fighting in the field, they allowed pilots to see through clouds, fog, rain, and smoke while on bombing missions. His inventions helped elite forces such as the SEALs to perform their missions in complete darkness. These inventions came in the form of glasses, goggles, and windshields for armored vehicles and in cockpits of military planes.

Danny’s father, after years of experiments, had developed a magical eye, which incorporated a lot of his inventions. Properly connected to the human brain, the eye could perform five different functions: (1) the eye could turn from a blind one into one with 20/20 vision; (2) the eye could see through most objects, such as steel, granite, boulders, clothing, and other masses; (3) the eye could create enough heat to burn holes through solid steel, melt solid objects, and start fires; (4) the eye could turn nocturnal and make complete darkness look like a sunny afternoon and allow you to see through thick fog and smoke; (5) the last function could produce a small but powerful laser beam that was effective at long distances. You could fire a rifle or pistol and the bullet would follow the laser beam up to three thousand yards and hit the target dead center where the laser beam was aimed.

After being discharged from the Navy and after months of therapy, Danny became the first recipient of this magical eye.

Danny’s wife, Candy, graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a doctorate in criminology. She became a field agent with the FBI, specializing in drug and human smuggling.

With Danny’s new vision abilities, he amassed over $1 billion from gambling in casinos across the country. He became a Robin Hood, he stole from the rich and gave to the poor. Danny took his winnings and acquired eight thousand acres in Montana and was building a town called Jake’s Place. A town for wounded warriors and disabled veterans and their families and would be owned and operated by the same veterans who lived there. There would be a ski resort, golf courses, amusement park, many residential areas, and a complete city that owned its own utilities. There would be a special SEAL base located in a secluded area in Jake’s Place. These SEALs would fight terrorism, drug and human trafficking, and organized crime in the United States.

Danny’s wife, Candy, and two other FBI agents were brutally tortured and murdered in Miami by an organized drug-trafficking gang called the Lobos. Their bodies were flown back to DC for autopsies. After recovering her body and returning it back to their hometown of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, for the funeral, Danny went immediately to the crime scene in Miami.

With the help of his magical eye and some information given him by the FBI, he gathered information on the gang and those who murdered his wife. While he was in Miami he killed six Lobos and returned back to Rhinelander for Candy’s funeral. After the funeral Danny returned to Miami to extract more revenge on the Lobos for his wife’s murder.

This is where Jake’s Place begins. Be prepared for a suspenseful, nail-biting novel about murder, torture, sex, and revenge while at the same time building a town for wounded warriors, disabled veterans, and their families.

This is the third book written by this author, Daniel John Garber.

    CHAPTER ONE

    Revenge in Miami

On April 21, 2004, three days after Candy’s funeral, Danny headed back to Miami, where his wife was brutally tortured and murdered by an organized drug-trafficking gang called the Lobos.

Candy and two other FBI agents had left Washington, DC, ten days earlier to investigate the gang called the Lobos. The gang was located in an area of Miami called Little Pecos. The Lobos cornered the three FBI agents in an old abandoned warehouse. They gang-raped Candy and cut her hands and breasts off. They castrated the two male FBI agents, then beheaded them. They stuffed one agent’s genitals into Candy’s mouth. The Lobos left a note at the scene that read, Don’t fuck with us. There were about three hundred members of the Lobo gang and they all had a tattoo of a two-headed dragon on their left forearm.

On Danny’s first visit to the crime scene, he met Candy’s supervisor Joe Jacobson at the abandoned warehouse where the murders took place. Joe gave Danny some confidential information he had on the gang. Joe told Danny that he could be fired for giving him this information, so please keep this to yourself. Joe felt some responsibility for Candy’s death as he was the one who sent the agents to Little Pecos. He thought that was the least he could do for Danny.

While Danny was there, he used his magical eye to see through some old warehouses where he spotted a group of Lobos playing cards and smoking dope in an old warehouse that was full of weapons and thousands of rounds of ammo.

Danny went back to his hotel that night and opened up the large envelope that Joe had given him. Inside were pictures and names of some of the Lobos, including their leader Pueblo Martinez and three of his lieutenants, Manny Sanchez, Jose Fents, and Jorge Beneitz. Pueblo’s girlfriend’s name was Maria Fluentez. She was a beautiful woman and had been Pueblo’s girlfriend for six years, but they were not married. There was a lot of information in the envelope that would help Danny extract his revenge.

The Lobos had a large boat at a nearby marina and every Thursday six Lobos took the boat out at 10:00 a.m. to go deep-sea fishing.

The next day was Wednesday, Danny rented a van, bought some tools, a chainsaw, a fishing pole, a large gaff, a casting net, some rope, duct tape and a propane blowtorch. Danny went to a different marina about forty minutes away from where the Lobos’ boat was located. The Lobos’ boat was named High Times.

Danny leased a forty-foot fishing boat with two, three hundred horsepower twin outboards for three days for a $1,000 a day, $3,000 security deposit, and $1,000 in miscellaneous fees. Danny gave the owner a fake driver’s license and $7,000 cash. Danny was to have the boat back at the marina by 7:00 p.m. Saturday night.

On Thursday morning Danny picked up his fishing boat and drove to the Lobos’ marina. He waited outside their marina tossing his casting net so it looked like he was trying to catch bait fish. He turned his eye to power mode and watched what was happening on High Times. There were two Lobos on the boat doing fishing chores. They were placing rods and reels in all the rod holders and getting the outriggers set. Just then four more Lobos showed up with some beer, ice, and food. Within twenty minutes they cast off their lines and were on their way for a day of fishing. They passed Danny casting his net, they gave him the finger and called Danny a dumb bastard, they said, we bought our bait fish, and they all laughed at Danny.

Danny let them get almost out of sight and followed them. When they got about an hour out and no other boats were around, Danny opened up the throttles and closed the gap. Danny put his eye into heat mode. When Danny got within fifty yards of High Times, he burned six gaping holes in her hull below the waterline. High Times sank within five minutes. All the Lobos were thrashing in the water screaming for help. Danny put his eye into laser mode and drove his boat right into the middle of the screaming Lobos. Danny yelled at them. Danny said the only way you can get on this boat is by climbing up this ladder. He held the ladder up and put it on this transom and said one at a time.

The first Lobo climbed the ladder, and as he jumped on the deck, Danny hit him in the head with the butt of his pistol, the Lobo was out cold. As Danny turned around the second Lobo was on the top rung of the ladder. Danny shot him right between the eyes and he fell back into the ocean. Danny then put the laser beam on the other four and shot them all in the head. Now there is five dead Lobos floating in the ocean. Danny took the unconscious Lobo down below and took all his clothes off and tied him to a chair that was bolted to the deck, and tied his arms to a table that was also bolted to the deck right in front of the chair. Danny tied the legs of the Lobo to the front legs of the chair so that the Lobo was spread-eagled and couldn’t move. Danny then wrapped duct tape around his mouth.

Danny grabbed the gaff and went topside. He gaffed each floating Lobo and dragged them aboard through the transom hatch door. He piled them together and started up the chainsaw. He cut the left forearm with the two-headed dragon tattoo off each Lobo at the elbow. He then opened the transom hatch door and pushed each bleeding body into the ocean. The blood would attract the sharks and there would be on more Lobos. Danny yelled come and get it boys. Danny then drove the boat several miles from the dead Lobos and cut off the engines and went down below.

The Lobo he had tied up was now conscious and his eyes were as big as saucers. He must’ve heard the chainsaw. Danny took the duct tape off his mouth and said good morning. Danny then told the Lobo he was going to ask him some questions. If he lied, he was going to cut one of his fingers off and set his balls on fire with the propane blowtorch.

With a smile on his face, Danny lit the blowtorch and pulled a photo of Pueblo Martinez and showed it to the Lobo. Danny said, Do you know who this is? The Lobo answered no. Danny took a very sharp pair of wire cutters and cut off one finger of the Lobo. Blood was gushing everywhere and the Lobo was screaming. Then Danny took the blowtorch to his balls and the Lobo went crazy. Danny let him agonize and suffer in pain for a while. Then Danny pulled another photo out of Manny Sanchez and asked him if he knew who he was. The Lobo said no. Danny cut another finger off while the Lobo was screaming, and this time Danny held the blowtorch to his balls a lot longer. The Lobo just about passed out and was crying and screaming in pain. There was blood everywhere and his balls were on fire.

Danny said to the Lobo, I think I am wasting my time. I am going to give you one more chance, and if you lie again, I am going to cut all your fingers off, then cut your cock off and hold the blowtorch to your balls until you die.

The Lobo said, I will tell you anything you want to know if you will let me live.

Danny said, Okay, but I will know if you are lying.

Danny then held up the picture of Pueblo and the Lobo said, That is Pueblo Martinez, he is the leader of the Lobos.

Danny said, Very good. He then held up a picture of Manny Sanchez and the Lobo identified him by his name and said he was one of Pueblo’s lieutenants. Then Danny held up the rest of the pictures and the Lobo identified them all, including Maria, Pueblo’s girlfriend. He gave Danny names and addresses of many of the Lobos. The name and locations of all their hang outs including their main clubhouse.

Danny said to the Lobo, Good job, you didn’t lie one time. Now I am going to ask you two more questions. If you answer them truthfully, I will let you live. Hell, I will even take you to the hospital. However, if you lie or leave out any details that I think you know, you will die a slow, painful death. Danny then asked him which Lobos were at the warehouse when the three FBI agents were murdered. The Lobo couldn’t get it out fast enough, Pueblo Martinez, Jorge Beneitz, Feliep Coracoas, a guy by the name of Rocco and Pueblo’s girlfriend Maria.

Danny then asked when and where the next big drug delivery was. The Lobo said, Wednesday, the twenty-second, at some marina in Key Largo. It’s coming from Mexico and that’s all I know.

Danny said, Fine, now tell me your name.

    The Lobo said, Michael Mendez.

Now tell me the names of your fishing buddies and the Lobo gave him all their names. Danny was writing all this down plus he was taping it.

Danny said, Now I am going to feed you to the sharks.

Michael starting crying and said, But you told me you would let me live.

    Danny said, I lied.

Danny then dragged Michael top side and started up the chainsaw.

While Michael was screaming, Danny said, This is for Candy, and cut his left forearm off and stacked it with the others. Michael was barely alive when he cut his other arm off, then both legs and then his head. Danny pushed all the body parts into the ocean and said come and get it boys. Danny then drove the boat several miles away and again cut off the engines.

Danny hosed down all six forearms and let them dry and bake in the hot sun. He then cleaned up the boat and threw all the tools and chainsaw into the ocean. Two hours later when Danny arrived back to the marina, he wrote the owner a note that said, I got seasick and am turning the boat in early, keep the deposit.

Before Danny flew back to Wisconsin for Candy’s funeral, he took a large magic marker and wrote a message on each forearm: You fucked with the wrong guy. Pueblo, you are next. Candy sends her love. I will be back. Your Lobos sleep with the fishes. Kill or be killed. He then drove to the Lobos’ headquarters and threw each arm out the driver’s window right in front of their clubhouse. Danny then went back to his hotel room, had some dinner and several stiff drinks, and went to sleep.

The next morning Danny went to the hotel lobby, had some breakfast, and checked out. At 9:00 a.m., he drove to a Dodge dealership close to the airport. He walked into the dealership and asked to speak to the new car manager. John, the new car manager, met him and asked what he could do for him. Danny and John went into the manager’s office. Danny told the manager he wanted buy a new Dodge van with no seats in the back, just cargo space. He wanted all windows heavily tinted but legal. He wanted a large sunroof that completely retracted so that he could stand in the cargo area and stick his head and shoulders out of the sunroof. He wanted large outside rearview mirrors. He needed air conditioning, radio, power steering, power brakes, and power seats. Danny didn’t care what other options were on the van. The van must be delivered to hangar 15 at the Miami International Airport no later than the afternoon of the twentieth.

Danny told John that he would pay the dealership full list price for the van and would give John $5,000 in cash for his trouble. Danny said, I don’t have a lot of time so I might have to do the paperwork on the twenty-first unless you can do it all now in thirty minutes. I will pay you and the dealership in cash right now. Can you do it?

John turned on his computer to check his inventory. After about five minutes, he said, In order to make the delivery on the twentieth, I will have to install the sunroof, tint the windows, and install the large side-view mirrors. The van is in stock and is dark blue, it is a cargo van, so no back seats and does have all the power options you asked for. John took a few more minutes and came up with a price of $27,000, including taxes and all fees but no gratuity. John told Danny he could have his paperwork ready in twenty minutes. You can go outside on the back lot and see the van.

Danny said, That’s fine. I will go out to my van and get you the cash and look at my new van while you are doing the paperwork. I will call you later this morning with how you will deliver the van to hangar 15 and who your deliveryman will have to talk to in order to get on the tarmac.

They shook hands. John called over a salesman to take Danny to see the van he just bought and said, I will see you in twenty minutes.

Danny saw the van and it was perfect for his purposes. Danny went to his rental van and got a leather bag full of cash. He gave the salesman who showed him the van a hundred-dollar bill for his troubles and the salesman had a big smile on his face and thanked Danny and shook his hand. Danny walked back into John’s office as he was still doing the paperwork. Danny counted out two piles of money; one stack had $27,000 and the other had $5,000. John had a big smile on his face as he watched Danny count the money. As John was writing he said to Danny, I am throwing in a second remote control for the sunroof that you can operate from the driver’s seat or if you prefer from the cargo area.

Danny said, Thanks, that may come in handy. How about some floormats? They both laughed.

John had Danny sign about ten documents, and Danny gave John a total of $32,000.

John thanked Danny and told him not to worry. The van would be there as promised and handed him a set of keys and told him an extra set of keys would be in the glovebox. Danny shook his hand and told him he would call him in a couple of hours with delivery information.

Danny pulled out another $300 and told John to give it to the guy installing the sunroof and to make it as big as possible with no obstructions. Danny returned his rental van and called John with the delivery instructions.

Danny was on his jet and headed back to Rhinelander, Wisconsin, for Candy’s funeral by noon. For the next three days during the funeral process, Danny had meetings with Happy, Rudy, General Smith, Joe Jacobson, Director JB of FBI, and Admiral Matthews; all attended Candy’s funeral. Danny informed JB of the drug deal taking place on the twenty-second in Key Largo. After saying goodbye for the last time to his beloved Candy, Danny was off to Miami to extract revenge for both him and Candy from the Lobos.

At 1:00 p.m. on April 21, Danny landed his jet at the Miami International Airport. He taxied to hangar 15 and parked his jet and his new dark-blue Dodge van was waiting for him. It was perfect. Everything he ordered was on the van. The sunroof was very large and worked perfectly. There was even some very fancy floormats. A note was on the front seat, and it read, Hope you enjoy your floormats. Thanks again. John.

Danny had brought a whole arsenal of weapons with him. He had rifles, pistols, a tranquilizer gun, a rocket launcher, AK-47s, explosives, chloroform, sodium pentothal, many assorted tools, chainsaws, assorted knives and machetes, silencers, and lots of accessories. Everything was neatly stored in cases so nothing was visible and large tarps were covering them. Danny transferred all his equipment from his jet to his van.

Danny checked into the Ritz Carlton and had prepaid for a special parking space close to the front door. Only Danny’s van could be parked there, all others would be towed.

Danny had to be back in Montana at Jake’s Place for a meeting with Admiral Matthews and the other six SEALs on May 15. He had three weeks to get his revenge and satisfy his anger and the loss of his wife Candy.

James Buchanan, JB, the director of the FBI, had given Danny all the data he had on the Lobos. JB had given him an FBI identification badge in case he was arrested by local law enforcement. He also gave Danny his direct private number for him to use if necessary.

No one knew exactly what Danny was going to do, and JB didn’t want to know, as he would have to deny any involvement. JB was informed by Danny of the large drug delivery taking place in Key Largo and had his men working that situation and would let Danny know what went down.

Danny had a big suite with hot tub, exercise equipment and a large conference table. Danny would spend the first two days doing recon on the information he already had plus additional information he would gather while surveying all the known Lobo hangouts, addresses, and information given him by JB.

After two days of observing Lobo activity using his magical eye to see through buildings and verifying facts, Danny was ready to put together his revenge plans.

Danny put all the information he had on the large conference table and spent the next two days planning. He had seen Pueblo and his girlfriend at their favorite hangout. He followed them to Pueblo’s townhouse late at night. Danny had gone back to the crime scene, which was now vacated and verified the weapons were still in the other warehouse nearby. He visited the large Lobo clubhouse where most members hung out. With his magical eye functions, he could gather information without ever leaving his van. He saw notices on the clubhouse walls about the annual Lobo gathering scheduled for May 7 from noon to midnight. Free food and booze, wet T-shirt contest, arm wrestling championship, annual acceptance to newly made Lobos, and their tattoo artist would be there to tattoo the newly admitted Lobos with the double headed dragon.

The Lobos had replaced their missing High Times boat with a new bigger Bertram fishing boat, a sixty-four-footer. They were using it for smuggling drugs and humans. It was a big beautiful expensive boat. There were two Lobos living on the boat. They called it High Times Two. With so much information the large conference table was covered with pictures, names, hangouts, and addresses of many of the Lobos. Their attorneys, accountants, and money-laundering bankers. There was a large safe in Pueblo’s home and an even larger one in his office at the Lobos’ headquarters.

Danny had gotten a call from JB informing him of the drug bust on April 22 in Key Largo between the Lobos and the Mexicans. The FBI let two Lobos and their boat leave the Key Largo marina full of all the drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, and heroin. They tracked the shipment to a warehouse in Little Pecos. The FBI either killed or arrested the Mexicans and remaining Lobos in Key Largo. JB gave Danny the address of the stored drugs and asked Danny if he could find out more about the warehouse and what all was being stored there and report back to him. The FBI let the drugs leave Key Largo on purpose in order to track their destination.

Danny finished his master plan and now had only about eighteen days to complete his mission before he had to be back at Jake’s Place for the May 15 meeting with Admiral Matthews. His first mission was to check out the new warehouse address where they had shipped the Key Largo Mexican drugs.

On the morning of April 27, Danny went to 2230 Industrial Way, a large warehouse facility in a Miami Industrial Park. The warehouse was isolated from other warehouses and had a big fence around the property with a guard in a small shack at the gate entrance. He stopped about two hundred yards from the entrance to 2230 in front of some other warehouse. He pulled two of the more than a dozen magnetic signs he had made. These read Dade County Surveyors, and he put one on each side of his van.

Danny put his eye in power mode and scoped out the entire layout of the Lobos’ warehouse. There was a guard at the gate, three large trucks parked at the loading docks, and a Lobo sitting in a chair outside the front door entrance; he was armed. Inside the large facility were bales of marijuana and pallets of boxes containing white powder, either cocaine or heroin. There were crates full of firearms, both rifles and pistols, and cases of dynamite. There were twelve Lobos inside cutting cocaine and heroin and repacking them in smaller containers. The bales of marijuana were being broke down to what looked like one-pound packages. One Lobo was making labels and attaching them to smaller boxes. There were offices in the warehouse and a few Lobos in the offices. Outside in a parking lot there were more than a dozen cars parked.
