    Chapter 1 Sunset

Annoyed he spent the day shopping with Ivory Ruvara and Crystal Rhineston, Star McLeord dumps the black and yellow stripped sling bag that is said never fills plus a book, on crystal balls, on the table. Why Paul's fiancé and David’s sister cannot go normal shopping like any other female, escapes him. They love the exotic fun fair that sells dangerous and harmful magic. Why his two best friends are always saddle him with babysitting is also a wonder.

At least this time they hadn't gotten into an argument with a stubborn wizard over the reason the wizard doesn't have a match, Star reminds himself, grateful. According to Crystal the wizards match hadn't died, he didn't have one. Same way nuns and monks don't have one.

'Why tell him, then?’ Star had asked, baffled.

Her answer, 'Because he has to know,' had been in a 'don't contest me' tone, Star let it drop.

It seems, trouble finds Crystal when she doesn't manage to find it. Star, David and Ivory are still trying to find the person who sent her to the dangerous town of Brewillow. Instead of being affected, Crystal seems to have grown stronger in her match making ability, matching not only Ivory but Ethan. For Ivory, Crystal had a vague line about Ivory meeting her match in the dark. For Ethan, she specifically told him his daughter's aunt is his match. In other words, the sister of the woman he has a child with is his match.

Soon she will match Saul who is gay. Hopefully, her crystal ball doesn't break like last time. Star wishes this not only for her safety but because Saul can be a pain in the ass, he can't wait to have someone distract him.

Kitty, Crystal's cat, enters his office. For some reason she likes his chest and hates Ivory. Perhaps because Ivory is immune to any magic, including Kitty's charm.

Star lifts her, before she causes havoc trying to get his attention. Holding her in one hand, he uses the other to press his phone.

There is one message from Charlie, David's secretary. Star is David's guard. Any information David needed; Star searched for it.

'Hey. I have no one who needs their background checked. However, the young jerk you told would never marry a pretty woman came here today to announce his engagement. She's a gold digger. Can't you tell him, instead of letting him learn from experience, that sometimes we have to ignore what others say and not try to prove them wrong. I know what you will say,' here Charlie's voice deepens to match Star's, ''Experience is the best teacher and teach a man to fish don't fish for him.'' Charlie releases a long breathe. 'It's tough seeing a blind man going in the wrong direction. It's also tough trying to not let anyone lead you in the wrong direction. Bye.'

Star smiles at the message. Charlie thinks so much, it must hurt. Talks too as soon as it enters his head, often leading to jumbled up stuff, sometimes to great, well thought out ideas.

He's still smiling when he spots Crystal's crystal ball on his desk. She must have left it in the morning when she came to ask him to accompany them for their shopping.

Instinct, tells him to put into the sling bag and hide it. He resists. It might never come out, making a trip to Brewillow necessary. Cautiously, he puts Kitty down telling her, 'I need to hold the ball before it rolls off.'

With two steady hands, ready to use his magic, he quickly snaps the ball. The air around him zaps thrice then quietens again. In his hands he feels the ball become colder and colder. Soon, if he doesn't let go, he'll be touching ice.

His door is thrust open, breathlessly Crystal falls into his office.’ Don’t let go.'

He calmly, despite the frost climbing up his fingers, raises his eyebrows.

'I know. It's cold. Stop using your magic on it,' she instructs placing her fingers on top of his.

Letting go abruptly, she excitedly shares 'I thought I heard wrong. Can you believe I felt it when you touched the ball? You will meet your match at 00.05 on...'

Looking at him Crystal locks her mouth staring at him thoughtfully.

'When?’ he barks. He needs the information.

'That will not work on me. Remember what you told me when the wizard almost fried me.' She imitates his voice, You should read your client. Some information is best left unsaid.

Proud of herself, she lifts her ball from his grasp. Flying out, Crystal reminds him, 'Supper will be ready in ten.'

Females? Star wants to throw something at her. Kitty meows reminding him she needs his attention. 'Females!' This time he huffs out the word.

Hours after surviving dinner without throwing a spear at Crystal, Star jerks awake as the night's silence is shattered by the sound of soundless footstep. He would also call it silence, if he didn't know what silence is. Silence is the lack of emotions that dwells inside him, thriving on his reluctance to speak. Lack of sound is not silence, because emotions have sound and right now, he can hear the person's desperate plea. Weird, since he has physical power not mental power like Violet.

    What time is it?

    23.59.

    Great.

He lets out a long hot breath through his mouth. Matchmaker Crystal predicted he would meet his match at 00.05. Although young, untrained plus inexperienced, Crystal had the wisdom to withhold important information such as the date. She knows him as well as he knows her.

    Very well.

He isn't afraid to run. Running isn't an act of cowardice, it's a means to survive to one day face your fear.

His mother, the reigning queen of Brewillow is matched to her husband. However, his father the King of Zuva, is matched to his mother. Which makes him the heir of two Kingdoms for he is the first born of an heir and an heiress. The catch is, he was born out of official and ceremonial wedlock making him, an heir who cannot rule.

He doesn't want to live without his match. He doesn't want his son to grow up with no parents. He grew up on the border of Brewillow and Zuva being trained by a magic master. His birth status, despite being illegitimate to human laws, came with great power. And responsibility. His never meet his mother and visited his father occasionally enough to know his sisters.

It can't be today; he tells himself dressing efficiently in the grey darkness. What would his match be doing at one's of David's Maison? Five Maisons are used as locations for unlocking the natural personalities of boys. Boys only. Each one has distinct features that helps the process. This one has a theater and ballroom for dancing. It's the least visited but it’s the one David stayed at for longer periods before he met his fiancé, Violet. In addition, the Maison is heavily guarded and is very remote. What are the odds of meeting his match?

Five minutes later, a toothless smile greets him as he opens the locked door to David Rhineston's office. Star's first thought is the sunny smile doesn't match the clean-cut suit or balding head.
