    PART ONE

BRUNO ROSSI couldn’t take another hour under the Tuscan sun. He wiped the sweat off his forehead, his flat cap though shaded his face did nothing to keep him cool. He adjusted his suspenders and looked around for his brother, trying to spot his dirty blonde hair among the greenery of the vineyard.

Nico better not be taking a nap again, Bruno swore as he tossed the last basket of grapes on the back of his grandfather's 1900’s Chevy truck. He honked the horn as he climbed behind the wheel and waited for his brother’s head to pop up above the vines.

Nico! he called out, exhaustion draining his voice. He’d been up since five in the morning and was seriously considering driving off. But then again, so did Nico.

Bruno hung an arm out the window and called out a second time, impatience running through his veins.

The sound of gunshot jolted Bruno to his feet. He ran back into the vineyard calling after his brother.

Bruno pushed through the vines only to find his brother crouched over a cow. What happened? Bruno asked, catching his breath.

The sound of laughter came from the distance and Bruno didn’t have to ask again. The Moretti’s boys had been there.

Those miscreants, Nico hissed as he pressed into the cow’s neck wound, his hands staining with blood. They shot her.

    Why?

    I can’t just leave her.

There’s nothing we can do for her.

We can call Doc, Nico said, hopeful. His farm is just over the hill.

Bruno sighed; he was so exhausted he didn’t even have the energy to argue. Fine, go get Doc.

Nico jumped to his feet and darted toward Doc’s farm. As Bruno watched his brother run across the field, he could tell Nico had taken a nap. When all of that was over, Bruno made a promise to punch Nico for it.

Bruno looked down at the cow; her eyes opened wide, staring up at him. Though she was clearly in pain, she made no sound—docile creatures who suffered in silence, he respected that. To a hardworking man like Bruno, there was nothing worse than hearing people complain about
