The Right Spouse - Samuel A. Adetunji
book.
FOREWORD
SAMUEL A. ADETUNJI’S THE RIGHT SPOUSE is about getting the right partner in a relationship, a partner who is understanding and supportive especially during trying times. It also unveils the efforts of a man in playing the role of ‘a mother’ to his children before finally getting a mother figure in the home, who so happens to be The Right Spouse
. This book explains the need for spouses to endure hardships in their marriage. The author; Samuel A. Adetunji, writes the story intending to correct the ongoing norms of breakups, divorces, and domestic violence that have been facilitated by the lack of understanding, trust, mutual love, and care as well as anger which comes up as a result of having to get married to someone chosen by one’s parents. He asserts that marrying the right spouse could be seen as one of man’s best achievements in life. This story is a prose that is based on facts that are embedded in African societies. It also happens to be the true-life story of the writer’s close relation and this makes the biography open to more insights as it unfolds in the chapters of the book.
THE FAMILY OF MR AND MRS AKANDE
CHAPTER 1
The family of Mr. and Mrs. Akande consists of five individuals, the parents and their three children, two boys and a girl. The eldest of the children is the girl and her name is Adebimpe. The second and third children are named Ademola and Adewale respectively. Mr. and Mrs. Akande are uneducated and they both hail from the small village of Ijere in Oyo. They tend to a farm as a means of livelihood. Mr. Akande was a farmer before he got married to his wife, Joke. Joke was selected by his parents to be his wife since he was still single at the age of forty. He married her nonetheless even though she was not his choice. He was willing to put an end to his mother’s incessant complaint about his unmarried status and the need for him to give her grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Akande were able to give birth to Adebimpe, their first child, before the demise of his mother.
After the birth of Adebimpe, things were no longer rosy for them the way they were before their marriage. They toil hard on their farm year after year and sell the produce to ensure that they sponsor their daughter, Adebimpe, through her primary and secondary education. Few more years into their marriage, they gave birth to Ademola and Adewale. At the birth of these two, matters became worse since the number of mouths that need to be fed increased sporadically to five. Despite the hardship faced by them, Mr. and Mrs. Akande were able to see Ademola and Adewale through their primary and secondary school education.
Ademola, unlike the rest of his siblings, nursed the desire to further his education up to the university level. To accomplish this, he decided to raise the money to buy the form for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Examination by himself. He was able to raise the money by doing several menial works for over a year. He understood that he needed to write the exam and pass well to gain admission into a university, so Ademola created time every night to study and prepare well for his examination. He sat for his UTME and when the results were out, he had one of the best results amongst his secondary school mates. This achievement made Mrs. Bello, his school principal, to grant him the sum of #120,000 as support towards his academic pursuit. Ademola put together the grant and the remainder of his savings from his labour work and planned a trip to Ghana, where he would continue his education.
After Ademola was availed the opportunity to study in the University of George Pandmore, he thought about his sister Adebimpe who is now married to Alani, her husband (Alani is a carpenter who made and sold furniture in Lagos. Adebimpe, his wife, is a seamstress. Both of them lived in Lagos due to the nature of Alani’s work) and his brother, Adewale, the last son of the Akande’s family (Adewale learned bricklaying and was able to support his father and mother with the money he earned) and said to himself, "All these people that
