I Was a Teenage Garbageman

About this ebook
Scott Wheeling is a kid growing up in the 1980's, raised by relatives who take him in after the sudden passing of his parents. Like many kids growing up in that time, his childhood is self-centered, loosely guided, and full of freedoms unchallenged by adults. As long as he stays out of trouble, he has few expectations to meet or responsibilities to keep. That starts to change as Scott lands his first summer job as a garbage collector, and like a landfill that fills slowly over time, so does Scott's sense that life isn't all about him.
It's his job to pick up what other people are putting down, wherever they leave it, and no matter how gross.
Scott returns to his garbage-picking job over four summers until he's no longer invited back, and soon realizes the men he respects the most are the ones who are least like him. I Was a Teenage Garbageman follows Scott's growth from a "selfish prick" orphaned in the 1980's to his middle aged years trying to find his place in the world. Over a twenty year span, Scott works odd jobs in Chicago's suburbs and realizes adults behave just as badly as he did during his summer job picking up trash.
His story ends with a return visit to Swartswood State Park, where he's able to revisit and see the place he left as an irresponsible child through the eyes of an adult who is closer in age and character to the role models who inspired him.
