COVID-19 - Jie-Ming Qu
China)
Prologue
Jie-ming Qu, President, Chinese Thoracic Society
Chen Wang, President, Chinese Association of Chest Physicians
In late 2019 and early 2020, several cases of unexplained pneumonia with fever, cough, fatigue, and/or respiratory distress as the main symptoms appeared in Wuhan, China, within a short time. It was determined that the disease was caused by a new coronavirus—2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)—and the disease was correspondingly named 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19). In the early stage of the epidemic, information on the epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19, clinical treatment options, and protection of medical personnel was rapidly changing and confusing. Therefore, the Chinese Thoracic Society and Chinese Association of Chest Physicians collected and followed up on questions of close concern to frontline medical personnel, and initiated a series of lectures to answer these questions on the Respiratory Community
platform. The series of 20 lectures brought together experts in the field of respiratory and critical care medicine led by academician Chen Wang, Professor Jie-ming Qu, and experts in other professional fields closely related to the prevention and control of the epidemic, such as Professor Guang Zeng from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Looking back at the fight against epidemics in China, we can see that with the accumulation of data, the understanding of COVID-19 has become more and more in-depth and comprehensive; accordingly, the prevention and control measures and treatment protocols have been continuously adjusted and improved. In order to reproduce realistically our understanding of COVID-19 and to summarize the prevention and control experience, this book presents the highlights of the lecture series in a question-and-answer format for the benefit of medical staff and readers alike. To date, our understanding of COVID-19 is still relatively superficial, new knowledge and technologies are still being enriched, and the fight against the epidemics has entered a new phase. It is believed that the dynamic perspective on emerging diseases, especially acute respiratory infectious diseases with significant socioeconomic impact, will also shed light on future prevention and control
