    About the Author

    Padre

Jim knelt by the old creek bed, barely a trickle now after seven years of drought. He listened to the creek’s melody—its vibrancy and life had waned since he had last seen it. Now, it seemed to cling to a time he barely remembered.

The mountain remained still, heavy, and dark, as it always would be. The deer tracks stamped evidence of their existence in the moist soil where water once flowed more than five feet deep. Jim had hooked many brookies from that hole. Few anglers disturbed the water that far from town. It was too shallow now to wet a line.

Jim stared at the glistening water. Home. Memories rushed back like a waterfall. Would it remember him? He used to hunt elk just over the pass and mule deer—he had missed the mule deer most. It was all whitetails down south, down where he left Emily. He would never go back there. Too much betrayal, too many lies. He couldn’t face it anymore. He had loved her. He knew that. But forgiveness came hard for him.
