    Chapter 1

M y biological family was very happy and we were having a party at the table. This is what I can remember from when I was a little kid. When we were eating, my brother was sleeping in the dining room. When my brother was sleeping, my father told me to take my brother’s fish or food. When he woke up and started looking for his food, my pregnant mother smiled and told him that it ran away because he was sleeping. My father asked him why he would sleep when there was delicious food on the table. Then my brother saw his fish on my plate and asked, Why do I have two fish?

And I said to him, It was given to me by our father. I said, I am going to give it back; just be sure not to sleep again or else I will eat it. And when my plate was nearly empty, my father would tell me to finish all my food. They cried. I understand now that was because of their difficulty in farming and selling their harvest. I just said to my father that I would finish it as well as my brother. I always do that now. It is my habit to finish all my food all the time. As well, I do not forget them. My father is Aurelio, aka Pedro; my mother is Liwliwa, aka Lily; my brother is Ariel, aka Doro. I also was named Leo, aka Pugot, but this was changed by my brother to Pogi, which means handsome. He said that we looked alike. The one in my mom’s belly is Charina Joy, aka Karing, and that is my happy family.

The next thing I remember is going along with my mother to bring food to my father who was working on the farm. We would eat together. The dish was mongo beans, and that is one of my favourites. We would also drink cold water and breathe in the rich wind on the farm which was so good. And once the sun rose in the morning, our father would go to the farm to work. My mother said that my father was very kind to work so hard for us.

    Chapter 2

And here came the unexpected incident when my father invited Apo Ebol and they went to the fiesta of Binalonan Pangasinan to resolve their misunderstanding. At the fiesta they drank alcohol and got drunk and watched the games in the fiesta. They were late going home and they fixed the misunderstanding. And they said they were just going to go home and drink there again. In the evening when they got home, they did not have a good opportunity to drink because the single sari-sari store in our town had closed. They insisted on the sale of alcohol, but they did not want to sell alcohol anymore. They argued with the owner until the owner got very angry and he drew his gun out of hiding. My father and Apo Ebol saw the gun and ran, but unexpectedly my father was shot and Apo Ebol survived. People heard the gunfire. My Auntie Lydia went to see, and then she saw my
