David E. Gates

David E. Gates has published several books and short-stories. His first book, Access Denied, is a true story.  A deeply personal and heart-wrenching account of becoming a father and having to fight the mother and Family Courts to see his daughter and also battles against the incompetence and lies of the Child Support Agency who seem hell-bent on ruining him, emotionally and financially.. It has garnered 100% positive reviews. The Roots of Evil, his first horror novel, is a graphic, violent, intense and gore-laden horror story. His second fictional novel, The Wretched, is an original horror story set in and around Portsmouth. David has made a documentary film about the battlefield memorials in Ypres, Belgium called Ypres – The Battlefield Tours and previously wrote film reviews for Starburst and Samhain magazines and interviewed the likes of Clive Barker, Terry Pratchett, James Herbert and many others. Day One – 2nd September 2020

The car is packed and our journey, from Poole to Cornwall, for a three-day break away begins. We leave Karen’s house shortly after 10:00 which, barring any unforeseen events, should see us arrive around 15:00.

Karen bemoans my use of the sat-nav to get us there but, without a map and neither of us knowing how to get all the way there, it’s a requirement despite her protestations that it’s taking us an unusual route.

We stop on the way at a café that Karen has visited before, to stretch our legs, have a pee and a cuppa and to fix an issue with Karen’s seat. I have an Eccles cake and Karen has most of a Kit-Kat which we comment has shrunk in size since we last bought one. Either the nanny state is foisting this calorie-control upon us, or the chocolate companies are treating us like mugs reducing the size but not the price. Frankly, I’d rather pay a little extra for a full-size (as I used to know it) bar of chocolate than be short-changed on my snack!

On checking Karen’s seat, I find that the adjustments for her seat are different to mine. Once we work out how she can recline it, we start on our way again.

We listen to the radio and find Vanessa Feltz is standing in for Jeremy Vine on Radio Two’s midday show. A guy is being interviewed in respect of his bench reviews. It seems he’s travelled to more than a hundred-and-eighty benches and given each a grade between one and ten!

Do some people have nothing better to do? I ask.

On almost every response he gives to Vanessa’s questions, he starts with If I’m honest... After the third or fourth utterance, we are both in hysterics every time he speaks and uses the phrase. I make a comment that if his name were Mark, it would be perfect, as the scores would be a benchmark, but it turns out his name is Steve.

Karen suggests that we stop for lunch at Holsworthy, which is not too far from our destination so I come off the dual-carriageway and head towards the little town which is some nineteen miles away from the point we left the main route.

We finally arrive and park up in the car park near the church. We use the toilets nearby and take photos of the church and Karen reminds me
