Invisible People for Hire - Louis Pickett
Author’s Preface
Sam Hennessey, my editor, has suggested that I write a preface to my book. As I compose this preface, I have not yet completed what will be my debut novel, Invisible People for Hire. A labour of love 18 months in the making.
I would like to start by emphasising that I am a previously unpublished author. I approach this task with much trepidation. I do not have formal training as an author. The only subject at university I have completed related to writing was ‘Editing for Publication’. It was a course that I found mildly insightful but in the end unsatisfying. My training comes from research, and that research is reading. I read books every day. Books that are on the New York Times bestsellers list and books I find covered in a thin layer of dust at the local library. I have read books without ceasing for as long as I can remember. My interest in writing began when I was in primary school. I would often write short stories and the occasional poem as a way to express feelings and emotions.
That is all to say it was not my education or writing experience that made me attractive to a publisher. I am still mystified that a publisher would request and pay an advance (small as it may be) for a work from a completely unknown author. Maybe that’s just the state of the creative market at the moment?
This novel is about people trying to achieve things. The characters have objectives which they are struggling to achieve. I think it is true that there is something we all want to achieve in life. I hope that message comes across in this novel. I hope it will be a piece which readers will finish with a sense of immense satisfaction. I would much rather have a book which is satisfying to read, rather than a Harry Potter which sells millions of copies. The publisher may feel differently, but I will leave it up to Sam Hennessey to decide how to attract readers to this book.
I don’t know if it’s somewhat needy to ask, but if you read and enjoyed this novel, please leave a good review wherever you purchased this novel. That is only if you think this novel deserves praise. If it doesn’t match your expectations, leave a negative review and I will think carefully about what you have to say. [Editor’s Note: Please don’t leave a
