Obliteration - Darren Azim
Chapter 1 - Obliteration
The skies were painted blue, accompanied by a fluff of clouds, as the sun shone down bright upon the city. Trees with shining red apples, finally exposed to the sunlight. The sweet smell of freshly cut grass filled the air as city community workers poured sprinkles of water on the blooming flowers.
Streets were crowded by a diverse set of people. Salarymen talked on their phones discussing as they walked to their workplaces. Schoolchildren walked together alongside their parents, as couples or groups, carrying backpacks.
Cars, vans, trucks, and buses drove through the streets and stopped to allow people to cross over. Trains stopped to allow others to exit or enter. Taxis were hailed and stopped by the pavement, empty roads and local shopping areas began to slowly populate with people and cars.
Their day was neither better nor worse than others; it was perfectly normal. The sun remained the same as always, the air as per usual. The smell of the city never changes, and time always pushes forward.
Then, an explosion with a grey cloud of ash and concrete reached for the sky. A nearby area battered to its foundation. In the blink of an eye, nearby television screens switched to an emergency broadcast, as police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, news vans and helicopters rushed to the scene of the disaster. The televisions reported:
A monster spotted in the blast zone, all civilians must evacuate!
, it announced, Our heroes Battery Man and Spelunker have been found knocked out, more heroes will arrive shortly!
Within the blast crater, the air filled with the cries of woes from its victims, a brown-humanoid monster, with a pair of antennae emerging from its head and its back covered with an exoskeleton, rose from the swarm of dust. Its face was elongated with a pair of small circular black eyes, unfazed by the destruction as it looked around for its next victim. Further, into the crater, a little girl cried in distress. Her tears dropped to the soil as she cried for her parents, guardians, or anyone, to come to the rescue.
Mama!
, she sobbed, with hands covering her eyes, Papa! Where are you?
Unfortunately for her, the monster discovered her first. It reached out to her head with its arm. The moment his arm reached her, it grew five times the size, with veins unusually protruding and beating. Its nails sharpened to the point where it could cut steel. The monster smiled sadistically.
Vermin.
He said as he clenched his palm.
Suddenly the girl was saved by an unknown force. The monster stared at his hand in complete confusion. How could he have missed such an easy target? He pinpointed where the force went and discovered none other than a hero. A hero in dark crimson and navy blue, adorned with a golden symbol of a laser, wearing a helmet with a singular horn emerging from the top.
