Perjured Innocence - Shelley L. Levisay

    Chapter 1

His palms were sweaty , and his heartbeat echoed through his ears in the packed courtroom. The jurors filed in, their expressions sour. The foreman, who was a modern-day Mrs. Kravitz, told the judge they had reached a verdict. The pounding in his ears was deafening as the clerk began to read the verdict form, We the jury, in the State versus Jack Lewis in CF-2018-742 on the sole charge of Murder in the First Degree, find the Defendant Guilty and set punishment at life. His legs became weak and his hands grasped the table to stop him from falling, but before he could even process, the deputies were cuffing his hands behind his back. The judge and his lawyer both made other announcements, but he kept screaming I didn’t do it! I’m innocent! Somebody helps me! The guards removed him quickly.

    SIX MONTHS LATER

The rain seeps through the ceiling and lands on his head as he sits on the hard mat covered by a threadbare sheet and a blanket that would rip right in two if he tugged on it with any force. The rancid smell of ammonia coming from the broken toilet just inches away permeates his nostrils. Jack Lewis, a skinny, lanky guy with glasses, shivers alone in the cold of that holding cell wallowing in disbelief at his predicament. Worse than the conditions is the pain in his heart from being alone again. He survived eight foster homes before he turned eighteen and finally had a family when he married the sensational Angelina. He thought his heart would explode when Angelina gave birth to their son
