    Chapter 1

Like most of our get-togethers, the grading party was my idea. The end of the term is coming, and all of us were behind in our grading.

I have thirty essays still to grade on the importance of why you can’t use morning dew as a substitute for frost in spells, I’d grumbled, slowly spinning in my desk chair.

The essays are the worst, Emmeline agreed, reading a true crime book. Given that fae are notorious for not having a moral compass, her reading choices are always a little disturbing.

Naturally, I couldn’t abide the fact that she wasn’t suffering with me, so I decided to host a grading party two days before grades were due. That way, everyone (read: I) would be productive, and everyone would be miserable together.

    It’s working.

How’s the grading coming, guys? Willow pipes up after a ten-minute stint of silence. I latch onto the distraction.

It sucks, I say with finality. "These kids don’t know how to use punctuation. What are they teaching in the English courses?"

Hey, don’t knock the English teachers. They’ve got a lot to cover, Ben says. Ugh. Ben. He’s sitting across from me in the library in our rented conference room, because working in our classrooms is too distracting, and working in one of our dorms or a cafe would be worse.

He leans near me to grab a paper. I can feel myself sniffling.

Out of our little group, Ben
