    INTRODUCTION

This 112th edition of the Shooter’s Bible is the most recent version of the annual, ultimate firearms reference book. It’s the trusted source for millions of people who want information on new firearms, ammunition, optics, and accessories, as well as current prices and specs for thousands of in-production firearms. Since 1925, when it was first published, more than seven million copies of the Shooter’s Bible have been sold. The Shooter’s Bible is the most trusted source for complete information on every firearm on the market today.

    Browning X-Bolt Max Target/Varmint

As an overview, this past year was proving to be a relatively uneventful year for firearms sales in the United States . . . until COVID-19 reared its ugly head. Many companies were having some flat years, to the point where the introduction of new models of firearms had been put on hold. No more. According to a spokesperson of the National Shooting Sports Foundation: Sales of firearms in 2020 were unlike any other year. Customers were driven to retailers early and often with many factors driving the surge. The COVID-19 pandemic, empty grocery shelves, protests, looting, and riots, as well as calls to defund police departments, all contributed to high demand at gun stores across the country. The heavily polarized national elections only added to the hysteria and, when the dust settles, 2020 will go down as a year to be remembered for its record firearm purchases. The really good news is that retailers reported seeing more customers purchasing their first gun in 2020 than at any other time in the past, so a main emphasis for 2021 should be reaching out to this new crop of gun owners with messages of firearms safety, training, and invitations to explore and participate in recreational shooting sports.

To meet anticipated future demand, firearms manufacturers are also continuing to come out with some new products, some of which are getting popular acclaim.

Long-range rifles continue to be all the rage, with new models coming out from Browning (the X-Bolt Max Long Range), Remington (the CDL SR Limited Edition), Savage (110 Precision), and Weatherby (Mark V Accumark Elite), among others. SIG has a new bolt-action that is both a hunter and precision shooter, while Marlin has evolved its lever-action rifle into the twenty-first century with a new Dark Model. Glock introduced a new rimfire pistol, while Colt has brought back the revered Python. The trend in riflescopes is more magnification power, with many new 8X models for long-range shooting. Many entry level scopes now have features you would expect on high-end glass. In optics, red dots for concealed carry pistols make shooting pistols easier.

    The classic Colt Python

As you’ll read in Robert Sadowski’s new product report, Guns and Optics 2021, beginning on page 6, all of these new introductions and more are examined in detail. And how about some groundbreaking books on firearms? In the past eighteen months, Skyhorse has published some solid, readable, and useful titles. One we are proud of is Gunsmithing Modern Firearms—A Gun Guy’s Guide to Making Good Guns Even Better by Bryce Towsley. Towsley offers detailed explanations and includes color illustrations for just about every aspect of gun modification, builds, and repair. Featured tutorials include how to customize a Glock, build a 1911 handgun or an AR-15 rifle from parts, do spray-on gun coatings, build a precision or hunting rifle from scratch, and much more.

But that’s not the only book we’re pleased with. Take Handgun Hunting—A Comprehensive Guide to Choosing and Using the Right Firearms for Big and Small Game by skilled hunter and writer Kat Ainsworth. As Ainsworth says, hunting with handguns has seen a huge growth in popularity in recent years, with hunters from all walks of life picking up the sport. Ainswoorth examines all the game one can hunt in North America. In each chapter, she touches upon such topics as the habits and habitats of each game animal, recommended firearms and cartridges, techniques and tactics, the importance of proper shot placement, and game edibility. The author also gets into skills and drills, care and maintenance of the different platforms, plus the pros and cons of various holsters and scabbards.

In Great Hunting Rifles, Terry Wieland, shooting editor of Gray’s Sporting Journal and a recognized authority on fine firearms, leads the reader on a journey through the history of some of the most exquisite rifles made in the twentieth century.

The rifles featured in the book, all owned by the author and described in loving detail, were chosen for their particular importance. Each rifle either represents a particular era of gun making, is historically important, or is simply a paragon of gun making skill. In his treatment of these special rifles, Wieland provides a close look at some individual guns that are superb in a unique way, and which illustrate high points of the twentieth century. Each chapter is dedicated to one particular rifle, and is accompanied by photographs of the author’s own examples.

If you own or are looking to buy currently produced firearms, then you’ll want to check out the existing products section in the Shooter’s Bible, starting on page 113. Here is where you’ll find every firearm currently in production, with current prices and specs. If you have a gun that isn’t in this section, it is probably out of production, in which case you need to pick up another Skyhorse publication, the Gun Trader’s Guide. The forty-second edition came off the presses at the same time this edition of the Shooter’s Bible did.

The Skyhorse staff is proud of this newest edition of the Shooter’s Bible, a book that has been continually updated and fact checked for the past twelve months. Now that this 112th edition is off the presses, we’re already starting to work on the 113th edition. It’s an ongoing process, one we have to stay on top of and pay close attention to, given all the changes going on in the world of firearms.

    GUNS AND OPTICS 2021

    By Robert A. Sadowski

Long-range rifles for both hunting and precision shooting remain popular, with versions from Browning, Remington, Thompson/Center, and more. SIG unveiled a new bolt-action that is both a hunter and precision shooter. Marlin has gone dark as it evolves the lever-action rifle into the twenty-first century. I was invited to the launch of the G44 when Glock shocked the shooting world with the introduction of a rimfire pistol. And, yes, wait for it, Colt has reissued its iconic Python; I just tested the 6-inch model. The trend in rifle scopes is more magnification, with many new 8X models for long-range shooting. Also, many entry-level scopes have features you would expect on high-end glass. The other popular new products are red dot optics for concealed-carry pistols, which make shooting pistols easier and don’t add much extra bulk when carrying concealed.
