    DEDICATION

I am so pleased and impressed with this body of work my husband, Benjamin, graciously wrote. He is a professional writer and a psychic medium himself, so he gets me. His writing is a joyous and valued aspect I never saw as an integral part to my work. He has been instrumental in helping to put my thoughts into an understandable and succinct way, authoring my previous book Compassionate Messenger: True Stories From A Psychic Medium and all of my Blogs on www.carolynmolnar.com. Thank you for willingly sharing your talent. It is a treasured gift from my best friend and spouse. I love you.

To my wonderful grown children, who have put up with our psychic household since they were birthed onto this planet. They have been instrumental in teaching me kindness, patience, understanding and compassion. (I am a Taurus, you know.) Otherwise, they would be in my face about it! Thank you for being my relentless and greatest teachers and helping me be a better person and steward of this work. I love you two beyond words. Thank you for being in my life.

I also dedicate this book to my mentor, adopted mother and great friend, the late Reverend Sadie Nickerson. Without her 20 years of patience and understanding, I would not be here today. She is still in my life as my spirit-ual advisor. I know there are few missteps with her guidance – she wouldn't tolerate it. (She DEMANDED I put her last on the pecking order with this dedication. She felt it is best... geez, I hear you loud and clear, Sadie!) I love and respect all you stand for, Sadie – truth, justice and the Canadian way!

    FOREWORD

    Prepare yourself for something amazing.

Over the three years I spent researching my book Medium 7: Evidence of the Afterlife and Predictions, a scientific examination of life-after-death communication, I observed dozens of mediums. I studied them in different situations: in Spiritualist churches giving messages to congregations, at self-sponsored events where they charged admission fees, and in one-on-one sittings in their offices. Their work ran the gamut from yawn-stifling ho-hum to jaw-dropping Wow! I can’t believe it!

I found Carolyn Molnar belonged to the latter group. She was – and still is – one of the strongest mediums I have ever met. I observed her work at Spiritualist churches in Toronto, where in her message work she linked with spirit to bring through names and provide key details that were known only to those she spoke with. (Much was verified afterward, when I spoke with those she had brought messages to.) Intrigued and impressed, I realized she was the kind of medium I wanted to study and test, to determine if mediums actually connected with those in a different dimension.

Now, many years after my study was published, Carolyn has written a fascinating book about her life journey from precocious youngster to respected medium and teacher. Those who exhibit gifts like Carolyn’s can tell us a lot about what happens to us after our physical death. Carolyn’s life and philosophy about mediumship and the spirit world will engage you, entice you, educate you, and challenge your ideas of what is humanly possible. And I can also guarantee you will get a laugh now and then.

Whether you are an experienced medium or are tangentially fascinated by the subject, you will enjoy her honesty and wit.

And you will feel good for having read her words.

Why is that last line important? Because, interestingly, while I was determined to learn about the afterlife through mediumship, I also learned that the best mediums gave their clients and listeners hope. Indeed, that is one of Carolyn’s strict rules: Always leave a person with hope, that our friends and loved ones that have passed on are always there to guide us, love us and empower us any way they can.

I was fortunate to read an early draft of this book, and I loved the story of how she was able to convince a pregnant woman who just lost her husband from a gunshot wound that he was still with her in spirit, and that he indeed would be there for the birth of their child. I was also moved to read about a mother who was comforted to hear from her daughter, who had accidentally taken her own life. Imagine what comfort these people felt, knowing their loved ones could still support them from a higher place. Hope is a great thing and Carolyn brings this message in her book.

There’s one more reason why WHAT?! You’re A Medium?! is a book for now. It was written during a historic time. Historic because we are moving from the selfish world of me, me and just me, into a world where we, we and we all realize we are part of one being.

Why is this important? Because we are all in this together.

Plus, this is a time to feel free and create without limits. Which also makes this a time to recognize, embrace and accept mediums like Carolyn Molnar, whose gifts of intuition and mediumship are better understood, because the veil between our world and the next is growing thinner by the day.

Now get a comfortable spot, start reading and see how Carolyn’s book brings hope, knowledge and insight into our everyday lives. What an honour it is to write the foreword to this new book.

    INTRODUCTION

In a dusky bar filled with theatre types drinking their pints while noisily chatting among themselves, I nervously whispered a quick prayer: Y’know what? If you want me to do this, I’ll do it. If you don’t want me to do it, I won’t do it. Getting chosen has no hold over me.

    Immediately, I felt calmer.

Then, about half an hour later, my name was called. And I screamed.

Let’s start this story at the beginning. Several years ago, my second husband, Benjamin (sometimes I’ll call him H2), emailed an application to the Toronto Fringe Theatre Festival. He wanted to stage his play-in-progress Voices of Hospice, a series of monologues created from his interviews with hospice workers. Organizers use a lottery system to choose from the pool of applicants who gets to present their piece during the festival. Typically, about 700 individuals and theatre companies compete for about 100 spots in various categories, and plays are performed in various locations in downtown Toronto.

During lunch one day, Benjamin said, You ought to apply, too. Your Spirit Inspired Messages events, where you deliver messages from spirit, are like theatre. You could do a one-woman show.

I rolled my eyes, gave him a Nahhhhh, and reached for the salad bowl. I’m not an actor, and what I do isn’t theatre. What I do is real.

Of course, he said. But think of it this way – you could reach a group of people who normally wouldn’t go to one of your events. You’d be introducing them to mediumship and spirit in a new way.

I mumbled something while crunching a piece of fresh kale.

After a few more days of I dare you little speeches, I sighed and gave in. Oh, the sacrifices we make sometimes to pacify our partners.

While filling in the online application form, I hit a snag and called H2 into my office.

They’re asking for the name of my theatre company. What should I call myself? I asked him.

He thought a moment. How about ‘Compassionate Messenger’?

That makes me sound like a delivery service.

    How about ‘Psychic Medium Productions’?

I chuckled, typed it in, hit send, and my application for a 90-minute production went into the electronic ether.

Fast forward to December: The lottery drawing for spots was held at the Tranzac Club, a bar that catered to the creative crowd. I was given a number as I walked through the door, then entered a room that could have been the setting for a production of Cabaret. Walls painted black made the dimly lit room seem even darker. Black-topped square wood tables ringed by four folding chairs. The place was quickly filling up, so Benjamin and I staked a claim at an unoccupied table. A few minutes later, someone asked if he could take the extra two chairs and before we could answer, they were whisked away.

    You’re welcome, I said.

I liked the energy of the room, but as a Taurus, I felt out of place. My husband, a Leo, loved it. People flitting from table to table gave each other hugs while ribbons of gossip and laughter floated through the air. It seemed like everyone knew everyone. And they probably did. I felt more like an audience member than a participant in this show. These folks probably knew every Shakespeare play by heart and talked stage directions like it was their secret language.

The host for the evening strode onto the stage at the front of the room and did a couple minutes of inside-theatre jokes to get the night going. People who won performance slots should go to the back of the room and get their pictures taken for the Fringe website, he said. Everyone else was invited to stay afterward and feed their sorrows with a piece of consolation cake.

The first group of performers to be picked were dance troupes. Benjamin went to the bar for a whiskey. I was too anxious to even drink a cranberry juice. Do I want to do this? asked the voice on my left shoulder, while the whisper in my right ear countered with, It might be fun.

    Fun? It would be terrifying!

The host began calling lottery numbers for the 90-minute performance slots. I started fiddling with my fingers. About 160 applications were vying for 10 spots, he said, as he reached into a box and began announcing the winning numbers. Excited people popped up from their seats and ran to the back of the room. Applause, applause, and plenty of congratulatory hugs. More numbers were called. Benjamin sipped his whiskey and I sat back in my chair. More numbers, more whoops of happiness. I closed my eyes and whispered to spirit my version of Thy will be done.

The tenth and last spot is number… The host squinted as he called my number, then shouted, Psychic Medium Productions!

I jumped up and screamed. WHOOOOOOOO! I was in!

I ran among the tables, dodging dodgy thespian drinkers who threw me looks like they were trying to figure out who I was. I ignored them all. I was going to get my picture taken. I did it!

And then I felt a little scratch of panic. Oh, my God, what have I gotten myself into?

The rest of the evening passed like a dizzy thought. Autumn, the Fringe’s communications director, snapped a photo of me holding a sign saying Psychic Medium Productions. She asked me where were the other members of my theatre company and why had I chosen such an odd name?

You’re looking at my theatre company, I said. And I’m a psychic medium.

She did a theatrical double-take. "Really?’

Really. I’m going to give people readings.

After another look of surprise, her cherubic face brightened with an eager smile. This kind of play has never been done in the history of the Fringe, she said. You’re the first!

My first performance was six months away, but I was already giddy with excitement.

I think your production will do really well. She fiddled with the camera lens and snapped a picture. I bet a lot of people will be interested in this.

As Benjamin and I walked out of the club, I couldn’t feel my feet touching the ground. I made it! They picked me! I thanked spirit for giving me this chance to do something new with my work.

I stayed silent on the bus ride home, having conversations in my head about how I needed to prepare for my premier. I compiled mental lists of people to contact, things I’d talk about, and what I’d wear onstage.

Then it hit me. Oh my God, this project was HUGE!

Was I just going to fill 90 minutes with messages from spirit?

What if I got audiences of non-believers heckling me?

I grabbed my husband’s arm like a drowning person reaching for a lifeboat. You’re going to help me with this, right?

Don’t worry about it. Just give readings.

No. I want it to be something more than that. I want to talk about making mediumship normal. Being a psychic medium is actually quite normal. I was a soccer mom who was also a psychic medium. I want to tell my story and have some fun with it.

Stories flashed through my mind. Like how I almost died while I was being born. The time I touched a ghostly hand. Haunted hotel rooms. My close encounter with a UFO. How I refused a $1,000,000 challenge to test my ability. The Ukrainian reality show that wanted me to compete against a psychic who claimed he could cause storms. Why the biggest Spiritualist centre in America banished me. And the many memorable and wonderful and crazy and sad and empowering readings I’ve given.

And best of all, the people whose jaws dropped when I told them what I did for a living.

The title of my play flew out of my mouth: WHAT?! You’re a Medium?!

And as the TTC bus carried me home, I began to think … Yes, I really have had an interesting life…

    PART I

    WHO I AM

    CHAPTER 1

Why I Am Who I Am

    (Maybe)

A note to astrologers: I’m a Taurus, rising sign Libra, moon sign Capricorn. On my chart, my planets look like all the pool balls scattered over the table. One astrologer told me I had the most difficult chart he’d ever seen. This could explain why when it comes to the lottery, I only win a free ticket once in awhile.

    Séances at my grandparents’ house

While I may not know the meaning of life, I think I understand why I chose to be born into my family.

Oscar and Ann Epstein, my maternal grandparents, left Czechoslovakia before World War II, just as waves of anti-Semitism were washing over Eastern Europe. They came to Montreal and, once settled, helped several Jewish families escape the Holocaust by sponsoring them to come to Canada. This entailed giving money to the government to take care of them until they could make it on their own. In some circles, Oscar was considered a war hero.

Oscar was a barber, Ann was a hairdresser, and they worked out of their home. Here’s where their story starts getting interesting. One of Ann’s clients was Jenny Wilder, the medium for Prime Minister Mackenzie King, a devout Spiritualist, who served from 1935-48.

I wish I could have met Jenny – she seemed like a hoot. According to stories I heard, she would walk down the street talking to someone no one else could see, and march through hallways swatting the air as if trying to push something away. Sometimes she would even cry out, Stay back! Get out of here! She was so turned on to spirit people, I don’t think she knew how to turn it off. Or, perhaps, she never cared to.

King used Jenny and other mediums to connect with his mother, who he was very devoted to. And perhaps he also asked the spirit world for advice on how to run the country. Who knows? This could be the reason why Canadians are such a spirited people.

Jenny held monthly trumpet séances in my grandparents’ dining room. Though King never attended these sessions, some of them were pretty loud, according to their daughter Liz – my mother – who used to complain about having to clean the ectoplasm stains on the chairs the next day.

Whoa! Let me back up the truck and explain a few things:

Spiritualism is the belief that death is just a transition, and the soul not only continues on after our passing, but that loved ones, friends and even long-lost acquaintances who have passed into spirit are available to help and support us through life – if we welcome it. Spiritualism is a recognized religion in Canada, and as of this writing there are close to 100 Spiritualist churches, temples, and prayer and meditation circles that meet in churches, storefronts and in people’s houses from British Colombia to Newfoundland.

A séance involves physical mediumship, as opposed to mental mediumship, which is what I do. With mental mediumship, a medium connects to the energy of the spirit world through her mind. Physical mediumship involves the medium sharing her life force (ectoplasm – something we all have) with spirit so spirit can manifest in a way that helps them enter our realm. We recognize the energetic presence of spirit when we hear a voice that seems to come out of the air, or a scent, or experiencing a sensation like being touched when we know no one is physically there. Depending on the strength of the physical medium’s connection with spirit, sitters at a séance might also experience levitating objects, or find apports (objects brought to the séance by spirit from elsewhere) or, the rarest of phenomena, a materialized presence of someone in the spirit world.

A trumpet séance is another form of physical mediumship. The trumpet is a metallic cone that stands about 3 feet high. There is a small opening at the top and a larger opening at the bottom. The trumpet is used to amplify spirit voices. In some cases, spirit can cause apports to appear under the bottom of the trumpet: simple items like buttons, small flowers or coins. Other times, the medium will use his life force to make the trumpet float around the room. I’ve been to several so-called physical mediumship séances, and only one physical medium has been able to demonstrate a truly wondrous trumpet
