Il mio primo incontro con i Nativi Americani fu nel 1993, a Milano, ad una manifestazione che ospitava un vero e proprio accampamento teepee di Lakota, guidati da Birgil Kills Straight, leader tradizionalista Oglala Lakota.
Il mio cuore di tredicenne già batteva per gli Indiani d’America: Cavallo Pazzo, Toro Seduto e Nuvola Rossa, i canti tradizionali, il suono dei tamburi di pelle di bisonte con telaio in legno, che porta con sé il battito di Madre Terra e il richiamo degli spiriti. La mia passione era nata con Tex Willer, il famoso personaggio Ranger Navajo che sta dalla parte dei Nativi, con i libri sui grandi capi Indiani e con i film che hanno alimentato la mia ammirazione per i Lakota e gli spazi immensi delle praterie americane. Da quelle letture sono nati il senso di responsabilità per l'ambiente, il rispetto nei confronti delle Popolazioni Native e il senso di spiritualità che ancora oggi mantiene solido il mio percorso. E proprio con Tex, che ad oggi fa parte della mia quotidianità lavorativa, sento di aver raggiunto il sogno di bambino; il desiderio di poter raccontare per immagini le avventure che mi tenevano sveglio la notte, con i grandi e saggi capi, i guerrieri a difesa delle loro famiglie e territori dalla minaccia dell'Uomo Bianco.
Ma le tribù Native — Lakota, Cheyenne, Crow, Apache e tutte le Nazioni indigene d’America — non potranno mai essere rinchiuse in visioni romanzate o di pura cronaca storica, perché potrebbe essere riduttivo o fuorviante. L’Arte di chi conosce lo spirito Lakota può raccontarci qualcosa di più sul fascino immortale degli Indiani d'America. È per me quindi un'occasione speciale e un onore poter introdurre le eccellenti opere di Jim Yellowhawk, come è un onore aver incontrato Raffaella Milandri, membro onorario di due tribù indiane e cara amica; il mio più sentito ringra-ziamento va a lei, per i suoi libri sulle popolazioni indigene del mondo — tra cui Lessico Lakota e Gli ultimi Guerrieri, editi da Mauna Kea — e per il suo attivismo per i diritti umani dei Popoli Indigeni. Tex mi ha portato qui, ha mantenuto vivo in me il senso di giustizia e di avventura ed ora tutto si completa.
