    Climb Jack Climb - A. E. Berbres

    Chapter 1

    He... He's dead... He's dead! I'm safe. I'm safe I'M SAFE WE'RE SAFE!!

I felt my tears running down my face and I lay down, clutching my knees. My sobs made my body convulse and I pressed my face into the ground, the smell of grass and soil consumed and dulled my brain.

I was only able to whisper that we're safe over and over again as I sobbed. At least until a voice startled me.

    Hello there.

I sat up abruptly and was temporarily blinded by the sun when I looked behind me. Slowly I saw the silhouette of a woman becoming clearer as she walked towards me. For some reason, she stopped in front of me.

A hood covered most of her face. I looked closer and saw that she was dressed in... short... pants?

Oh no. A harlot, mother warned me. I must escape-

    wHAT DID YOU CALL ME?!

I jumped back, my limbs shaking, I was barely able to croak out the words:

    N-no. I didn't mean. Y-your clothes.

So just because- The woman started shaking her head and massaging the bridge of her nose, just like mother dis when she was angry at me. -I'm wearing shorts, I'm a prostitute trying to trick you? She sighed My hope, child... you have a lot to learn.

    I- I'm sure I do.

    She thinks I'm dumb too.

She stopped moving. Fearing that I've angered her I blurt out "I apologise for hurting you... although, I don't remember saying it out loud?" I posed this question more to myself than to her but:

    You didn't.

I tilted my head and suddenly my brain was chugging at a very slow pace.

I read your mind. I'm a mage. It's one of the easiest spells. she said curtly.

I- You know what? I shift my position so i'm leaning backwards with my arms crossed. All right. I give up.

    Huh?

I just saw a giant, from a kingdom above the skies- I gestured upwards and to the giant's corpse, to try and emphasise my point. "...fall down off of a giant beanstalk and die and maybe crush some people I love. You being a mage, honestly isn't too much to process."

She smiled faintly at this Fair enough....

She walked round so we were facing each other again.

Speaking of that kingdom. Did you get the chance to explore it?

I- Not much, aside from when I.... shall we say, procured some of the giant's items.

She swept her hair back All right, so you barely got to see anything while you were robbing the giant?

    Well I wouldn't call it-

Do you want to go up there again? Her tone betrays her growing excitement. Get the greatest treasure known to man?

I was taken aback- I wasn't expecting anything other than a scolding and the amount of treasure I had already gotten....

There's something better than that? There was one problem though...

I don't see how I could, what with me just having chopped down the bean stalk and all.

She walked to my side and knelt down, and I was finally able to make out the rest of her face. It was plain, but her eyes had a kindness and light that made her seem radiant.

    Do you want to?

I didn't know how to react to this question. On one hand, what if there were more
