    Midtown High - Randy Pence

    CHAPTER ONE

    MIDTOWN HIGH

The girl sat quietly in her mother’s fancy car. She could sense the enragement in her mother due to the manner at which she drove and how she blasted other motorists on the highway, especially one who had almost run into them. They soon arrived home and got into the house. Mother and daughter stared earnestly at one another, ostensibly short of words.

I am highly disappointed in you Amanda Mary suddenly yelled. Mary is Amanda’s mother. There it was the anger that had been building up inside of her. All through the drive home, she had been silent but she knew the situation at hand required less silence and more action.

    It’s not my fault mom

Those douche bags provoked me to anger and I had to retaliate Amanda defended herself.

You had to retaliate Mary made a face.

    Mom, come on

You know what? I can’t do this right now. I have to get back to work

We’ll continue this conversation when I return from work Mary pecked her daughter lightly and walked out of the house. Amanda Watson is the sole child of Mary Watson. Her father was late; he died of cancer few years back and it had just been her and Mary ever since. Mary never really got over the death of the husband. Even in death, she loved him too much to move on with another man. Amanda is 17 years old and in twelfth grade. She was endowed with a delicate mysterious beauty which made boys her age regard her as a freshly blossoming flower. She had the physique of a model. Whenever she walked down the neighborhood, boys always stared like they had seen an angel who had descended from the heavens. On one or two occasions, they made attempts to woo her but she turned them down. Amanda had no time for boys; she was only interested in her books, love for music and her dream of becoming a model. Aside being beautiful and brainy, Amanda was as tough as nails. She was not one to be easily intimidated or messed with. This quality often got her into trouble and subsequently led to her expulsion from school. Mary was pretty occupied at work when a call came in from Amanda’s school principal, inviting her to the school.

‘Your daughter has committed a grave offence’, he had declared over the phone. It was soon discovered that Amanda had gotten into a fight with two boys and broke one’s arm with a chair. Though it came as a surprise to many students that a girl could single-handedly take on two boys, it was no news to Mary for she knew how resilient her daughter can be. Amanda on the other hand felt little or no remorse for her actions. Prior to the incident, the boys she assaulted constantly oppressed and got on her nerves. She cared not about the aftermath of her actions; she just needed to put them in her place. Later in the day, Mary returned from work. She got into the kitchen and fixed herself a glass of juice.

Hi mom! Amanda greeted. Mary ignored the salutation.

Come on mom; are you still mad at me?

    Oh you have no idea

    I’m sorry?

Sorry doesn’t cut it young lady

I’ve got good news by the way said Mary.

    What is it?

Get yourself prepared. You are to commence school next week Smanda stared at her mom in a fit of disarray. She was absolutely certain that her school wanted nothing to do with her no more and vice-versa. Why then would her mother go back there to plead on her behalf?

    I’m not going back mom

    I’m done with that school

Who said anything about going back to your old school?

    Huh?

I made inquiries about other schools and I was directed to Midtown High Mary declared.

Midtown High? Never heard of that one

    Well now you do

What if I don’t wanna go to any school around? I really wanna leave this city mom

We talked about this Amanda. We can’t leave. I can’t quit my job

    You’ll get a new one

It’s not that simple Mary then moved closer to her daughter and held her face.

Listen to me sweetheart, it’s been tough doing this without your father but I have been successful on my own thus far and i am  thankful for that

I’m thankful that I’ve got you. We got to understand each other baby

From my findings, Midtown High is a good school. You’ll get to make new friends, new cheer-leading group. You’ll even meet a new boy Mary laughed.

    Oh please! Boys are losers

How did you meet dad again? mother and daughter laughed.

    Alright mom. I’ll go

And please, no more fighting. Promise me

    But mom, they...

    Promise me Amanda

    I promise

    That’s my girl

    I love you mom

I love you pumpkin they embraced. After her heart to heart talk with her mother, Amanda had no other choice but to comply with her demands. For no particular reason, she had distaste for Midtown High; a school she was yet to see. Hell, the school must probably be full of losers just like her old school. In the last few months, Amanda had been transferred to two different schools and Midtown High was to be her third. Mary
