The Nickname is actually the second chapter of my second book DEADEYE. I am currently rewriting my first book RESCUE ISLAND, and also working on a murder mystery set on Okinawa, Japan in the 1990’s.

I hope you enjoy this story, it is about a family living in central Missouri, and is set at a time surrounding the Civil War. The story is fiction, and may take some liberties when it comes to historical accuracies. This story is strictly for the purpose of entertainment, and is not intended to dispute or undermine any of the actual events of this era. The actions of the characters in this story are not meant to undermine any of the Americans who lived in these turbulent times, and any similarities between my characters and those who lived at this time is coincidental. I have nothing but respect for those who lost their lives creating our great country. I believe that those who fought and died in all of battles of this era, helped make the United States the great country that it is today.

    The Nickname

Grandpa tell me the story again. A young boy on the eve of his tenth birthday, and full of wonder, sets on the floor. He is anxiously waiting for the older man to light his pipe.

Don’t you ever get tired of telling those stories? The young boy’s mother adds from her chair squinting to sew by the lamplight.

Dad I wish you wouldn’t fill his head with all those stories of war and glory. Includes the boy’s father, who is setting at the table carving on a piece of walnut, that is slowly taking the shape of a gun stock.

It’s good for the boy to know his history. Grandpa George answers. Grandpa George was quite a sight, with his long grey beard and hair. He was not a tall man, and his large belly made him look even shorter. The years of seemingly endless battles had stolen his youth many years ago. Grandpa George’s final battle took the use of his right leg, this was what ended his career as a soldier and sent him to live with Thomas.

Thomas Roark the young boy’s father, is a well known gun smith. People come from all over the country to have Thomas work on their guns.

Anna the boy’s mother, was raised by her father (Grand Pa Elk) as her mother died just days after Anna was born. Anna’s mother was white so Grand Pa Elk did all that he could to see that Anna understood both cultures.
