Dee's Dastardly Diaries - Deirdre Moses

    SHADOW FOR A DAY

I EASED SLOWLY PASSED the address, peering up the driveway. My initial relief from not seeing his car parked outside immediately transcended into shock and grief as I saw it partially concealed in front of hers, outside the garage.

I sat for a brief moment, just staring, wide-eyed, in total disbelief. I then idled the small rental car down the road and parked as inconspicuously as I could.

My heart was beating so loudly I could hear it and feel it pulsating up my neck and into my temples, where it throbbed painfully. Then the shakes started. I held my trembling hands over my mouth as I grappled with the searing pain shooting through my chest. My stomach, knotted with nerves, was now threatening to eject my morning coffee all over the dashboard.

Of course, I had my suspicions. I had heard the rumours. I had noticed the hushed phone calls in the night. I had woken on my own more and more frequently as the supposed boys’ nights ended with him crashing at a mate’s place.

I had rightly suspected who the whore was. His boss, how original. So, of course, she was able to cover for him when he worked late, and the constant calls from her were easily explained away as work issues.

I knew Matt and I had drifted apart over the years. There was very little left in our marriage compared to the heady, passionate times we had shared throughout our earlier years together. I guess I knew he was just hanging in there for the pay off. I was to inherit my fathers’ extensive property portfolio when he passed. I was the only child and we shared a close relationship. It was only a matter of time before Dad succumbed to his illness and I became a multi-millionaire.

I had resigned myself to the fact that I had to know for sure. My only hope was to be his shadow for the day. And here I was, slumped over the steering wheel of my rental car, heaving with pained sobs that wracked my body.

I had seen enough. I drove back to Avis and returned the car, then drove wearily home.

Matt didn’t make it home that morning, instead he arrived that night after work. I had prepared his favourite curry with under cooked chicken. I was as sweet as I could possibly when he claimed to be exhausted and needed an early night. Sure sweetheart, I said with all the sympathy I could muster. The sedative in his wine had clearly helped the situation, it was barely 7.30.

Once he was snoring, I retrieved his pistol from under my pillow where I had hidden it earlier. I carefully placed it in his hand, his finger on the trigger. I then gathered my packed belongings from the spare room and quietly shut the front door behind me.

My lifelong friend, Paul, was waiting for me in his Mercedes. Paul had always fancied me, and if I’m honest, I guess I fancied him right back. He showed me the plane tickets as we exited my street.

I then placed a call to the police.
