The Culture of the Ancient Norse People

Many people think of the Vikings as fierce warriors who raided foreign lands. In truth, the Vikings were a rather small group of Norsemen—people from Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Most Norsemen were farmers and herdsmen. They grew grains and vegetables and raised cattle, goats, sheep, and pigs. So while all Vikings were Norsemen, not all Norse people were Vikings.

The Norse included various tribes of people living throughout northern Europe between about 1000 BC and AD 1000. These groups were not connected and likely didn’t know one another. Even so, they did share certain traits. They smelted iron ore and made it into tools and cookware. They also had a rich tradition of preserving history through storytelling.
