About this ebook
Not every work of fiction is based on mere imagination, even if every work invariably employs imagination to certain extent. The stories and sub-stories in this book are based on true heroic acts, though the names have been changed. Nonetheless, you are bound to be reminded of the heroes you’ve read or heard about somewhere. This book is a tribute to our fallen heroes, and that's the reason it has been made available free of cost.

Always on duty
Sixty-two is not the age you like to be disturbed at five o’clock on a cold Venetian morning, especially to argue with your eighty-five year old dad when he is turning the house upside down for some ‘sane’ reason. But Maria needed to do that. She woke up unwillingly as she heard repeated noises from her dad’s bedroom, and tried to rub sleep from her eyes.
"Dad? Dad? What in the name of Jesus are you trying to do?" His room was down the stairs in their double-storey house by the banks of the canal that was now much cleaner than it had been a few days back, as human activities had been halted completely.
Daddy?
Maria stood at his door, tapping her foot on the floor, demanding but not expecting a genuine reason. She heard just one word. Hospital. Hospital? Was he suddenly ill? She couldn’t discount the possibility at that age but she hadn’t expected that to happen. No, not to her dad.
