Teenage Dick is the clever retelling of Shakespeare’s classic story about one famous man’s greedy path to power.
The rebirthed character of Richard III, the most famous disabled character of all time, is introduced in the deepest winter of his discontent: junior year of high school. Bullied for his disability, teenage Richard is driven to prove his worth and trump his classmates as the ultimate revenge. Chinese-American playwright Mike Lew presents the audience with a familiar cast of characters as Richard works through trials and tribulations along the path of becoming senior class president. Like all dictators, he is faced with the hardest question of all: is it better to be loved, or feared?
The play Teenage Dick was first performed by Ma-Yi Theater Company at the Public Theater, New York, in 2018, and received its UK premiere at the Donmar Warehouse, London, in December 2019, directed by Artistic Director Michael Longhurst. The play commissioned by The Apothetae, a company dedicated to plays that accurately illustrate the 'Disabled Experience'.
