    ACT I

    EXT. SUBURBS – NIGHT

    SUBTITLE: CHRISTMAS TIME.

    SAN DIEGO, CA. 2033.

A dimly lit, well-kept house, with an impeccable yard, sits among other homes that are perfectly decorated with Christmas lights and ornaments.

A truck with a sign on it: EVERGREEN LANDSCAPE, is parked in the driveway.

    A car drives by.

    INT. LIVING ROOM – NIGHT

SUBTITLE: CHRISTMAS TIME. SAN DIEGO, CA

NATHAN WRIGHT, late 30’s, sits at his desk with a laptop. He’s a little on the chubby side.

A light is on. Nathan is drinking bourbon neat and eating ice cream.

He is wearing his work shirt – EVERGREEN LANDSCAPE.

On his desk is a used copy of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by Betty Edwards.

Underneath the book is a sketchbook with a pencil to the side.

Nathan is reading emails. He closes one email, and then clicks on the next email, which is titled Love Lottery.

The email opens and Nathan begins to read.

    LOVE LOTTERY (1 OF 3)

Congratulations! You are one of the chosen few to win the Love Lottery. Once every four years, one thousand lucky entries are selected to design their perfect ROMAN, (robot/human.) No longer are you willing to let fate determine whom you fall in love with, or if you fall in love at all. You’ve decided to take destiny into your own hands and let our relationship experts hand craft your Mona Lisa. Your selection was fate, but now your fate is our selection.

In order for our team to turn your dream into a loving and living reality, we need to get to know you.

    LOVE LOTTERY (1 OF 3) (CONT’D)

Please tell us about yourself, and who you are looking for. Please be candid.

CLICK HERE to begin your application.

Nathan pauses for a moment. With a slight smirk, he clicks on the CLICK HERE tab.

    NATHAN

    Candid huh?

A new window on his laptop opens. A lone, blinking tab on a blank page stares back at Nathan.

Nathan puts the ice cream down and places his fingers on the keyboard.

    Typing and talking.

    NATHAN (CONT’D)

I’m the worst boyfriend ever. Or I was. Or I have been on certain occasions. Many occasions actually. It’s not like I haven’t been unlucky at love, it’s just that I’ve treated love, at times, with a certain lack of respect. Did I let one get away? Boy did I. More than one really. Did I realize how lucky I was at the time to be with HER? Not a clue. It was only after the fact, but after the fact is a lonely place. One that I know too well. I tell myself that I won’t make the same mistake again, but instead of not making that mistake, I make a different one, which puts me right back where I was before it all began. Don’t get me wrong, I have some amazing memories from the past, but that’s all those moments have become. I’m thank- ful for the women in my life that I’ve had the pleasure to know in every aspect imaginable. I have no idea what it’s like to be a wo- man who is looking for her knight in shining armor, only to discover that he’s just another dumbass. J.A.D.A. To all of those women, I sincerely apologize for being that guy.

Nathan pauses and stares at the wall. His eyes float about in his head as he is searching for his next thought.

    NATHAN (CONT’D)

It’s too bad that we, men, have to talk, because I sometimes think that if we would just shut up, then we would be way ahead of the game. And, we would save our- selves from a lot of self-inflicted pain that comes from the crap that involuntarily gushes out of our mouths. Shut up! Be cool! Nod and smile. You may not be the most interesting man in the world with that recipe, but at least it will keep you out of trouble. Or at least it should.

Nathan smiles and laughs. He takes a drink.

    NATHAN (CONT’D)

Yes, I am not the most interesting man in the world. Yes, I have made mistakes, which I still regret to this day. And yes, I have at times, been a J.A.D.A. But I’m here to chart a new course. I am here for more amazing memories and to share them with someone forever.

Nathan pauses. His fingers are still on the keyboard.

    NATHAN (CONT’D)

The future is now, and I’m ready.

Nathan sits back in his chair, crosses his arms and nods approvingly.

He then scrolls down to the bottom of the page to reveal the SUBMIT tab.

Nathan pauses and then takes in a breath.

    NATHAN (CONT’D)

    Here we go.

Nathan clicks on the tab. A pop up appears:

Thank you. Part One of your application has been received.

Nathan closes the laptop and finishes his drink.

He turns off the light, grabs the glass and bowl and walks away.

    EXT. SIDEWALK – DAY

Nathan is walking. His head is down in his phone. He looks up for a second and notices an open gas tank door on a parked car. Nathan walks over, closes the door and keeps walking.

    He approaches a crosswalk.

Nathan raises his head just enough to see that the light is red. Then he turns his
