Interview with cover page Photographer Lee Manston

Lee Manston is a portraiture photographer with over 7 years’ experience based in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire UK.

Although primarily a portrait photographer he is equally as happy to shoot most styles of photography from fashion, beauty, fantasy, family, alternative to gothic and collaborate with clothing designers, makeup artists and hairstylists on shoots at his studio in Cheshunt.

Read the short interview with Lee Manston which I took as we worked together on the book cover:

Alex: Lee, how and when did you first become interested in photography?

Lee:  I first become interested in photography about 7 years ago. I wanted a new hobby and years previously I had a basic camera and like many who have no real interest in photography (which was me at the time), I used the presets to take photos. I decided to start photography as my new hobby and learn how to fully use a camera manually so after weeks of research I went out and bought a decent camera body and lens and 1 lighting kit and I was hopeless to start with but thanks to experimenting, guides from YouTube and continued learning. I have developed (no pun intended) into the photographer I am today and even today I am as keen to learn new techniques as ever.

Alex: What do you like most about being a photographer?

Lee:  Before photography I was extremely shy, nervous around people I did not know and thanks to photography I have become much more confident and I have been told on dozens of occasions that my hospitality on shoots and how I am now makes the person I am shooting with extremely comfortable. One model stated I should write a book about working with models due to how I manage my shoots so I have photography to thank for that, taking an extremely nervous, shy person into a confident host and its meeting and working with people I now enjoy the most about photography and that would have been hard to believe 7 years ago.

Alex: Is there any artist/photographer who inspired your art?

Lee: There are not really any artists/photographers who inspire me. Until I started photography I did not really know of anyone else's work. There are many photographers now who I admire but I do not try and emulate or copy them. I have purchased some tuition videos in the past to learn new techniques but that is mostly down to what I wish to learn mostly and not down to one individual photographer

. Alex: What is your favorite subject to photograph?

Lee:  I love shooting portraits. Not your usual F8 sharp portraits but using a shallow depth of field and wide aperture, shooting through glass for reflections. This is my favorite style of shooting.

Alex: How would you describe your general style?

Lee: I consider myself a beauty, portrait and fashion photographer. I do not consider myself to have a general style as I love mixing the variety of styles I can shoot on any shoot. If someone was to look at my work and generalize a style I would probably say portraiture.

Alex: What is it about nude photography that interest you the most?

Lee: I do not really shoot much nude photography. I think it’s been over a year since I last shot a nude subject. I have no issues shooting nudes if the person I am working with wishes to do it but most wish to work with me for my fashion and portraiture work as I work with lots of models who are known for being art nude models, but they wish to work with me for something different for their portfolios which is a lovely compliment.

Alex: What is the most difficult part of being a photographer for you?

Lee: The most difficult part of being a photographer for me is it is not a cheap hobby. Luckily over the years I now have accumulated all the kit I need and I have very little overheads these days but currently I shoot more as a hobbyist so do not earn from it but shooting content/ideas that interests me.

Alex: What future plans do you have?

Lee: My future plans really depends on my day job. I have considered going full time as I know I can make a living
