CHAPTER 1
GOD’S TREATMENT FOR NEGATIVE EMOTIONS
For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man.
—EPHESIANS 3:14–16
HUMANS ARE SO much more than clumps of tissues and the results of their labor. We are not simply physical entities, as cod fish and fir trees are. We are physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual beings. Wholeness and balance at the mental and spiritual levels have been proved to affect the capacity of your body to heal physically. Additionally, as thinking, feeling products of the Creator, we have needs for mental and spiritual healing when balance has been overturned in those areas. What is required for this healing of mind and spirit? What are the ways to seek alignment in order to be healed? What is God’s prescription for inner healing?
God’s Word tells us that our minds need to be transformed and aligned through Christ in order for us to be the recipients of all the divine promises He has provided in our redemption (Rom. 12:1–2). It requires our full surrender to engage in this integration of the Godhead into all that we are: body, soul, and spirit. We must consecrate ourselves to Him, declaring, Not my will, but yours be done
(Luke 22:42, NIV). This denial of self presents us to God as a holy, pleasing, and available recipient of all He is. It makes available to us the life of continual healing—health and wholeness—spiritually as well as physically. He made us to be united to Him in harmony in order for our lives to run smoothly. His main purpose for creating mankind was to draw us into fellowship with Him.
When we speak of physical health and healing, we are referring to maintaining or reacquiring balance needed for health by adhering to guidelines that the body’s design dictates. Physically you align yourself with God’s purpose by accepting the stewardship of your temple in which He will dwell. When we speak of balance in hearts and minds, we may think of it as realignment—that is, to prosper, you must come back into conformity, into line, with the spiritual principles and precepts by which you were created.
This is the path toward healing. When that is accomplished, you may be restored to God’s design and His plan.
Spiritually we must have God’s Holy Spirit reigning in every part of our beings. As you yield your life to Him continually, He will guide you into all truth
(John 16:13). He will teach you to have the mind of Christ
(1 Cor. 2:16), showing you how to remain positive and hopeful and constantly rejoice with great feelings of thankfulness. And when you focus on eternal life rather than temporal existence, the Holy Spirit will show you how to be aligned with God and His purposes (2 Cor. 4:16–18). Inner healing is the healing of the mind and spirit. The body is also strengthened through the healing of your mind and spirit.
MIND AND BODY, BODY AND MIND
A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.
—PROVERBS 17:22
King Solomon shows us in this proverb that he understood the requirement for health and healing; it involves wholeness of body, mind, and spirit. Intuitively we are aware that we are not divided beings into brain, body, and spirit but that each one is connected, each is a part of a singularity in its influence on each other. Those influences are more profound than we may know, however. Science is just now teasing out the details of the depth of the relationships between our brain, body, and spirit. For example, research indicates that emotional pain excites the same parts of the brain as physical pain
