    CATHIA RESTED HER HEAD against the cool stones around her bedroom window. Today her father would see her married. Another alliance secured. She sighed and looked out the window, judging the distance between the sill and the ground. It was no use, and she was likely to break a bone or worse if she tried, and not even her pain would stop her father from carrying out the ceremony.

    She’d escaped twice before. Making it all the way to the shore. That had been the extent of her bravery. No one wanted to aid her or face their laird, and she wasn’t willing to have anyone harmed on her behalf. Her last attempt had seen her bolted in this room.

    It wasn’t that she resented marriage; she was the eighth daughter. Father had drummed into their heads that it was all their duty to have marriages that strengthened the alliance of Cole, their brother and future laird. A state four of her sisters currently did not enjoy. What she resented was the disregard for her feelings. She dreamed of a marriage with passion, emotion, but most of all love.

    She wanted something so foreign to the women in her family that she couldn’t begin to put her desires into words.

    Strength was one aspect. She understood and wasn’t naive to deny the advantages of strong alliances, but she didn’t crave brute strength alone.

    The door easing open gained her attention and she turned to see Fiona, her maid, entering with a basin of water and washcloths cradled
