About this ebook

The shifter is no more. Sir Edryd Mortain has destroyed the potion that unleashes the beast he has within. When Isabelle Grey learns that Mortain has returned from France with his betrothed, she accepts her friend John Havoc's proposal of marriage.

A chance, highly sensual, encounter brings Isabelle and Mortain together and a difficult choice is made. But when an unforeseen threat to Isabelle's life arises, Mortain must bring Bedwyr to life once more and in doing so, he risks losing his beloved forever.

Set in 1209 Wales, Revealed in the Mist is the final novella in a steamy trilogy about the noble Welsh knight, Sir Edryd Mortain and his alter ego, the depraved shifter Bedwyr, and their forbidden love for one girl.

Revealed in the Mist

Chapter One

Wales 1210

ANOTHER BODY had been discovered in Bedwyr Marsh. A young prostitute had been disemboweled. The details of her death were horrific. The villagers had dubbed the killer Drudwyn the Hound. Little was known about him though stories were rampant that he was a knight—possibly a lord or even a duke.

Isabelle Grey heard the stories with a sigh of gratitude that Sir Mortain and more significantly, Bedwyr, were well away from Pembrokeshire and thereby cleared of all suspicion.

Her eleven-year-old charge, Reginald Blackwell had been afflicted by night terrors ever since his grandfather abruptly vanished from Blackwell Keep. Sir Hugo had been bewitched by the Black Monk Eustace into doing is bidding. Believing he was serving the magician, Myrddin, he disappeared at the end of winter and had not been heard from since.

Naturally, she did not tell the magistrate about it when Sir Hugo’s daughters petitioned him to investigate. Isabelle hinted that the nobleman may have left for London on secret business related to the delivery he had received from the Brotherhood of the Black. Their spies were everywhere, she said gravely, and the magistrate seemed satisfied with the explanation.

But poor Reginald—his father was absent and now his grandfather had been taken from him. She would have liked to leave Pembrokeshire, There were too many memories of Mortain and Bedwyr to weigh on her spirit, but she could not leave the Blackwell children undefended. Thus far the killer had confined his activities to young women, but his tastes could change and children could become his prey. She had heard tales of such monsters.

Hugo’s eldest daughter, Anne, looked up from her tapestry. What are your plans for your day off, Isabelle?

I am meeting my friend, John Havoc, in the church yard, my lady. He says he enjoys reading the headstones. Do I have your permission, my lady?

I ought to object to the way you ramble about alone with that man. Take care there, dearest—though you are the very model of virtue. She waved a hand It is quite all right. You have been melancholic of late, Isabelle. I pray you take enjoyment in this day. We should hate to lose you.

Isabelle dressed with care for her outing with John Havoc, who preferred she call him Jack. In the months since Bedwyr left for France, the young nobleman had become an invaluable friend. He was untroubled by her strange history nor did he condemn her. She had never known so true a friend before, but there was something about John Havoc (as he was known) that troubled her. The reserve in his manner, his habit of not answering a question directly, and his reluctance to discuss his own life was concerning. Surely, after the confidences she had shared with him, he should feel comfortable enough to share some with her.

Isabelle determined she would to get answers out of him this afternoon.

She fixed the silk wimple over her hair and met her gray eyes in the mirror.

Bedwyr was in her thoughts again. She thought about him incessantly. Especially at night. He had taken her virginity and a girl does not forget a thing like that. She had been seduced by a lonely monster and the act had seared her body and soul. There was no escaping the brand.

However she wished otherwise, Bedwyr was an unscrupulous beast and it was likely she would never see him again. It was time to forget.
