The fall of MALACCA has caused great dejection among the Portuguese prisoners. They say openly Now that Malacca is lost, there’s no more India for us and it is true. …we shall be able to drive the PORTUGUESE out of India within a short time. The ENGLISH and the DANES must then dry up and your honourable Company will have full control of the rich trade.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND THE BOOK

Background of Rev. Fr. René Cardon

Reverend Father René Edouard Cardon (1877-1948) was born on 15th June 1877 in Neuilly-sur-Thelle, a commune in the Oise department in northern France. He was ordained as a Catholic priest on 24th June 1900. In the same year, at the age of 23, Fr. Cardon arrived in Malacca to serve under the parish of St Francis Xavier under the Society of the French Missions of Paris (Société des Missions étrangères de Paris). He also served as the parish priest for Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Taiping from 1919-1931.

During World War I (1914-1918), Fr. Cardon returned to France and served as a stretcher bearer and he won the Croix de Guerre (War Cross) medal.

After the Catholic News (then known as the Catholic Leader) was first published in 1935, Fr. Cardon succeeded Laurence Henderson as the paper’s editor. In 1938, Fr. Cardon wrote on ‘Catholicism in the east and the diocese of Malacca, 1511-1888’, which was published in the Catholic Leader. He managed the publication from 1935 issue to 1941 – the start of World War II in the country.

During his time in Malacca, Fr. Cardon became a distinguished scholar and an authority in Malayan history, particularly on the Portuguese period. He was the first of well-known Malacca Catholic priests renowned for their interest and contributions in local history. He was also known to have been fluent in the Chinese dialects.

In 1935, Fr. Cardon started the Malacca Museum from just a dedicated room in the Malacca Library. The Malacca Museum began with only a few reproductions of old maps, plans, photographs and portraits obtained by way of donations. In 1938, he was involved in an international conference of prehistorians held in Singapore.

During the early 1930s, he was a member of the then renowned Malacca Historical Society and in 1937, Fr. Cardon was elected the society’s vice-president.

Through his historical research, he became a regular contributor
