Abstract:

In this work, two possible methods for the acquisition of Phenyl-2-propanamine were studied. The Leuckart reaction, in which Fenylacetone was reduced, together with Formamide, to synthesize Amphetamine. As well as the Electrolytic reduction, in which Phenyl-2-nitropropene  was reduced in an oxidized aluminum amalgam to synthesize Amphetamine as a final product. Different factors including the speed of the reactions, the material consumption of the reactions, the purity of the product and the yields of the reactions were compared in the two methods. It was found that the electrolytic reduction had a yield of 70% and close to no impurities in it, compared to the 55% yield and 50% of the Leuckart reaction. But comparatively the Leuckart reaction was close to instantaneous and required a small amount of material during the reaction, compared to the Electrolytic reduction which required a large amount of aluminum and other material like Mercury to start the reaction and took over 2 hours to complete one batch of Amphetamine. In conclusion, the electrolytic reduction is preferable in a small scale production where only one batch of high purity amphetamine is required to produce, while the Leuckart reaction is a better choice for industrial production.
