About this ebook
COVID-19 has demonstrated clearly that businesses, nonprofits, individuals, and governments are terrible at dealing effectively with large-scale disasters that take the form of slow-moving train-wrecks. Using cutting-edge research in cognitive neuroscience and behavioral economics on dangerous judgement errors (cognitive biases), this book first explains why we respond so poorly to slow-moving, high-impact, and long-term crises. Next, the book shares research-based strategies for how organizations and individuals can adapt effectively to the new abnormal of the COVID-19 pandemic and similar disasters. Finally, it shows how to develop an effective strategic plan and make the best major decisions in the context of the uncertainty and ambiguity brought about by COVID-19 and other slow-moving large-scale catastrophes. Gleb Tsipursky combines research-based strategies with real-life stories from his business and nonprofit clients as they adapt to the pandemic. The "Resilience Series" is the result of an intensive, collaborative effort of our authors in response to the 2020 coronavirus epidemic. Each volume offers expert advice for developing the practical, emotional and spiritual skills that you can master to become more resilient in a time of crisis.

Book Foreword
Adapt and Plan for the New Abnormal of the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic
The world is in trouble – but, thanks to the wisdom in this book, you don’t have to be a victim and sit waiting for some government to help you. You can plan. You can adapt. The decisions you can make in the months to come can help you steer your family, your business, your community, onto a safer path, even while others are driving blindly. Gleb Tsipursky has done a masterful job of pulling together not only the essential tools and strategies for planning your way forward, he also offers a clear-eyed perspective on how our leaders failed to respond when the threat emerged.
Why do I put so much trust in Dr. Tsipursky?
Well, for one thing, he made the right calls on the trajectory of the pandemic long before it was widely recognized as a global crisis. For example, he wrote two articles in late February, in which he critiqued the CDC’s advice at that time – which was to plan for a two-week emergency in case of a local outbreak.
In The Columbus Dispatch he wrote: To prepare well for COVID-19, you need to make long-term changes to your life, not simply short-term plans, and accept that we’re in a new normal. Instead of a couple of weeks, you should have sufficient supplies for a couple of months in case of quarantines.
In Business Insider, he wrote: Forward-looking companies are already encouraging their workers to work remotely as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Follow their lead.
Both news outlets waited till March 11 th to publish these articles – perhaps because their editorial departments themselves were cautious about publishing advice so different from what the CDC and other leaders were saying at the time. Indeed, the Editorial Page Editor of The Columbus Dispatch later wrote to Dr. Tsipursky in a private e-mail on March 15: my concern initially was that the column might be a bit too much; now I agree you were very much ahead of the curve and on target.
March 7 th the President tweeted: So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!
And indeed, many people continued to refer to the gathering epidemic as just the flu.
It was the same with business leaders. Elon Musk tweeted on March 6 that: The coronavirus panic is dumb,
and on March 19 that: Based on current trends, probably close to zero new cases in US too by end of April.
Indeed, as late as mid-March very few were predicting the US was on the same trajectory as Italy. As a result of underestimating the threat, we wasted precious weeks while the epidemic spread like wildfire. Looking back, one wonders, how could we have been so blind?
Dr. Tsipursky has no crystal ball; as a behavioral economist and cognitive neuroscientist, his expertise is in recognizing the blindspots in our nature – cognitive biases – that lead us to misperceive reality and make disastrous errors in our decision-making. These errors are costing lives and ruining livelihoods. Please make use of the practical advice he shares in this concise and practical guide. They will help keep you safe, and enable you to plan for your future in the new abnormal.

Series Foreword
Resilience In a Time of Crisis
What can we do to help?
In a time of crisis – such as the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic – we all have a natural impulse to help our neighbors. John Hunt, founder of John Hunt Publishing, asked this question of our company, and then offered a suggestion. He proposed producing a series of short books written by experts offering practical, emotional, and spiritual skills to help people survive in the midst of a crisis.
To reach people when they need it most, John wanted to accomplish this in forty days. Bear in mind, the normal process of bringing a book from concept to market takes at least eighteen months. As publisher of
