The Adventures of Pipsqueak and Bob - Raymond G Newsome

    Adventures of Pipsqueak and Bob

    The Horse-Riding Vampire

Pipsqueak and Bob were the perfect partners in crime. At ten years old, they were always prepared for an adventure. They believed they could solve anything together. One night, the boys found out that not everything needed an answer.

They could not forget how the mystery began. It was a midsummer evening. Twilight had come upon them. The boys ventured into the dark. They were looking for a ghost and believed they had heard one in the hollow.

Bob was the oldest by seven months and stood an inch taller. He had brown hair and blue eyes wearing his favorite basketball shorts and T-Rex t-shirt. Pipsqueak was brown haired and brown eyed. He crept forward in red shorts and a white tank top. Both wore their bravery for everyone to see.

They had no doubt they were on to something, so Pipsqueak and Bob kept looking. They listened with care. The trees echoed the noise from the moaning specter. The ghost could have been anywhere. The boys walked on through the growing shadows. The darkness did not scare them when they were together. They believed nothing did. This was their ghost to find and not for anyone else.

They kept moving toward a cave. All the noise flowed from the opening compared to the unusual quiet of the nearby area. Pipsqueak and Bob stopped long enough to turn on their flashlights. Without any more hesitation, they stepped into the abyss.

The first obstacle they found in their path was a maze of stalagmites and stalactites! The dangerous course weaved through the rocks but the boys marched forward fearlessly. They knew how to find their way since this was not the first time being in this particular cave.

Pipsqueak and Bob were almost through the maze when they heard a booming clop. They looked all around them with their flashlights. What was that? That’s when the boys shrugged and walked through the end of their first obstacle only to find the second.

The boys were quite lucky since they were close to the edge of a cliff. Pipsqueak had to stop Bob before he walked off into the giant pool of water far below them. Bob wiped the sweat from his forehead. Thanks, Pipsqueak.

You’re welcome, Bob. Let’s find a way across.

    Good plan. Lead the way.

Together they found a rope bridge leading to the other side of the water and started across the chasm. Clop. The boys froze.

    Clop. Clop. Clop.

The sound thundered through the cave. It shook the ground and the bridge. The boys held on tight as the ropes began to sway and sway and sway! What on earth could cause this much ruckus? The bridge finally slowed as the boys finished crossing on shaky legs.

They were not alone. There was no denying it. Something else, something other than a ghost, was in the cave. It was getting closer. That did not stop the boys though. They marched ahead with curiosity and excitement in their hearts.

Bob pulled out a plastic baseball bat from his backpack. He glanced at Pipsqueak. Did you bring yours?

Pipsqueak nodded. He removed his bat from his bag. It’s right here.

    Are you ready?

    Let’s go, Bob!

Pipsqueak tiptoed down the path with Bob right behind him. Bob watched for sneak attacks with his bat held high. The boys reached a corner when it happened.

The clops came faster in their direction!

    Ahhh! The boys yelped.

The rider pulled the horse to a stop in front of them. His red eyes glowed in the dark. Flashlights shined on his face. He blocked the light with his arm. A grimace revealed big, sharp teeth.

Ahhh! It’s a vampire! The boys ran away.

The horse gave chase through the narrow tunnel. The path was too small for it to run fast, so Pipsqueak and Bob gained a head start. They raced back to the bridge. It vibrated with the thunderous sound from the horse’s hooves. Each step was a struggle as the planks bound by rope shook, but the boys managed.

    Go, Pipsqueak, go! Bob shouted.

Come on! We can make it, Bob.

They made it to the other side on wobbly legs and stumbled for the cave entrance. Bob hoped they made it to safety when the horse released a wicked sound.

He turned to see it standing next to the large hole. The animal reared and pawed the air. Its rider held tight to the reigns.  As quick as a flash, the vampire swung the horse and galloped to the beginning of the path. He whipped around then charged the canyon.

Pipsqueak, you have to see this.

    What?

Pipsqueak turned back as the horse leaped into the air. Both boys stared at the spectacle out of fear and fascination. Bob jumped as it landed on their side of the bridge.

    Uh oh, run Pipsqueak run!

Bob ran passed his partner taking the lead. He rushed into the open and down the path. Pipsqueak was right behind him.

The boys charged through the trees with full abandon. Bob tripped over a log skidding through the leaves. Pipsqueak, help me!

Pipsqueak rushed back. He grabbed Bob’s arm and pulled him up. The two scurried toward the house as the horse galloped in their direction. I don’t know if this was a good idea, Bob.

It’s fine. We can make it.

Pipsqueak followed Bob up the cobblestone path. If they made it in the house, nothing could hurt them. Once they made it across the threshold, it couldn’t
