About this ebook

Here is a short, sharp, free introduction to Penny Tickham, ahead of her first full-length outing, '110 Degrees East'.
In her errant student days, Penny comes across a German student fraternity practising the old, brutal tradition of Mensur: a ritualised sabre duel. The leader of the group is a charismatic, menacing figure; his girlfriend a glowing, golden woman with a scent of fresh hay and buttermilk. Why choose, she reasons, when you can have both?

    The Baden-Württemberg Tournament

Penny Tickham was already in Germany, wandering in the warm south-western region of Baden-Württemburg, when a letter found her from the man whom her mother insisted on calling her ‘Uncle’ Robert. Wherever she went, he knew where to find her. It was not as though she had been having any trouble entertaining herself in the cities and resorts of Europe, tasting the wines and cuisines of every region; climbing, swimming, skiing; educating herself in the erotic desires and habits of locals and tourists and passing on what she had learned to others; but invariably just when she was feeling restless or all fucked out, just when she was ready to leave town, or felt she must lest she risk keeping a lover too long, a letter would arrive from London pricking her onwards. An invitation to dine in Paris, a ski pass, a ticket to La Scala. And this time: "Tickham. I have entered you to fight foil in the open tournament at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, Freiburg im Breisgau." And the name and address of a hostel in the city. It was just like Sir Robert to stress richness of experience and spare no cost there, but to expect her to suffer basic accommodation, in amongst the volk.

Well, Penny was always attracted to universities. Perhaps she wanted to absorb some of the experience she had missed by choosing an erratic, wandering path for her higher education. Never mind lectures in solemn, panelled theatres – she was there for the swirling hormones, the careless, carefree mobs of spanking-new adult bodies, the freshness and playfulness of thought and deed. Besides, she had not fenced for some months; clearly ‘Uncle’ Robert felt she should keep her hand in. So she left her planned walking trip in the black forest, left her companions in their tight shorts and pink würst limbs, and caught a train to Freiburg.
